Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Percy's story begins on a school field trip from Yancy Academy. One teacher on the trip was Mr. Brunner; Percy vaporized the other. What was her name?

Answer: Mrs. Dodds

Mrs. Dodds turned out to be a Fury, a monster of the Underworld, and attacked Percy. Percy was given a bronze sword by Mr. Brunner which caused Mrs. Dodds to literally crumble into a million pieces. When Percy returned outside, the entire school could not remember Mrs. Dodds, insisting their teacher was Mrs. Kerr.

The only person who seemed to remember Mrs. Dodds was Percy's best friend Grover, who returned to his summer home at Half-Blood Hill after Percy was expelled from Yancy Academy; his sixth school in as many years.
2. After school was out, Percy returned home to his mother's famous blue food, and her smelly, money loving husband. Percy left home almost immediately with his mother on vacation to Montauk Beach. Here they were interrupted by Grover, a hurricane and what maze-loving monster?

Answer: The Minotaur

Percy and his mother had traveled to the very beach where his mother had met his father. After the interruption, Percy and company fled toward Half-Blood Hill. On the way, their car was destroyed by lightning and Grover fell unconscious.

At the top of the hill, the Minotaur caught up to them. During the battle that ensued, Percy's mother was killed in a blinding light; Percy tore off the Minotaur's horn and killed the Minotaur with it. Percy had finally arrived at Camp Half-Blood.
3. Percy's spectacular entrance to Camp Half-Blood is to drool in his unconscious sleep. His first awake day at camp is an eventful one though; he sees the camp climbing wall, which rains down lava, the camp archery range, hitting his instructor in the tail, the fighting arena, and he blasts the camp bully out of the bathroom using toilet water. Oh, and he meets the Greek god of wine. Who is he?

Answer: Dionysus

Dionysus, hereafter called Mr. D. may be the Greek god of wine, but he is being punished by Zeus and can't have alcohol for 100 years. He therefore drinks Diet Coke.

Percy is placed in cabin 11, one of the twelve cabins representing the twelve Olympian gods. Cabin 11 is Hermes's cabin, which takes on all travelers until it is determined who their god-parent is.
4. Soon, Percy found himself playing capture the flag Camp Half-Blood style: no killing. During the game, Percy was again attacked by the camp bully Clarisse. During the fight, he used water for strength and defeated all four attackers. He was also claimed by his father, the sea god. What is his father's name?

Answer: Poseidon

Percy being claimed by Poseidon is problematic because Poseidon isn't supposed to be having children. The biggest problem; however, is that Zeus believes Poseidon used Percy to steal his Master Bolt. Percy is given the quest to retrieve the Master Bolt, wherever it is, before the summer solstice. The Oracle tells Percy to go west and Chiron believes he is to go to the Underworld.
5. After destroying a bus, courtesy of Zeus and Hades, Percy, Grover and Annabeth set off west on a train. They stop in St. Louis where Percy helps damage which U.S. national monument?

Answer: The Arch

Percy finds a monster at the top of the St. Louis Arch and the monster blows a hole in the side of the building. Percy is forced to plummet from the top of the Arch to the river 600 feet below. Luckily he is not hurt; being the son of Poseidon has its quirks.

After he finds his friends, he also discovers that the police are looking for him as a suspect in his mother's disappearance. Percy and company slip through the crowds and head off for Denver.
6. Percy and company pull into a diner in Denver hungry, but broke. Lucky for them a god comes in and offers to pay for dinner in exchange for retrieving the war god's shield from a local water park's "Tunnel of Love" ride. Which god is this?

Answer: Ares

Percy is reluctant to help Ares, but agrees to get the shield.

Ares and his girlfriend, Aphrodite, had been on a date at the abandoned park when they sensed the trap Percy had been sent to set off. Hephaestus, another god and husband of Aphrodite, took pleasure in embarrassing Ares and was set to televise their ride in the "Tunnel of Love" to every god in town. Unfortunately, what he got was Percy and Annabeth. Ares got his shield and a little of Percy's mind and they were off to Las Vegas.
7. Percy, Annabeth and Grover travel to Las Vegas in the back of an animal smuggling truck with a lion, zebra and an antelope. Upon arriving in Las Vegas, the group sets the animals free and runs from the truck. What magical location do they run to?

Answer: Lotus Hotel

The Lotus Hotel was open and inviting, and upon entering it they were handed credit cards that never ran out of money and told to go play the games. Soon though, Percy began to suspect foul play. His friends were engrossed in their games and had no time for any thought of the quest.

He questioned people there and discovers they entered in 1977, 1985, 1993 but were all teens and all claimed they had only been there for a few hours. Percy finally convinced the others to leave and discovered they had been in the hotel for days and had only one day left to complete their quest. Using their cards, they hailed a taxi to get to L.A. pronto.
8. Upon getting to Los Angeles, the crew promptly gets lost. They have an address for the Underworld entrance, but no one seems to know where it is. They find their way to a monster, something they seem to have a talent for, and after defeating him find a map to the Underworld. The Underworld is at _____ Recording Studios.

Answer: DOA

The entrance is in a side building, but the lobby is full of people unable to pay the toll across. The guard, Charon, (not to be confused with Chiron), doubts they will be able to pay since they are children, but when they show him actual golden drachmas, he lightens up and let them cross.

Hades' famous three-headed dog Cerberus is up next, but they get past him just fine with a red, rubber ball. Finally winding through the Underworld, with one near stop at Tartarus, they are let in by Hades' Army of dead soldiers which guard his throne.
9. Which one of the powerful, dark, magical items below did Hades claim Percy had stolen from him?

Answer: Helm of Darkness

Percy's discussion with Hades did not go well. Hades immediately began to accuse Percy and his father of stealing the Master Bolt and his Helm of Darkness. This was compounded by the fact that Ares' backpack had miraculously obtained the Master Bolt. Hades had let Percy in, but had no intention of letting him out.

Just as the Furies, Mrs. Dodds especially, were about to lead the Army to kill Percy, and take the Master Bolt, Percy smashed three pearls on the floor. The pearls became impenetrable bubbles which brought them back to Santa Monica Bay.

Los Angeles had been hit by an earthquake due to the anger of Hades, but Percy cared only about getting the Master Bolt back in less than twelve hours and stopping WWIII. Unfortunately, an old friend was waiting on the beach.
10. Waiting on the beach was the god who really wanted a war. He had given Percy the Master Bolt and held in his hands the Helm of Darkness. Which god had the Helm of Darkness?

Answer: Ares

Luke had originally stolen the items, being a son of Hermes, the god of thieves. However, Ares had taken them from him. Percy challenged Ares and actually injured him, but a noise from below scared Ares away. Percy got the Helm as a prize. He handed it to Mrs. Dodds to return to Hades who freed Percy's mother in return.

Percy and friends decided the only way to get the Bolt back was to fly through Zeus's domain, trusting he wouldn't destroy his own bolt. It worked, though Zeus warned the son of Poseidon never to try it again and the war was off.
