Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What animals did Andrew Ketterley (also known as Uncle Andrew) use as "test cases" in his experiments with the rings?

Answer: Guinea pigs

Uncle Andrew used guinea pigs while testing out his magic rings. He killed several and made one disappear, which was later discovered by Digory and Polly in the Wood Between the Worlds.
2. Where did the yellow rings lead someone?

Answer: To the Wood Between the Worlds

Uncle Andrew thought that yellow was "for the outward journey", but really, all yellow rings led to the Wood Between the Worlds, Polly's name for the mysterious forest with the magic pools in it.
3. Where did the green rings lead someone?

Answer: To another world through the pools

The green rings, contrary to Uncle Andrew's misconception that they led one back to England, led one out of The Wood Between the Worlds through any pool to another world.
4. After doing a test return to England, what world do Digory and Polly go to first?

Answer: Charn

Digory and Polly jump into a pool that leads them to the ruined city of Charn. They don't go to Narnia until later. Terebinthia is a city/province in Narnia, and Harfang is the ruined city of the giants from "The Silver Chair".
5. What words make up the final line of the inscription on the bell Digory finds in the palace at Charn?

Answer: ...what would have followed if you had.

"Make your choice, adventurous stranger;
Strike the bell and bide the danger,
Or wonder, till it drives you mad,
What would have followed if you had."

Digory reads this inscription and, of course, is tempted to ring the bell.
6. What is the first thing that happens when Digory rings the bell?

Answer: A portion of the palace falls apart

Polly tried to stop Digory from ringing the bell, but he is too tempted by it to listen to her. After a portion of the palace crumbles, Jadis, the last queen of Charn, is awakened.
7. How does Uncle Andrew describe Jadis to others?

Answer: A dem fine woman

Although Uncle Andrew was terrified of Jadis at first, he later gets a crush on her. When he talks about her to others, he always says, "A devilish temper she had. But she always was a dem fine woman, sir, a dem fine woman."
8. How does Aslan create Narnia?

Answer: He "sings it" into existence

When Digory, Polly, Uncle Andrew, the Cabby, Strawberry, and Jadis land themselves in what is to be Narnia, Aslan comes along, singing. As he sings, the world begins to take shape, remarkably similar to the creation account in the first chapter of Genesis.
9. What does Digory get in order to make his mother better?

Answer: An apple

Digory gets an apple from the garden in Narnia, plants it, and when a tree has grown from it, plucks and apple from it and gives it to his mother. When he does so, the apple instantly cures her.
10. What did Digory and Polly do with the rings after they returned from Narnia?

Answer: They buried them in the garden

Aslan instructed Digory and Polly to get rid of the rings so they would never be used again. They chose to bury them in the garden when Digory planted the healing apple. They aren't mentioned again until the last book.
