Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sam goes to town with his friend. To start with he has 50 pounds, he spends half of the money on a new skateboard and then gives five pounds and fifty pence to his friend. How much money does he have left?

Answer: 19 pounds and 50 pence

Half of the money is 25 pounds. Then you need to add on 5 pounds and 50 pence to get the total amount of money Sam used, which is 30 pounds and 50 pence. Next you need to take 30 pounds and 50 pence away from 50 pounds, which equals 19 pounds and 50 pence.
2. Molly takes the bus to London from Horsham at 9.00am. When she gets to London the time is 10.15am. How many minutes did the bus journey take?

Answer: 75 minutes

The bus journey takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. There are 60 minutes in an hour. 60 plus 15 equals 75, so the answer is 75 minutes.
3. Lily needs to buy 22 bags of sugar from the shop. She can hold 4 bags of sugar at one time. What is the minimum amount of trips that Lily will need to make to the shop to buy all the sugar she needs?

Answer: 6

If you put 5, don't forget Lily needs to make one more trip for the remaining 2 bags. Five trips will only enable her to bring 20 bags of sugar home.
4. There are 50 new books in the classroom cupboard. 20 children in the class need new books. Which fraction of the books will need to be used?

Answer: 2/5

20 books out of the 50 need to be used, which is 20/50. The zeros cancel, giving 2/5.
5. In England there is a population of around fifty million people. How is this written using figures instead of words?

Answer: 50,000,000

Fifty million is the same are fifty thousand thousand, so you need to put 50 with 3 zeros to make it fifty thousand, which looks like this: 50,000. Next you need to add on a another three zeros to make it fifty thousand thousand, or fifty million, which looks like this: 50,000,000. Big numbers like this can be written with or without the commas between the zeros.
6. The builders can build a building which is 50 metres high in one week. They need to build a building which is 500 metres high. How many days will this take them?

Answer: 70

First of all you need to divide 500 by 50, to find out how many weeks it takes. The answer is 10. This is the bit where you might have been caught out. You need to convert the weeks to days, by multiplying 10 by 7 (the number of days in a week). The answer is 70 days.
7. Bob is thinking of a number. The number is higher than 9 but lower than 13. The number is prime. Which number is he thinking of?

Answer: 11

The number is 11, because a prime number is a whole number with only 2 factors, itself and 1.
8. There are six horses in a race. Two of the horses are brown and the rest are white. What is the probability of a white horse winning the race? (Remember to simplify the fraction.)

Answer: 2/3

There is a 4/6 chance of a white horse winning, but that needs to be simplified. You need to simplify the fraction by dividing both the top and bottom numbers by 2, which equals 2/3.
9. Sophie wants to wallpaper her bedroom wall. Her wall is 2 metres tall and 5 metres wide. These lengths multiplied together equal the area of the wall and the unit of measurement for this is metres squared. How many 2 metre squared wallpaper rolls will Sophie need to buy to cover the wall?

Answer: 5

The area of the wall is 2 X 5 which equals 10. Now the area of the wall needs to be divided by the area of the wall paper roll, so 10 divided by 2 equals 5 rolls of wallpaper.
10. A show costs 2 pounds for children to watch and 3 pounds for adults. A family of 2 children and 2 adults pay to watch the show. How much change are they given out of 15 pounds?

Answer: 5 pounds

The cost for the children altogether is four pounds. The cost for the adults altogether is six pounds. 4 pounds added to six pounds equals 10 pounds. The difference between 10 pounds and 15 pounds is 5 pounds, so the change given is 5 pounds.
