Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Because God had helped the Israelites, many people were afraid of them. Which king was so afraid that he wanted to curse the Israelites?

Answer: King Balak

King Balak was the ruler over the Moabites. He heard that the Israelites were conquering other cities and countries with the help of God. God had told the Israelites to drive out all the people in the land because He had given it to them as a promise. King Balak was very scared.

He decided to hire someone to curse them so that if they went to battle they would not be successful. (Numbers 22:1-4)
2. The king heard Balaam was the right man to curse the Israelites. What did he offer to give Balaam for the job?

Answer: money

Balaam was a prophet and whatever he blessed God blessed. When he cursed something, God cursed it. The king wanted to pay Balaam lots of money if he agreed to curse the Israelites. He sent his servants to tell Balaam, "A people has come out of Egypt. They cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land. For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed." Balaam said he would pray and ask God what to do, but the king's offer sounded too good to pass up. (Numbers 22:5-7)
3. At first Balaam told the king he could not go and curse the Israelites. Who had told Balaam not to go because the Israelites were blessed?

Answer: God

Balaam really wanted to go to the king and curse the Israelites because the king promised to give him a reward. However God told him not to go. Balaam was super sad and told the king's servants he could not go even if the king offered him all the gold and silver in the palace. The king offered to give Balaam a greater reward, so Balaam asked God again if he could go. (Numbers 22:9-20)
4. Even though he was warned, Balaam decided to take the king up on his offer. Who traveled with him and his donkey?

Answer: the king's servants

God was very unhappy but told Balaam he could go, only if he said what God wanted. Balaam took his donkey and went with the men the king had sent to him. They headed out together to the Israelite camp to meet the king. (Numbers 22:20-21)
5. God put an angel in the road to stop Balaam. What did the angel have in his hand?

Answer: a sword

God was angry that Balaam wouldn't listen to him. God didn't want his people cursed. He put an angel in the road that had a sword. The angel was supposed to stop Balaam or kill him. (Numbers 22:22)
6. Balaam did not see the angel that God put in the path.

Answer: True

Balaam did not see the angel. His donkey did and tried to hide. It wandered off the path and Balaam beat it to go back on the road. Then when it saw the angel again, the donkey tried to hide near a wall and accidentally hurt Balaam's foot. Balaam was furious! He beat the donkey harder.

The third time the donkey saw the angel there was nowhere to go. The donkey lay down and refused to move. Balaam hit the donkey harder than ever before. (Numbers 22:23-27)
7. Balaam's donkey was afraid and God opened its mouth to speak. What did the donkey tell Balaam?

Answer: "Why are you beating me?"

God saw that Balaam was mistreating his donkey and allowed the donkey to speak. Balaam was so surprised when the donkey asked him, "Why are you beating me?". Balaam was so angry he told the donkey he wanted to kill it. He told the donkey, "You've made me look really dumb!" The donkey said, "Haven't I always been good to you when you have rode me?" (Numbers 22:28-30)
8. The angel was standing by while Balaam and his donkey talked. What did the angel tell Balaam?

Answer: "If it had not been for the donkey, I would have killed you."

The angel asked Balaam, "Why are you beating your donkey? I have come to stop you because you are doing the wrong thing. The donkey saw me and was afraid. If you had come any closer I would have killed you and spared the donkey's life!" (Numbers 22:32-33)
9. God opened Balaam's eyes and when the angel spoke to him, he fell on his knees. What did Balaam tell the angel of the Lord?

Answer: "I have sinned!"

When Balaam realized that the donkey had saved his life by not going towards the angel, Balaam was really sorry. He also realized that God was very angry at him for going to curse the Israelites. Balaam told the angel, "I have sinned! If you are angry, I will go home!". The angel told Balaam to go ahead to the Israelites, but only to say what God told him to. (Numbers 22:34-35)
10. What did Balaam do after the angel spared his life?

Answer: He went and blessed the Israelites like God wanted.

When Balaam met with the king, he told him, "I can only say what God tells me to." Balaam made sacrifices to God. He saw the Israelite camp and started blessing the Israelites. He told them God would give them good things, protect them, and be with them. The king was very mad! However Balaam told him, "Shouldn't I do what God asks?"

So Balaam obeyed God after all and learned his lesson. The donkey didn't talk after that, because Balaam listened to what God asked. (Numbers 23-24)
