Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was Dorothy heading in the beginning of the story?

Answer: Australia

Uncle Henry had been weak for some time, so he and Dorothy decided to take a trip to Australia. While there, it was hoped Dorothy would take care of him and he could get some rest. On the way, the ship they traveled on got caught in a huge storm and Dorothy was washed away, only to wake up in a foreign land.
2. What did Dorothy find growing from trees in the Land of Ev?

Answer: Lunches and dinners

Instead of fruit, Dorothy discovered pails filled with different food. Some were lunches, others were dinner. Inside, there was a wide variety for her to choose, and it helped as she traveled through the Land of Ev. The Wheelers claimed the pails to be their own, and claimed they had the right to kill Dorothy for taking one lunch and one dinner.
3. What did Tik-Tok need constant winding for?

Answer: Thinking, speaking, action

Dorothy escaped the Wheelers and found a copper creation. His name was Tik-Tok; he had been built by Smith & Tinkers, and was guaranteed to work for a thousand years. However, he needed constant winding in order to function. Tik-Tok had different points on his body where a key fit. One point was for thinking, another was for speaking, and the other was for action.

He was a formidable fighter and was a defender of Dorothy.
4. What was the secret of the Wheelers?

Answer: They couldn't really harm anyone

Tik-Tok explained to Dorothy that the Wheelers weren't anything to be afraid of. They were the ones who wrote 'BEWARE THE WHEELERS" in the sand upon Ev's shore, but it was only to make themselves seem frightening. Tik-Tok stated that the Wheelers were born with wheels and couldn't really hurt you because they only had wheels. He easily handled them when they tried to frighten Dorothy.
5. Why did Princess Langwidere lock Dorothy away?

Answer: She wanted her head

Princess Langwidere was a lazy woman in charge of the Land of Ev, being the niece of the deceased former King Ev. She entertained herself by changing heads, of which she had many. Dorothy visited her palace and the Princess looked at her closely. Princess Langwidere determined Dorothy was pretty-not gorgeous-enough for her collection.

When Dorothy refused to exchange her own head for Langwidere's least favorite head, she was punished and banished to a room in the palace.
6. What color were the people of Ev transformed into?

Answer: Purple

The Nome King decided to make all eleven of his prisoners into purple, the color of royalty, since they were all princes and princesses, along with the queen. Each became a different figurine, but all were purple. The people of Oz became green and the Scarecrow became gold.
7. Who was the first family member of Ev saved?

Answer: Evring

All members of the royal family of Eve were turned into ornaments in the Nome King's underground palace. He allowed everyone in Ozma's party to guess eleven (some twelve) times in his treasure room. He had many ornaments and figurines and it was nearly impossible to guess who was what.

It was Dorothy who finally guessed right during the Nome King's game. She touched a purple kitten and said "Ev" and the kitten became young Evring, who didn't remember being turned into the kitten figurine.
8. What did the Tin Woodsman get transformed into?

Answer: A whistle

The Nome King kept repeating that he found the transformation of the Tin Woodsman humorous. But nobody could figure out what it was exactly what it was. They never found him, even after rescuing all of the Ev family and all twenty-seven soldiers of Oz.

However, little Evring had taken a tin whistle from the rooms. It was in the shape of a pig and was green. Billina touched it and said "Ev" and the whistle became the Tin Woodsman.
9. What was the source of the Nome King's power?

Answer: A belt

Billina overheard the Nome King mention his magical belt. So she urged Dorothy to take it from him when she had the chance. After that, he attempted to turn them all into scorpions because he was furious they had changed the royal family back into their human selves. But he had no magical belt; Dorothy did. She later gave the belt to Ozma for her own use.
10. Why did Dorothy return home?

Answer: Her uncle was sick

In her palace, Ozma owned a painting that allowed her to see anyone in the world. Dorothy requested to see her Uncle Henry. She was distraught to see him still sick in Australia. Despite spending weeks enjoying Oz and being named an official Princess, Dorothy felt she must return, so she gave the Nome King's belt to Ozma and was sent to Australia with the promise that she could return to Oz whenever she wanted.
