Pureblood, Mudblood, Muggle or Squib Quiz
Can you categorize these character from "Harry Potter" as Pureblood (no muggles in family tree), Mudblood (wizard or witch with muggle parents), Muggle (non-magic person born to non-magic parents), or Squib (non-magic person born to wizarding family)?
Argus Filch is the cantankerous caretaker of Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry that readers first meet in "Philosopher's Stone" at the Start-of-Term Feast on the first day of school. Harry discovers that Filch is a squib in "Chamber of Secrets" when he sees a letter from a company called 'Kwikspell' that offers courses on learning magic.
When Harry mentions it to Ron in the next chapter, Ron explains that Filch is a squib - someone born into a magic family that cannot do magic, themselves.
2. Neville Longbottom
Answer: Pureblood
Neville Longbottom, friend and fellow Gryffindor with Harry Potter, makes his first appearance in "Philosopher's Stone" on Platform 9 3/4 where he is complaining that his toad, Trevor, is missing. It is learned over the course of the series that Neville comes from a longstanding and powerful wizarding family, something that makes life for Neville very hard.
At one point, his family thought he might be a squib, but eventually he did exhibit magical abilities, albeit poor ones.
3. Colin Creevey
Answer: Mudblood
Colin Creevey makes his first appearance in "Chamber of Secrets" when he is sorted into Gryffindor by the Sorting Hat. It is never explicitly stated in the books that Colin is muggle-born, but his obvious unfamiliarity with things of the magic world (like moving pictures, for instance) lends evidence to the fact. Colin's status as a muggle-born was confirmed by author J.K. Rowling in an interview in 2007 (source: Muggles' Guide to Harry Potter).
4. Hermione Granger
Answer: Mudblood
Hermione Granger first appears in "Philosopher's Stone" when she intrudes on Ron and Harry in their compartment on the Hogwart's Express. It is evident early on that Hermione is muggle-born, as she makes reference to her parentage, but the first time we hear the term mudblood as a derogatory reference to muggle-borns is when Draco Malfoy calls her the name in "Chamber of Secrets".
She needs to explain to Harry how awful a term it is, by insinuating that muggle-borns are filthy and have polluted blood.
5. Tom Riddle, Sr.
Answer: Muggle
Tom Riddle, Sr. is, of course, the father of Tom Marvolo Riddle, AKA Lord Voldemort. We never actually meet Tom Riddle, Sr. in the books, apart from reference to him through memories. In "Chamber of Secrets", young Tom Riddle explains to Harry that he hated that his father was a muggle.
6. Lily Potter
Answer: Mudblood
Lily Potter (née Evans) is referred to early in "Philosopher's Stone" when we hear that Harry's parents have both been killed by Lord Voldemort, and the first time we 'see' her in the books is when Harry sees her (and his father) in the Mirror of Erised.
It is learned pretty early on that she is muggle-born when Lily's sister (Aunt Petunia to Harry) explains their background, how everyone in the family was so proud that Lily was a witch, and how she (Petunia) thought Lily was actually a freak.
7. Arabella Figg
Answer: Squib
Mrs. Arabella Figg does not make too many appearances in the books, but we know her from the beginning of "Philosopher's Stone" when we learn that Harry usually has to stay with her during Dudley's special events (like birthdays). Harry visits her once before he gets his invitations to Hogwarts.
She is not mentioned again until "Goblet of Fire", and doesn't appear again until "Order of the Phoenix". In that appearance, she reveals to Harry that she is a squib whose job it was to watch over him as he grew up with the Dursleys, and then to guard him as (herself) a member of the Order of the Phoenix.
8. Ron Weasley
Answer: Pureblood
Ron Weasley is introduced in "Philosopher's Stone" at King's Cross Station when Harry can't figure out how to get to Platform 9 3/4. They subsequently share a compartment on the Hogwart's Express and begin their long friendship. On the train, Harry meets Draco (again), along with his cohorts Crabbe and Goyle, and he implies that, in spite of Ron's bloodline, the Weasleys are an inferior kind of wizarding family.
9. Draco Malfoy
Answer: Pureblood
Draco Malfoy first runs into Harry while they are both trying on school robes at Madam Malkin's Robes For All Occasions (in "Philosopher's Stone", of course). While talking, Draco expresses his hopes of being sorted into Slytherin House, and talks about the superiority of pureblood wizarding families.
10. Dudley Dursley
Answer: Muggle
Dudley Dursley, along with his family, is introduced very early in "Philosopher's Stone" as Harry must endure spoiled brat Dudley's birthday. It is revealed even earlier than that that the Dursleys are muggles, when Professor McGonagall refers to them as "very worst sort of muggles" (just before Harry is left at their doorstep as a baby).
