Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where was the last place Calder Pillay was before he disappeared?

Answer: Blenheim Park

According to the note Calder Pillay left for his dad, Walter, he was invited to Blenheim Palace to assist in some task.
It is "The Minotaur," the sculpture by Alexander Calder, that disappeared from the Square.
2. In chapter eighteen, there are three people who board a plane from Chicago to England to look for Calder. Which of the following is not one of them?

Answer: Arthur Wish

Tommy and Petra are Calder's friends from school, and it is Mrs. Sharpe who suggests going to England to look for him.

"Neither Petra nor Tommy had left the United States before, and Mrs. Sharpe hadn't left for over twenty years. Getting the three of them overnight passports, tickets, and enough clean clothing was a sizable job."

Arthur Wish is the anonymous businessman who donated "The Minotaur" to Woodstock-and just so happened to be with Calder the night he disappeared.
3. What is Tommy eating at the beginning of chapter nineteen?

Answer: Macaroni and cheese

This is while they are still on the plane en route to England.

Petra "had only picked at her food, and was trying to write while Tommy ate. He made such disgusting chewing noises that it was hard to concentrate... By the time he'd finished, Petra had read the same question about five times:

Is there a game that makes a player seem to disappear even if he or she is not really gone?"
4. In chapter twenty-one, Walter Pillay, Mrs. Sharpe, Petra and Tommy go out to eat at The Weasel. Which of the following menu options do they not order?

Answer: Partridge on Bubble-and-Squeak with Red Onion Marmalade

It was Petra who had the duck, Tommy the steak and Walter the fish.

Mrs. Sharpe's order was jacket potato and whipped squash.
5. Which of the following is not one of Mrs. Sharpe's "demands"?

Answer: "Curfew is at seven."

In chapter twenty-two, Mrs. Sharpe knocks on Petra's door to tell her "We'll meet you in the tearoom downstairs." It is there that the older woman unfolds the day's agenda:

"Mrs. Sharpe said calmly, 'I have a plan.' She paused... 'I mean the local police... They follow the rules, but you might not."

After running through her "demands," she hands each of the children "an envelope and said only, 'use this.'"
6. When Arthur Wish is found unconscious and taken to hospital, we learn he is related to Miss Knowsley. How?

Answer: She's his aunt

In chapter twenty-eight, we read:

"Miss Knowsley, who had been shopping at the butcher's, dropped her bag of partridge breasts with a whump into the sawdust underfoot. She clapped both hands over her mouth and wailed, "My Artie! Oh, my poor laddie!" She had to be helped outside and then back to her house on Alehouse Lane. The police who now filled the town had heard her words, and two detectives escorted her back to her house."
7. What was the first word Arthur Wish uttered upon waking from his coma?

Answer: "Fall"

This is in chapter thirty-six, and everyone in the room is so relieved that he's still alive that they "clapped."

"'Artie, dear! It's your Auntie Po! Fall! Yes, you had a little fall, my darling!' Arthur Wish only shook his head. 'Fall,' he said again. 'Under."'

Later in the book, he manages to say "boy in falls," thereby helping the authorities to locate young Calder Pillay.
8. What was the splash that Tommy heard while running in the maze?

Answer: "The Minotaur" falling in the water

Earlier in the book, five men had been hired to steal the 'Minotaur' and move it. But the plan fell through as the man who had hired them, Arthur Wish, was struck unconscious and therefore never met with the men.

In the end, two of the five decided to "hand" the sculpture over to the authorities.

"The sculpture was very heavy, but the two were masons and knew how to handle weight. They managed to tip and roll and tug until the sculpture was balanced on top of the old boards. Next they tied a large plastic covering over the top, one that said THAMES VALLEY POLICE-DO NOT DISTURB. The letters crumpled as the men lashed their load down with strips of police tape... 'Claimed they had no cell phone, and didn't want to leave the sculpture someplace where it might be stolen,' the police officer said, and then rolled her eyes. 'Again!'"
9. Does Arthur Wish's condition improve?

Answer: Yes

He asks for Calder in chapter forty-eight, "the day before Calder was discharged from the hospital".

When he is strong enough to speak, Art Wish tells of how he came to meet Calder-and how the boy wound up "under" the Cascades.

"My big mistake was to remember... As a boy, I'd heard some story about a secret platform in those rocks, and always dreamed of finding some part of it."
10. Which of the following is Miss Knowsley's cousin?

Answer: Georgia

She is fascinated by art, but has to pretend otherwise to avoid her father's wrath.

In chapter forty-nine, Miss Posy Knowsley introduces her cousin to Mrs. Louise Sharpe, Walter Pillay, Calder, Tommy and Petra:

"My name is Georgia, like the American painter Georgia O'Keefe."
