Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are Carter and Sadie supposed to steal - er, borrow - from the Brooklyn Museum?

Answer: A statue

When the book opens, Sadie, Carter, and Khufu the baboon are standing on the roof of the Brooklyn Museum. Their two new recruits, Walt and Jaz (Jasmine) are there with them. They are supposed to get a statue from the museum, which, according to the god Horus from Carter's dreams, will help them save the world from the Chaos snake, Apophis.
2. How many parts is the Book of Ra divided into?

Answer: Three

The Book of Ra was divided into three parts for safekeeping. Each of the three parts represented one of the three aspects of Ra - dawn/morning, midday, and evening. Sadie locates the first part of the Book, hidden in an old statue at the Brooklyn Museum.
3. During Carter's class, what creature invaded the classroom?

Answer: A winged, fire-breathing, three-headed serpent

The winged, fire-breathing, three-headed serpent busted through the floor of the classroom. It spoke with Apophis' voice, and it warned Carter to "give up his foolish quest". To get rid of it, Felix threw his left shoe at one of the monster's heads. Walt blasted another head with his wand and turned it to stone. Julian tossed his sword and hacked off the monster's third head. Then Alyssa ordered a couple of statues to completely wipe out the snake.

Carter ended up having to tell everyone that the snake was just a test to keep them from panicking. He did tell his uncle Amos about it though.
4. Which person is not properly matched up with the path of the god/goddess they chose to follow?

Answer: Jaz, Nekhbet

According to Carter, Jaz was a healer, so she would have followed the path of Sekhmet, not Nekhbet. Sekhmet was a lioness goddess of war and plagues, but she was also the goddess of healing. Strange combo!

Alyssa followed the path of Geb, the earth god. Julian had decided on the path of Horus, the falcon-headed war god. Sadie followed the path of Isis, goddess of magic. At this point in the series, Walt has not decided on a path yet.
5. According to Amos, who is the third-most powerful Egyptian magician in the world?

Answer: Vladimir Menshikov

Vladimir Menshikov is the third-most powerful magician in the world. The Chief Lector (at this point, Desjardins) is the most powerful. And Amos, though he does not mention it, is the second-most powerful, making him the next-in-line for the position of Chief Lector.
6. Which two gods possessed Sadie's grandparents and attacked her on her birthday when she went to London?

Answer: Nekhbet and Babi

Sadie is taking the day off and visiting her grandparents in London because it is her birthday. When she gets there, Nekhbet is waiting for her, possessing Sadie's grandmother. Nekhbet tells Sadie that she (Nekhbet) and Babi are going to kill her. Sadie's response is to ask, "You've got a god named Bobby?"
7. What is the name of the village where Zia is sleeping? (The English translation, not the Egyptian name).

Answer: The Place of Red Sands

Apophis, possessing a spirit inside the Brooklyn Museum at night, tells Carter this at the beginning of the book. He also mentions that "she will die there if you continue this foolish quest."
8. According to the god Set, what did Ra use as a base for Apophis' prison?

Answer: Bat dung

When Vladimir Menshikov summons Set, he demands to know how to break Apophis' prison. Set beats around the bush a bit, talking about the delicious food that the gods ate at the victory feast, but eventually, he agrees to cooperate. He tells Menshikov, "Yes...what did Ra use for a base? Bat dung?"
9. What is the name of the hippo goddess who runs Sunny Acres, the godly nursing home, otherwise known as the Fourth House of the Night?

Answer: Tawaret

Tawaret was the Egyptian goddess of maternity and childbirth. In "The Throne of Fire" and "The Serpent's Shadow", she lives in the Fourth House of the Night, taking care of all the old and forgotten Egyptian gods who live there.

Tawaret is also known as Taurt or Taouris.
10. In "The Throne of Fire", Carter and Sadie win three extra hours from Khonsu in order to pass through the Eighth House of the Night, or the House of Challenges. In actual Egyptian mythology, which god/goddess won five extra days from Khonsu so that the twins Geb and Nut could give birth?

Answer: Thoth

According to Egyptian mythology, Ra (the sun god) heard a prophecy that a child of Geb (the earth god) and Nut (the sky goddess) would overthrow him. Therefore, he forbid Geb and Nut to give birth on any day of the year. Thoth solved this problem by gambling with Khonsu, god of the moon. Thoth won five extra days (in The Kane Chronicles, Riordan refers to these as the Demon Days) from Khonsu, and Geb and Nut gave birth to one of their five children on each of these days. Maybe Ra should have worded his order a bit differently!
11. Who follows Carter and Sadie through the Duat?

Answer: Vladimir Menshikov

Vladimir Menshikov trails Carter and Sadie while they travel through the Duat. Sadie spots him once or twice, but sees him as a white object in the distance. She had a feeling that they were being followed, but disregarded it because she needed to stay alert during their trip.
12. Who steps up to fight on Carter and Sadie's side when Apophis is possessing Menshikov?

Answer: Michel Desjardins

Michel Desjardins, the Chief Lector, fought against Vladimir Menshikov when he recognized that Apophis was the enemy, not the Kane family. He traveled through the Duat alone in a boat. Meshikov slammed Desjardins into the prow of Ra's sun boat, and knocked him out. Desjardins recovered, and cast a spell in an attempt to execrate Apophis, using a small figurine of the Chaos snake.

He used up his life force casting the spell, but he did manage to force Apophis a bit deeper into the Duat, buying Carter and Sadie some time.
13. What animal's skin is the Chief Lector's cloak made of?

Answer: Leopard

The Chief Lector's cloak is made of leopard skin. This is mentioned several times throughout the series. Panthers and lions didn't even live in ancient Egypt. And cats were considered holy and sacred in Egypt, because Bast's symbol was the cat.
14. Which woman is one of the lead magicians in the attack on Brooklyn House?

Answer: Sarah Jacobi

Sarah Jacobi is one of the banished Egyptian magicians recruited by Vladimir Menshikov when he was planning to attack Brooklyn House, where Carter, Sadie, Amos, and their trainees live. She uses two throwing knives in battle, and is a vicious fighter.
15. What is the Eighth House of the Night known as?

Answer: The House of Challenges

The Eighth House of the Night is also known as the House of Challenges. Carter and Sadie's father Julius, who is hosting Osiris, tells them this when they meet him in the Fifth House of the Night. To this, Sadie says, "I hate it already." He also tells them the the Eighth House of the Night can only be passed through at, well, the eighth hour of the night!
