Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Kronos's scythe named?

Answer: Backbiter

While Luke was going through the process of preparing his body for Kronos, telekhines remodeled Backbiter into the six-foot-long scythe. Half mortal steel and half celestial bronze, one touch of it can sever your soul from your body!
2. Hermes was about to blast Percy to smithers when the half-blood son of Poseidon told the god that he wasn't a good-enough father. Why didn't Hermes vaporize him?

Answer: Percy bore the curse of Achilles

Hermes looks major angry, but Rick Riordan writes: "'Percy Jackson,' he said, 'because you have taken on the curse of Achilles, I must spare you.'" Then Hermes has something like a minor breakdown before pulling himself together and going off to help the Olympians fight Typhon.
3. Nico is the demigod son of Hades, so he is half mortal and half god. If he's half Greek on his father's side, what nationality was he on his mother's side? (Think back to Maria di Angelo.)

Answer: Italian

In the scene between Hades and Maria, Percy described her as having an Italian accent. So this makes Nico half Greek god and half Italian mortal. (What fun!)
4. Percy described Nico as having a hungry look in his eyes when he spoke about becoming invincible. Later on, he realizes why. Why was Nico so desperate to have Percy bathe in the River Styx?

Answer: So he could trade with his father - a visit with Percy for information

Nico brought Percy to the Underworld. Then, he tricked him into going to the Palace. The Furies came down - swoop - and grabbed the boys. Then off they flew, bringing them to Hades. Nico revealed that he was really sorry, but he needed to bring Percy to the Underworld to find out more about Maria di Angelo.

But later on he showed that he was genuine about the "invincible plan" because he rescued Percy and brought him to the Styx.
5. What three things does Annabeth always have with her? (Other than clothes and other daily necessities)

Answer: Her Yankees cap, Daedalus's laptop, and her knife

Throughout the series, Annabeth is seen with her knife stuck somewhere on her body. She carries it everywhere because of the memories it reminds her of. She also brings Daedalus's laptop with her to the battlefield so she can browse through the inventor's ideas. And her Yankees cap is always with her, a gift from her mother.
6. Many died in the final battle (and not all of them human). Which demi-god was NOT among the dead by the end of the book?

Answer: None of these answers

I couldn't help it; I just had to add a trick question. Of the DEMI-GODS that died, there was Luke Castellan, Michael Yew, Ethan Nakamura, Charles Beckendorf, Silena Beauregard, and a bunch of others. Luke had his famous moment of remorse right before he committed suicide to save Olympus. Michael was killed on Williamsburg Bridge after telling Percy to break the bridge. Grover is a satyr, and that doesn't make him a demi-god. So the answer is none of the answers.
7. While going to visit an injured Annabeth, Percy sees a bronze automaton of a woman in a fountain. The woman is carrying a basket of metal fruit, some of which she uses to throw at Percy when he insults her. Who is this ill-tempered woman supposed to be?

Answer: Pompona

The first thing Pompona said when she met Percy was, "Oh, fine. I suppose you want me to watch your bike too!" She threw bronze fruit at him when he asked her if she was supposed to be Demeter, and yelled something about being the Roman goddess of Plenty.

She then reveals that she is on Kronos's side, to which Percy tells her to "Watch the bike" and leaves (this infuriates her). Demeter is, of course, the goddess everyone thinks Pompona is, Persephone is the Queen of the Underworld and goddess of spring, and Hebe is the goddess of youth and a daughter of Hera.
8. Where did the demigods "crash" during the battle? In other words, where did they hang out, sleep, treat their wounded, etc. (Hint: think sort of fancy)

Answer: Plaza Hotel

Percy mentioned the Plaza Hotel many times, especially when he went to visit Annabeth after she was stabbed in the arm. He also described it as "fancy with a bunch of passed-out rich people slumped in their fancy chairs." Well, maybe not word-for-word, but close enough. Grover ate some of the furniture as well (Somehow, I don't think that'll sit well with the owner). Duane Reade is the medicine store that Will Solace sent Travis and Conor to when Annabeth was injured. I'm not sure if the Empire Five-Star Hotel exists.
9. During the war, Kronos offers a truce, and four people (if you can call them people, that is) go to Percy. One of them offers the hero a pithos, also known as Pandora's jar. Inside was one spirit: Elpis, the spirit Hope. Who was not part of this truce embassy?

Answer: Kelli

Kelli the empousa was killed in "The Battle of the Labyrinth" when Annabeth stabbed her in the back in Daedalus's workshop. There was an empousa with the group, but her name was not given. Prometheus is well-known for being the Titan that gave fire to mankind, and he was the one who gave the pithos to Percy as a way to tempt him to surrender. Ethan Nakamura just sort of followed, scowling and looking angry. Morrain was the Hyperborean giant who demolished the playground.

He might've also been the one who sat on Kronos by accident.
10. At the beginning of the novel, Beckendorf and Percy decide to blow up the Princess Andromeda, along with some of Kronos's monster buddies. However, Beckendorf gets caught and brought to Kronos, who tells a giant to upturn the pack that holds what the demigods were supposed to rig in the engine room. What falls out?

Answer: Cans of peaches

Kronos was pretty upset when his monsters didn't immediately disintegrate the moment Beckendorf's sack upturned. Instead of a few jars of explosive Greek fire, a dozen cans of peaches tumbled out! Turns out the Greek fire was rigged in the engine room, and Ethan was fooled. Kronos was just about ready to breathe fire when he realized this. And then Beckendorf sacrificed himself to destroy the ship and save Percy.
