Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the last name of Roy's older brother Joe?

Answer: Dilly

Roy and his older brother Joe were half-brothers. They had the same mother but different fathers. Their mother was said to be a drunk and she died and both of their fathers were long gone. In the story, we found out that Roy was living at a foster home and Joe busted him out of there illegally.
2. What was the name of the man who gave Roy his first horse?

Answer: Mr. Jessup

The name of Roy's first horse was Lady Luck and he called her Lady for short. Lady was a beautiful horse; she was not as big as the Arabian horses that Mr. Jessup and Rick had on the Bar None, but she was very fast. She could practically run as fast as sound travels.

When Mr. Jessup introduced Lady Luck to Roy for the first time, he said that if Roy could ride her, he could keep her. Sure enough, Roy could ride her and Mr. Jessup stood by his word.
3. What was the name of the horse that Joe got to keep because he calmed the horse down?

Answer: Showdown

Showdown was a crazy horse who would not let anyone come near him or touch him. He seemed to not trust anyone at all but when Joe Dilly showed up, he walked inside of Showdown's stall and the horse immediately started to trust him. That was when we learned that Joe Dilly had a gift with horses.
4. Who got to race his horse in an actual race with other opponents?

Answer: Roy

After Roy and Lady developed a stronger bond between each other, Lady started to let Roy ride her more and more and she would not try to kick him off. Mr. Jessup and Rick saw how fast Lady could run, and they told Roy that he should race her in an actual race. Roy did, and he won his first race.

Then, he won the race that everyone was looking forward to and his reward for winning was $1,000.
5. What did Joe and Roy call the ranch that they were living on?

Answer: Bar None

While Joe and Roy were living on the Bar None, Roy wasn't attending school and a truant officer knew that he wasn't in school. The truant officer's name was Sally Red Dawn and she was said to be an Indian woman. Sally told Joe that his little brother had to start attending school. Joe got frustrated with her and when she left, he kicked the bumper on the back of her car.
6. What was the name of the man who tried to knock Roy off of his horse when Roy was dashing through the air on top of his horse?

Answer: Mullins

Mullins was a mean person who tried to cheat by knocking Roy off of Lady when they were in the middle of a race. Mullins knew that Lady could practically fly because of how fast she was. So, he knew that the only possible way he could win the race was if he cheated.

He tried to win by cheating, but Roy still came in first. Joe saw what Mullins tried to do to his little brother, and after the race was over, Joe started to physically abuse Mullins because of what he did.
7. What type of animal attacked Roy's horse?

Answer: Cougar

In the middle of the night, when there was a storm raging outside, Roy woke up at the sound of the horses at the Bar None freaking out. Joe and Roy rushed outside and Joe could tell that there was something else other than the storm that was frightening the horse. All at once, a cougar came out of the darkness of the night and it tried to kill Lady Luck.

It scratched Lady Luck and then the cougar was shot by a gun. Lady got sick and she ran a bad fever; Roy thought that he was going to lose her. The next morning when he woke up, he found out that his beloved horse was just fine and she was back on her feet.
8. Who set a ranch on fire at the end of the story?

Answer: Joe

Near the end of the story, Joe drove his truck over to the ranch that Mullin owned. He set it on fire and then the wind shifted and it started to blow the flames directly at the Bar None. Rick, Mr. Jessup and Roy started running around trying to get all of their horses out and after Roy got Lady Luck out of her stall, she ran back into her stall and there were flames right behind her.
9. Did Joe die at the end of the story?

Answer: Yes

At the end of the story when there was a furious fire destroying the Bar None, Joe came back to save his little brother and he was riding Showdown. They crashed into the area where Lady's stall was and Joe got his brother on his horse and then he spooked Lady making her run off through the flames and outside.

Then, Joe and Showdown were trapped by the flames and they couldn't get out and then the flames devoured them both while Roy and Lady were flying into the night.
10. Did Roy start to attend school at the end of the story?

Answer: Yes

A year after the fire destroyed the Bar None and killed Joe and his horse, Rick and Mr. Jessup reconstituted the Bar None and Sally Red Dawn talked Roy into attending school. Roy said that he was having trouble with his grammar and he continuously misspelled his words while he was at school. Roy was still living on the Bar None with Rick and Mr. Jessup and Lady Luck was by his side.
