Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Thanksgiving is one of the favorite holidays for kids because they get a three day weekend out of school. What day of the week is Thanksgiving in the US usually celebrated on?

Answer: Thursday

The calendar date of Thanksgiving changes from year to year, but traditionally it is on a Thursday in November. In 1941, the President of the United States, President Roosevelt, made it an official law of having Thanksgiving the fourth Thursday of November, but some areas in different years have it on the last week of November instead. Schools traditionally try to have the holiday around their fall break.
2. My dad decided to start off this Thanksgiving by reading a little bit of United States history as a family. Which people celebrated one of the first American Thanksgivings with Native Americans in 1621?

Answer: Pilgrims

The pilgrims had one of the first Thanksgiving feasts in the United States after they miraculously survived moving to America. Many of their friends and loved ones had died on the way or had been unable to make the journey. When they had their first harvest they celebrated with Native Americans to give thanks to God for sparing their lives.

There are many other "days of thanks" where people paused to thank God, such as George Washington's troops in the American Revolution and the armies in the American Civil war.
3. This large bird is the main part of a big feast. It takes my mom several hours to cook it. Which bird of a feather is known for saying "gobble"?

Answer: turkey

Thanksgiving day is sometimes referred to as "Turkey Day" because so many families serve turkey as the main course of their dinner. Thanksgiving dinner usually includes many other dishes such as corn, sweet potato casserole, mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, and cornbread stuffing.
4. My mom is also making several sweet things in the kitchen for Thanksgiving dinner. Which one of these is NOT a pie that is usually served for Thanksgiving?

Answer: bamboo

Most pies are made from seasonal vegetables and fruits that are harvested in the fall. Pumpkin, apple, pecan, buttermilk, rhubarb, chocolate, and mincemeat are a few of the kinds of pies you would find at most family's tables.
5. Downtown in the city there are many festivities going on. Which event do some cities have that include a march of floats, music, characters, and sometimes Christmas decorations?

Answer: a parade

Many towns and cities in the United States have a Thanksgiving day parade to celebrate the beginning of the holiday and Christmas season. Some towns have a lighting of the town Christmas tree during the parade festivities as well. Many families also set up their Christmas tree in their own homes during Thanksgiving. Charities and other groups will sometimes do Thanksgiving drives, or events to raise money to help those in need.
6. I hear the doorbell ring! Thanksgiving usually involves many people. Traditionally which people do most families have as guests for Thanksgiving dinner?

Answer: family and friends

Thanksgiving dinner is mainly a celebration with family and friends. Many families have relatives from out of town that come to celebrate and visit. Most politicians, the IRS, and secret service agents have their own families they celebrate Thanksgiving with, doing normal traditions.
7. There are many people talking and laughing, but Dad needs everyone to be quiet before he does this tradition. Which of these is a tradition of blessing the food before everyone eats?

Answer: pray

It is not polite to be talking while the main person prays over the food, so usually a person will get everyone's attention before they begin. Prayer is a way of being thankful for the food and all the wonderful things families have been blessed to have during the year.
8. Many families have games and traditions they do after Thanksgiving dinner. Which one of these is NOT a common Thanksgiving activity?

Answer: an Irish jig

Irish jigs are more commonly connected with St. Patrick's Day in the spring. Many families will have each individual share what they are thankful for. Another tradition is to make a wish with the wing bone of a turkey (a custom that was started by Romans and passed on by English colonists).

There are also many sports that have games and championships on Thanksgiving Day in the United States. In some areas where it is colder, families have fun with snow outside, such as a building snowmen and snowball fights.
9. My family reads this book as part of our Thanksgiving tradition. Which book is commonly read by Christians to celebrate the religious meaning of the holiday?

Answer: The Bible

10. This event is usually the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. What do people commonly do on "Black Friday"?
