The Kane Chronicles: The Red Pyramid Quiz

This is a quiz about the first book in one of my favorite book series, "The Kane Chronicles", by Rick Riordan. It's called "The Red Pyramid". The series is Egyptian-mythology-themed, but with some parts tweaked to make the book more interesting.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of Carter and Sadie's father?

Answer: Julius

Julius is an Egyptologist (a person who studies relics, hieroglyphics, etc.) from ancient Egypt. He travels to Egypt with Carter, while Sadie, Carter's younger sister, is left at home in London, England. She lives with her grandparents.

Amos is Carter and Sadie's uncle, introduced later in the book. Kane is their family name. And Seth is another name for Set, god of chaos and evil.
2. Which ancient Egyptian god did Julius attempt to summon, using the Rosetta Stone?

Answer: Osiris

Osiris was the Egyptian god of the underworld. Julius did succeed in summoning Osiris, but he also got the "other four"; Set (god of chaos), Nephthys (goddess of rivers and funerals), Isis (goddess of magic), and Horus (god of war and hunting). Julius ended up hosting the god Osiris, Sadie hosted Isis, and Carter hosted Horus.

Zia (a character who was not yet introduced at the time) hosted Nephthys. Set did not need a host, as his life force on Earth was connected to his red pyramid in Arizona.
3. What color are the hieroglyphics that glow above Sadie's hand whenever she casts a spell?

Answer: Gold

Sadie's spell hieroglyphs are gold. When Carter notices this, Sadie guesses that everyone has a different color and jokes that maybe Carter's color is hot pink. Julius and Amos Kane's hieroglyph spells are blue, and silver hieroglyphs do not appear in the book.
4. Because he is Horus' host, what kind of winged animal can Carter transform into?

Answer: Falcon

Horus was often depicted as either a peregrine falcon or a man with a falcon's head in ancient Egypt. Sadie can transform into a kite (but has trouble changing back again.) The goddess Bast can shapeshift into a cat, but not a winged one, and it is not mentioned whether anyone can turn into a dragon.
5. Which ancient goddess does Desjardins, the Chief Lector, summon when he wishes to prevent Amos, Zia, and the children escaping him?

Answer: Sekhmet

Sekhmet was a much-feared goddess, considered a demon, and was depicted as either a lioness or a woman with a lioness' head. In ancient Egypt, she was said to be a goddess of war. Zia tricks Sekhmet by having the ship land in a Magic Salsa factory and then telling Sekhmet that the salsa is blood. Sekhmet drinks and drinks the salsa until she falls asleep, and Carter, Sadie, Zia, and Amos escape.
6. Who is the crocodile god who kills Bast and sends her back to the Duat?

Answer: Sobek

Sobek was the god of water as well as crocodiles. He has the head of a crocodile. In ancient Egypt, some temples would have moats around them where live crocodiles were kept to honor Sobek. Like Sekhmet, Sobek was feared and considered a demon.
7. Who is Set's host?

Answer: He doesn't have one

Careful - while Set did try to influence Amos, Amos actually never did host Set. Rather, Set attempted to control/posses him. In the book, Set does not have a host. His life force is connected to the red pyramid that is being built for him. And while Zia, Carter, and Sadie do suspect Desjardins of being Set's host, they never confirm their suspicion.
8. Who is the serpent of chaos?

Answer: Apophis

In the book, Apophis is described as being "over a mile long and nearly 100 meters wide". The ancient Egyptians believed that Apophis was attempting to devour Ra's sun boat whenever they saw the red sky at sunset. Sadie realizes that Apophis is the real enemy, and that he has been possessing Set's closest minion, Face of Horror, and manipulating Set to help Apophis rise.

Apophis is also known as Apep.
9. What does Sadie use to force Apophis to become visible?

Answer: The feather of truth

Sadie tosses the feather of truth up into the sky at Apophis (the serpent of chaos). This forces him to become visible, and Carter is able to see the snake. Instead of killing Set, Sadie and Carter let him go, but they force him to swear that he'll help them when they order him to.
10. What does Carter call "Sadie's favorite spell"?

Answer: Ha-di

Ha-di causes things to explode. Sadie uses this spell multiple times throughout the book. She uses it to blast open the library door so she and Carter can get inside. She repeats it when they fight the lioness goddess Sekhmet.
