Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following Death Eaters was reponsible for murdering Gideon and Fabian Prewett plus was one of Voldemort's first Death Eaters?

Answer: Antonin Dolohov

Antonin Dolohov was responsible for murdering the Prewett brothers along with four others. We learn in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" that he was present at the Hog's Head in 1956 when Voldemort was refused by Albus Dumbledore to teach Defence against the Dark Arts. Dolohov was a participant of the battle in the Department of Mysteries in which Lord Voldemort had tasked his Death Eaters to recover the lost prophecy from Harry Potter. Dolohov also killed Remus Lupin by using the Killing Curse Avada Kedavra in the Battle of Hogwarts.

His final fate is that he was defeated by professor Flitwick and after Voldemort's death is presumed either dead or imprisoned at Azkaban in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows". The other three people mentioned were also Death Eaters but much younger than Antonin Dolohov.
2. "I was one of the people who tortured Neville's parents into insanity and played a crucial part in ensuring that Harry Potter won the Triwizard Tournament in arry Potter and the Goblet of Fire'." Who am I?

Answer: Barty Crouch Jr

Barty Crouch Jr was the son of Barty Crouch Sr who was head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement in the Ministry of Magic.
Barty Crouch Jr along with Bellatrix Lestrange and her brother-in-law Rabastan Lestrange tortured Neville's parents Frank and Alice Longbottom into insanity using the Cruciatus Curse.
In the fourth novel, named "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", Barty Crouch Jr disguised himself as the Auror Alastor Moody using Polyjuice Potion and became Defence against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts in Harry's fourth year.
He was the one who put Harry's name in the magical Goblet of Fire and bewitched Hagrid in leading Harry on to the dragons, which was the first task. For the second task, through Cedric Diggory, he guided Harry as to the clue of how to solve the riddle of the closed egg. As for the third and final task he bewitched the Triwizard Cup into a Portkey and used magic on the other competitors thus ensuring that Harry would get to the Cup first which is exactly what happened.
However, Harry survived Voldemort's duel in the Little Hangleton graveyard after Voldemort's rebirth so Barty was partially successful in that he had ensured that Voldemort would rise again by using Harry's blood. Barty's final fate was to be subjected to the Dementor's Kiss which is thought of as being worse than death, as the Dementors suck out a person's soul.
The Death Eater Evan Rosier was killed by Aurors near the end of the First Wizarding War while resisting arrest.
Avery Jr participated in both Wizarding Wars and avoided Azkaban after the end of the first Wizarding War by claiming to be under the influence of the Imperius Curse. We get to know about the Death Eater Avery Jr after Voldemort's rebirth towards the end of "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".
3. This Death Eater helped in the torture of Muggles and opposers of Voldemort but after the end of the First Wizarding War he turned sides and helped put many of his fellow Death Eaters in the wizard prison of Azkaban. Who is this person which later on became headmaster of the Durmstrang Institute?

Answer: Igor Karkaroff

During the First Wizard War, Igor Karkaroff, along with Antonin Dolohov, was reported to have tortured the non-magical people known as Muggles and also opposers of Voldemort within the wizarding world.
After Voldermort's first defeat Mr Karkaroff was captured by the Auror Alastor Moody and some time later Karkaroff arranged for his release by giving up the names of his fellow Death Eaters of which the most important one was Barty Crouch Jr, who was the son of Barty crouch Sr himself, the head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement in the Ministry of Magic.

Later on in his life Karkaroff became the headmaster of Durmstrang Institute and in the fourth Harry Potter book, named "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", showed up as the headmaster of said institute and also was one of the judges for the Triwizard Tournament. When Voldemort rose again, Karkaroff went into hiding from Voldemort and his former Death Eater colleagues. We find out that in Harry's sixth year Mr Karkaroff has been murdered by the Death Eaters in "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".
Wilkes was killed during the First Wizarding War while Avery Sr's fate is uncertain in the Harry Potter series. Mr Lucius Malfoy avoided Azkaban at the end of the First Wizarding War claiming to be acting under the influence of the Imperius Curse.
4. "I betrayed my best childhood friends James and Lily Potter to Lord Voldemort and was also responsible for the murder of Cedric Diggory." Who Am I?

Answer: Peter Pettigrew

Peter Pettigrew was one of the best friends of Lily and James Potter at Hogwarts in the Gryffindor House. He was known as Wormtail and Lord Voldemort called him by this name only.
At the height of the First Wizarding War, as he was not as brave as the Potters, he began secretly working for Lord Voldemort and betrayed the Potters secret hiding place to the Dark Lord as he was made the Potter's secret keeper instead of Sirius Black. Ironically, the Dark Lord had his downfall at Godric's Hollow where Harry's parents were hiding.

During the time of the rebirth of Lord Voldemort in the fourth book, i.e "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", Wormtail was responsible for casting the Killing Curse which killed Hufflepuff student Cedric Diggory.
Wormtail sacrificed his hand for the rebirth of Voldemort for which he was rewarded with a silver hand.
Wormtail's final fate was that he was killed by this same silver hand when he temporarily showed mercy to Harry, when Harry was captured in the Malfoys' manor in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" (seventh book). The act of mercy was present as Harry had saved Peter's life in "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban".
Fenrir Greyback was a werewolf and thus not classified as a Death Eater but was responsible for killing Lavender Brown at the Battle of Hogwarts, plus he turned Remus Lupin into a werewolf when the latter was a child.
Narcissa Malfoy was the mother of Draco Malfoy and not a Death Eater herself though she was sympathetic to them.
Sirius Black had been framed by Peter Pettigrew for betraying the Potters, murdering 12 Muggles and for Pettigrew's murder as well and had unfairly spent 12 years in Azkaban for these crimes he was innocent of.
5. "I am indirectly responsible for the second opening of the Chamber of Secrets, I was the leader of the raid in the Department of Mysteries to recover the prophecy concerning my master Lord Voldemort, but after screwing this operation up I fell out of favor with the Dark Lord." Who am I?

Answer: Lucius Malfoy

Lucius Malfoy comes from a highly regarded pure blood wizarding family. After the First Wizarding War Mr Malfoy avoided Azkaban by claiming that he was acting under the influence of the Imperius Curse.
In Harry Potter's second year at Hogwarts, Lucius secretly slipped Voldemort's enchanted diary into Ginny Weasley's book supplies when he met the Weasleys at Diagon Alley. The aim was to discredit Arthur Weasley, whom he deeply despised, and remove Dumbledore from Hogwarts in addition to getting rid of Muggleborn wizards at Hogwarts. However, ultimately Lucius's nefarious plans failed when Harry Potter destroyed Voldemort's diary.
Three years later in book five, i.e " Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", Lucius Malfoy was tasked with recovering the prophecy concerning the Dark Lord and Harry Potter but ultimately this ploy failed as well when the prophecy gets destroyed and Voldemort is indeed revealed to be operating again.
For messing up this operation Lucius Malfoy would fall from grace in the eyes of the Dark Lord and his final fate is that in the final Battle of Hogwarts he was more interested in the fate of his son Draco Malfoy than for Voldemort's cause. He would go on to defect to Harry's side after Voldemort's final defeat.
Rubeus Hagrid was falsely implicated for the first opening of the Chamber of Secrets due to which he was expelled in his third year while Gibbon was killed by fellow Death Eater Thorfinn Rowle accidentally at the Battle of the Astronomy Tower towards the end of book six, i.e "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince".
6. "I was chiefly responsible for torturing Frank and Alice Longbottom into insanity using the Cruciatus Curse at the end of the First Wizarding War and many years later during the Second Wizarding War I also killed Sirius Black." Who am I?

Answer: Bellatrix Lestrange

Bellatrix Lestrange, along with Antonin Dolohov, was among the most powerful of the Death Eaters. She started following Voldemort during the First Wizarding War and after Voldemort's downfall, tortured Alice and Frank Longbottom, who were Aurors and Neville's parents, into insanity using the Cruciatus Curse. Her husband Rodolphus lestrange, brother-in-law Rabastan and Barty Crouch Jr helped her in the torture.
After Voldemort's rebirth, she escaped from Azkaban and towards the end of "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" she killed her cousin Sirius Black at the Battle at the Department of Mysteries.
Bellatrix Lestrange at the end was killed by Molly Weasley towards the end of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" at the Battle of Hogwarts. Bellatrix was also responsible for torturing Hermione Granger at Malfoy Manor and killing Dobby the House Elf by flinging a knife at him when Dobby tried to Apparate away.
Crabbe Sr's son was Vincent Crabbe, who was in Harry's year but in Slytherin House, while Jugson the Death Eater became known during the Second Wizarding War.
7. Who was the person responsible for relaying only half of the prophecy regarding Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter, but after feeling remorse for Lily Potter's death became a double agent for Dumbledore?

Answer: Severus Snape

Severus Snape was a Slytherin student around James Potter's time and was a half-blood wizard. His main role in the First Wizarding War was to eavesdrop on the prophecy being narrated by the future Divination teacher Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore about the boy who would vanquish the Dark Lord. He only heard half of the prophecy before being thrown out of Hog's Head Inn and conveyed its contents to Lord Voldemort who immediately set out to murder the Potters.

Severus secretly had feelings for Lily Potter and his grief after her death prompted Snape to secretly change sides and become a double agent for Dumbledore for many years to come. Snape went on to become the Potions master at Hogwarts after the end of the First Wizarding War; thus replacing his former teacher Horace Slughorn.
Severus Snape was very loyal to Albus Dumbledore in that he even went as far as to murder Albus Dumbledore at Dumbledore's own request.
At the Battle of Hogwarts, Snape was killed by Voldemort using the snake Nagini in the mistaken belief that Snape was the master of the Elder Wand.
The Death Eater Travers was responsible for the murder of the McKinnon wizard family during the First Wizarding War, while Albert Runcorn, while not a Death Eater himself, was responsible for investigating Muggleborn wizards when the Ministry of Magic came under Voldemort's control.
8. Who was responsible for trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone in order to bring Voldemort back again and also attempted to end Harry's life in "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone"?

Answer: Quirinus Quirrell

Quirinus Quirrell was loyal to Voldemort, though he wasn't a Death Eater, but his actions were no less than that of other Death Eaters.
During Harry's first year at Hogwarts, Quirrell was the Defence against the Dark Arts teacher and apparently not a very competent one at that as he was quite a nervous man.
Before the start of Harry's first school year Quirrell had tried to steal the Philosopher's Stone from the vault at the wizard's bank Gringotts but failed. He would make several attempts to steal the stone but ultimately would fail at the endeavor thanks to Harry Potter and his friends Ronald Weasley and Hermoine Granger.
Quirrell had also tried to end Harry's life during a Quidditch match between Gryffindor and Slytherin but Severus Snape saved Harry unbeknownst to others. Harry Potter expected Severus Snape to steal the Philosopher's Stone and thus was very surprised when he found Quirrell trying to steal it. Quirrell had Voldemort's face at the back of his head which he concealed by using a turban. Voldemort allowed Quirrell to die, via Harry touching Quirrell's face as it burned when Harry touched it, towards the end of "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone".
Remus Lupin was the werewolf Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher of Harry Potter in his third year and quite friendly towards Harry as he was also his father's old buddy, while Augustus Rookwood was a spy for Voldemort during the First Wizarding War who also guided Voldemort in the right path as to how to obtain the prophecy in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix".
Selwyn the Death Eater was mainly responsible for torturing Xenophilius Lovegood who was the father of Luna Lovegood, one of Harry's friends, in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows".
9. Which Death Eater was responsible for recruiting giants for Voldemort's cause and was also notable for being the executioner of dangerous beasts in the Ministry of Magic between the First and Second Wizarding Wars?

Answer: Walden Macnair

Walden Macnair fought for Voldemort during the First Wizarding War but avoided Azkaban by claiming that he was under the influence of the Imperius Curse.
Macnair spent the time of between the First and Second Wizarding War by being on the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures at the Ministry of Magic.
During Harry's third year Macnair was the executioner for Hagrid's Hippogriff Buckbeak but Buckbeak survived thanks to the efforts of Harry Potter and his friend Hermione Granger by the use of a Time Turner.
During Harry Potter's fifth year Macnair was sent by Voldemort to recruit the reclusive Giants to the Death Eaters' cause in which Macnair succeeded.
According to Harry Potter Wiki, Macnair was the one responsible for the murder of Broderick Bode, who was an Unspeakable for the Department of Mysteries, by sending a pot of Devil's Snare in disguise to St Mungo's Hospital where Mr Bode was staying.
Macnair also participated at the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
The last we hear of Macnair was that he was slammed against Hogwarts Castle walls by Rubeus Hagrid who remembered him from the Buckbeak's case. He became unconscious and probably is serving time for good in Azkaban if he survived.
Alecto Carrow and Yaxley were the Death Eaters who fought mainly in the Second Wizarding War while Dolores Umbridge, though not a Death Eater herself, shared many of the Death Eaters' beliefs working in the Ministry of Magic before and after the Ministry came under Voldemort's control.
10. Which person was impressed enough by Lord Voldemort that he joined up in the ranks of the Death Eaters before he turned 18 but grew disillusioned with Voldemort's cause a couple of years later and was actually the first person to discover Voldemort's secret to immortality?

Answer: Regulus Black

Regulus Black was the younger brother of Sirius Black and was so impressed by Voldemort that by age 16 got his Dark Mark during the time of the First Wizarding War.
However, when Voldemort used the Black family House Elf Kreacher to test the defences around Slytherin's Locket, which was a Horcrux, and left him to die (but he survived using elf magic), Regulus Black decided then and there to defect from the Death Eaters' cause.
Regulus thus found out about Voldemort's Horcruxes after the attempt on Kreacher's life and was the first one to do so. Regulus created a fake locket and replaced it with the real one in the cave but during the escape from the cave was dragged to his death by the Inferi, which are animations of the dead brought back to life by wizards.
Before dying Regulus had instructed Kreacher to hide the circumstances of his death from everyone, including his family, and years later in his search for Horcruxes Harry Potter discovered the fake locket when he went to the cave along with Albus Dumbledore. Harry got the real locket from Kreacher to destroy as Kreacher had failed to do so after all these years as Horcruxes require really powerful magic in order to be destroyed, e.g. Basilisk's venom.
Pansy Parkinson was a Slytherin student and an ally of Draco Malfoy studying at the same year as Harry but was no Death Eater.
Amycus Carrow was another Death Eater in the Second Wizard War and brother of Alecto Carrow.
