"Order of the Phoenix" - Film vs. Book Quiz

What takes pages in the book takes mere seconds in the film as the Dursleys bundle Dudley into the car after the dementor attack in Little Whingeing turns him into a blubbering wreck. Harry is left locked in his room and the advance guard comprising of Mad-Eye Moody, Lupin, Tonks, Shacklebolt and a couple of others turn up to whisk him away to the headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix.
Dumbledore uses his "put-outer" to extinguish the street lamps in Privet Drive in the first book and Mad-Eye uses this again in the book of "Order of the Phoenix" in Grimmauld Place.

The building shoves its way through with none of the occupants on either side noticing. This is Sirius Black's house and as he's still a wanted man, the only useful thing he can think of to do is offer his home as headquarters.
The telephone box option is how to get into the Ministry of Magic via the visitor's entrance. In case you ever wondered, 62442 spells out "magic" on the telephone keypad.
You get into Diagon Alley by tapping a specific brick in the wall behind the Leaky Cauldron pub.

Sirius and various other relations have had their pictures blasted off the family tree for being "blood-traitors" and not following in the path of the noble Black ancestry.
In the book, the portrait of Sirius's mother is in the hallway covered with a sheet as she continually screams abuse at the non pure-blood and blood-traitor wizards invading her home i.e. everyone in the Order.
Harry etc. come across the locket whilst cleaning out one of the rooms and no-one can open it - I don't want to spoil anything here if you haven't read the "Half-Blood Prince" yet but it is probably more significant than it seems!
We don't see much of Kreacher, the bitter old house-elf but we definitely don't see his dirty den in the film. We do see the troll's leg umbrella stand briefly though.

Answer: What are you talking about, there wasn't a Quidditch match or a ban!

There is no Quidditch in the film at all! In the book, Ron is now the Keeper and Ginny has to take over as Seeker when Harry is banned from playing. Dolores Umbridge is trying to impose the will of the Ministry of Magic over Hogwarts and consequently, all teams, organisations and clubs are disbanded and basically no-one can do anything fun at all! The Ministry approved Defence Against the Dark Arts course means that all the students do is learn the theory and never get to practise any spells. Hermione comes up with the idea of asking Harry to teach a group of like-minded people defensive spells and so the "DA" or "Dumbledore's Army" is formed.

Answer: Dobby the house elf tells him about it.

In the book, it's Dobby, who does not appear in the film, who explains what Harry needs to do to get the room to open for him. It is also known as the "Come and Go Room" and has been mentioned in the books before - Dumbledore said he needed the bathroom in the middle of the night and walked into the room and it was full of chamberpots. Fred and George have indeed hidden from Filch in it and Professor Trelawny hides her sherry bottles there.

It hides a more sinister secret in the "Half-Blood Prince" but again, I don't want to ruin it! The DA learn useful disarming and stunning spells in here and Harry has his first kiss! Unfortunately, Umbridge knows something is going on and in the film she manages to break in to the room with Filch and her Inquisitorial Squad which includes Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle.

In the book, Cho's friend Marietta Edgecombe told Umbridge about the secret society and as she had written her name down on a piece of jinxed paper, the word "SNEAK" forms in large spots across her face. In the film, it looks like Cho turns them in, although Malfoy says he'd caught her coming out of somewhere else so it doesn't seem as though she actually betrayed them by going to Umbridge on purpose.

This handily ends the budding romance between Cho and Harry as it went on a bit longer in the book.

In OOTP (book), Grawp is nowhere near as cute and cuddly as in the film, that's where Hagrid gets all his cuts and bruises from. In fact, Ron doesn't even see him as he's playing a Quidditch match when Hagrid asks Harry and Hermione to visit the forest with him. It's only near the end of "Half-Blood Prince" that we see Hagrid's attempts at civilising him are starting to pay off.
This was a funny little moment in the film, though, with Hermione and Grawp ringing their little bells at each other.

Ooopsie-daisy Lucius! The Dark Lord won't be very pleased with you! The prophecy is what Voldemort is after for the whole film as he wants to know what it says concerning himself and Harry. Harry hears it in the prophecy room but in the book, Dumbledore recounts it after the events in the ministry as it was Professor Trelawny who made the prophecy to him that out of Voldemort and Harry, "neither can live while the other survives" i.e. one of them has to kill the other in the end.
Helena Bonham-Carter plays Bellatrix, the escaped Death Eater, and she was exactly as I had imagined her!

In the book, it is Mad-Eye Moody who shows Harry the photo of the original Order which included his parents. Harry finds this rather macabre as most of the people it shows are either dead or insane, like Neville's parents. We don't see Sirius give Harry the mirror that can help two people communicate in the film, so whether it will play a part in the last "Deathly Hallows" book is anyone's guess.

I thought this was very well played out in the film with flashes of Voldemort in Harry's head and Harry writhing about on the floor. Luckily, Harry uses thoughts of love and friendship to oust Voldemort from his body and he then vanishes, but not before Cornelius Fudge arrives at the ministry and finally says "He's back!".
Even though this was an adaptation of the longest book in the "Harry Potter" series, it was the shortest film so far (imdb.com). Personally, it wasn't my favourite film of the five (not enough Fred and George!) but it was a must-see for Potter fans.
