Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Percy defeated his first monster while in a museum (I always knew those places were creepy). Their kind is referred to as "The kindly ones" as people are too afraid of them. Who was she?

Answer: A fury

She was one of the three furies. She went by the name Mrs. Dodds and was the math teacher of Percy's school. She also escorted Nico and Bianca out of the Lotus Casino while pretending to be a lawyer.
2. The second monster to be slain by Percy was also defeated in the ancient times by Theseus. Who was it?

Answer: The Minotaur

The Minotaur was killed when Percy stabbed it with its own broken horn in "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief". He was again defeated by Percy in "Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian".
3. Sweet Aunty Em wasn't so sweet after all; well, she did say that Percy would make a very handsome stone statue, but hey, who wants that? Who was she actually?

Answer: Medusa

In the ancient times, Medusa was killed by Perseus, the son of Zeus. In "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief", she fell prey to Percy, the son of Poseidon. As a joke, Percy cut off her head and sent it as a gift to the Gods.
4. The Echidna was the first monster Percy failed to kill. Who defeated her finally?

Answer: None of them

Echidna was the mother of all monsters. In the first (and thankfully, last!) encounter between her and Percy in "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief", he was almost killed by the Chimera she brought alongside her, but he saved himself by diving in the water. She does not reappear in the series.
5. Ever met a bad elder brother? This Cyclops takes the cake in both that department and stupidity: he thought Grover was a lady Cyclops and wanted to marry him! Who was it?

Answer: Polyphemus

Polyphemus was the worst of all Cyclopes according to Annabeth. He was defeated by Odysseys/Ulysses in the ancient times. Percy fought him in "Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters" and defeated him with the help of his Cyclops half-brother, Tyson.
6. I hate teachers, but I am thankful that none of them were like Dr. Thorn, who was actually a ___ in disguise. What was he?

Answer: Manticore

Dr. Thorn was on the mission to capture Nico and Bianca, the children of Hades in the book "Percy Jackson and the Titan's Curse". He was injured by the Hunters of Artemis and fled while kidnapping Annabeth.
7. You like cheerleaders? You won't after you meet Kelli and her gang of Cheerleaders in Goode High, as they are actually ___ in disguise.

Answer: Empousai

Kelli claims that the vampires are a legend based on the Empousai. They are very difficult to kill for any male hero, as their faces continuously shift to become more and more beautiful. They feed on blood.
8. Mrs O'Leary is the only friendly one we have seen. What is she?

Answer: Hellhound

In "Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief", a hellhound was summoned by Luke to kill Percy. They appear many times later in minor roles. Most of them are a lot smaller than Mrs O'Leary.
9. Another son of Poseidon, this monster battled Percy in "Percy Jackson and the Battle of the Labyrinth" and claimed to be his favourite son (as if that is possible!). Who is it?

Answer: Antaeus

Antaeus was also the son of Gaia/Gaea, Mother Earth, and hence was invulnerable as long as he remained in contact with the ground. He was defeated when Percy tricked him, managed to tie him up in mid-air and drove Riptide through him.
10. The strongest monster ever (shivers!), this one kept the Olympians busy for almost the whole length of "Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian". Who was it?

Answer: Typhon

Typhon was the husband of Echidna, father of all monsters. His head shifted constantly to become another monster, each one more fearsome than the next. He was finally defeated when Poseidon arrived to help the Gods with his army of Cyclopes.
