Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. It is okay to get in a stranger's car if they know my name.

Answer: No

A bad person may see your name on your backpack, folder, or homework, or they may have been following you and heard someone call you by name. They may know your last name, they may know your parent's name, or brother's or sister's name. Don't get in the car, don't even go near the car. Walk away quickly and head for a heavily populated area. Find a police officer to report this to. If you don't see a police officer, go into a business and tell the adult behind the counter to call the police. If you're not near a business, find a woman with a child and tell her.

It is very important for you to report this, so that the person does not have time to go after another child who may not know how to be safe. Be sure to tell your parent(s) immediately.
2. A "bad guy" looks:

Answer: like anyone else

Most "bad guys" look like anybody else--like your teacher, someone from your neighborhood, or the postman. Do not assume someone is okay or not okay based on how they look.
3. It is always safe for me to walk home alone because I am responsible, know the way, and won't get lost.

Answer: False

I know you're responsible and I know you won't get lost, but there are people out there who like to hurt children and they are more likely to hurt you if you are alone. Walk home with a group of friends--you'll all be safer and you get to talk and spend time with each other before homework. ;)
4. This lie is used to lure kids into or near cars:

Answer: all of these

All of these lines have been used to lure children to cars where there are kidnapped--some never to be seen or heard from again. Do not approach ANY stranger's car for ANY reason. They may offer you candy, money, a free pet, a video game, a comic book, or give you a sad story to try and get you near. STAY AWAY from the vehicle and if the person tries to grab you scream as loud as you can "This person is not my father!" (or mother, if it's a woman) and "I do not know this man!" (woman). Scream LOUD and keep repeating these messages. Twist around a lot so you're hard to hold onto.

The second you get away, head to a heavily populated area. Find a police officer to report this to--if you don't see a police officer, go into a business and tell the adult behind the counter to call the police. If you're not near a business, find a woman with a child and tell her.

It is very important for you to report this so that the person does not have time to go after another child who may not know how to be safe. Be sure to tell your parent(s) immediately.
5. Since nothing bad has happened in the area I live in, I know that I'll always be safe here.

Answer: False

Just because nothing bad has happened there in the past, does not mean it may not happen in the future. Always be aware of your surroundings--you can do this by not wearing headphones so you can hear what's going on around you, knowing where phones are along your route, and knowing which businesses are along your route. Do not go near a car parked along your route that is not always there, do not walk near bushes or clumps of high grass, do not approach someone you don't know, do not follow someone for ANY reason. An example would be: a young person may approach you and tell you they are selling their X-Box for $10, it's just around the corner if you want to look at it and they won't have it tomorrow or later--you have to look at it *right now*. Do not follow this person, it is not safe.
6. If my friend gets a ride from a stranger, I should:

Answer: leave and report it to the police

While there is safety in numbers, NEVER GET IN A STRANGER'S CAR. If you are with a friend who gets in a stranger's car and won't get out--or the person won't let them out--leave immediately. Try and notice what the adult looked like and what the car looked like. If you are able to, try and remember the first half of the license plate--don't try to remember it all, just the first half. Take the steps listed previously to contact the police and tell them as much as possible about the car, the adult, and what your friend looks like and was wearing.

In the US, you can call the police from any payphone by dialing 911 without having to put money into the phone.
7. All kidnappers are men.

Answer: False

Though not as often, women kidnap too. Remember, DO NOT guess if someone is safe or not based on what they look like! This includes their age, how nice their clothes are, how expensive their car is, or how nice they talk to you.
8. If someone tries to get you in their car or tries to grab you, where should you go?

Answer: any of these

Tell someone immediately, get ahold of your parent(s) and STAY PUT. Do not feel that because the police have been contacted it is okay to go back out and keep walking home (or wherever you were going). The person may have driven a half a mile up the road--you don't know, so STAY WHERE YOU ARE. Your parent(s) can pick you up or the police can give you a ride home.
9. You should listen to the little voice inside of you when it tells you you're in danger.

Answer: Yes

That little voice, called your intuition (pronounced in-too-it-shun) is usually right. If you feel threatened or in danger, look around and see if you can identify where the feeling is coming from and take steps to avoid that area/person. Keep your head up, look straight ahead, and walk like you own the place. You are less likely to become a victim if you act this way--bad guys look for people who walk slow with their head down, or who look scared. Think very strongly that you are very safe and get yourself to a different area. Then call your parent(s) for a ride. If you can't get ahold of your parent(s), call a friend and ask if their parent(s) will pick you up and tell them why.
10. All strangers are dangerous.

Answer: False

The word "stranger" means someone you don't know. There are over six billion people on this planet and most of them are strangers to you. And most of them are not dangerous and do not want to hurt people. But some of them do and you can't tell just by looking at them or talking to them--so be smart, and be safe. Don't go someplace you don't know with a stranger, don't get in a stranger's car, don't go into a stranger's house. EVER.
