Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ants are able to "march" because they have legs. How do snakes move?

Answer: They slither

Snakes slither across the ground in order to get from one place to another. They can't crawl because they don't have legs. Instead of legs, they use their ribs and their scales to move, sliding on their belly. They can move very fast doing this.
2. Which of the following animals jumps or hops to get from place to place?

Answer: Kangaroo

A kangaroo can move quickly by jumping. Its tail is used for balance as it jumps. Young kangaroos are not able to keep up with their mothers and they may hitch a ride in their mother's pouch. Kangaroos can walk, but they walk much more slowly than they jump.
3. Which of these animals climbs trees and sometimes jumps from tree to tree?

Answer: Squirrel

Squirrels are excellent climbers and can go head-first down trees because they have special "ankle" joints that can twist backwards and very sharp claws. Squirrels can leap from tree to tree and some can even soar using special flaps along their sides. These squirrels are called flying squirrels.
4. What is the word that is used to describe a duck walking?

Answer: Waddling

Waddling means that a duck's rear end moves when they walk from side to side. Ducks waddle because they are not made to spend much time on land walking. They have large webbed feet for swimming. Their feet are set far back on their bodies so that they can help them take off from water. Ducks look funny when they walk on land, but on water and in the air, they are beautiful.
5. What word might be used to describe how a butterfly moves?

Answer: Fluttering

Butterflies fly from flower to flower in order to eat. Most butterflies move up and down when they flap their wings. This type of flying is called fluttering. Fluttering is not very predictable. That makes it difficult for predators to catch the butterfly.
6. Which furry animal swims in the sea and often floats there, eating off its stomach?

Answer: Sea otter

Sea otters may live their entire life in the water. They have webbed feet and a strong tail that helps to steer them through the water. They also have thick, waterproof fur that keeps them warm and dry. When they eat, they often set a flat rock on their stomach and use it to crack shells so that they can eat shellfish.
7. Which of these animals spends its entire life swimming underwater?

Answer: A fish

Fish are made to swim underwater. Many fish have scales that are placed to help them move forward more easily. Their tail is moves from side to side to push them forward. Their fins keep them right-side up while they move. They also are slimy. The slime helps them to move through the water and protects them from injuries. You shouldn't handle fish if you're not going to eat them. You will remove the slime layer and they may get sick.
8. Which of these birds can fly in place and backwards?

Answer: A hummingbird

Hummingbirds act like tiny helicopters. They move their wings so quickly that they can hover in the air and even move backwards. Hummingbirds are able to twist their wings while flying to make them work both ways! Because they use so much energy when they are awake, hummingbirds have a special type of sleep called "torpor". This sleep is like hibernation, but only happens overnight.
9. Which of these birds can't fly, but can run very fast?

Answer: An ostrich

Ostriches are able to run over 40 miles per hour. They can do this because of their large size and leg muscles, but they also have a surprise - ostriches run on their toes. They need to be able to run fast and also run for long distances in order to find food and escape predators. Ostriches are so large that they can even be ridden by humans.
10. Which of the following animals walks and runs - and many times does it with their special humans?

Answer: A dog

Dogs are one of many animals called "companion" animals. This means that people like to have them around to keep them company. Dogs make great companions because they can go many places with the people they love. This is because they are able to walk and run on all fours. Dogs can even swim and some have webbed feet!
