Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which book did Jo and Jack get married?

Answer: 'The Chalet School In Exile"

Jo and Jack have known each other for years before they get married, but their engagement still comes as a surprise on first reading 'The Chalet School in Exile'. They marry after their traumatic escape from Nazi occupied Austria.
2. How many children do Jo and Jack have?

Answer: 11

Although Jo always said she would be happy as the family's maiden aunt, she was thrilled to have more children than her brother and sister!
3. What was the name of Jo and Jack's first born son?

Answer: Stephen

First Jo had triplets, then three 'singleton' boys, Stephen (Steve), Charles (Chas) and Michael (Mike).
4. Which of the children were frequently naughty and blamed this behaviour on 'my devil'?

Answer: Margot

Margot, the third triplet, had been a delicate baby, who no one had expected to live. They had allowed her more freedom than the other children, not wanting to make her short life sad. Once she was proclaimed to be in excellent health, following time spent in Canada, she had developed the habit of getting her own way and so found it difficult to behave well.

She always blamed a little voice inside her head for her sins, claiming that her devil told her to do bad things.
5. One set of Jo and Jack's twins were identical.

Answer: False

They had two sets of twins, both fraternal boy/girl pairs. The elder pair were Felix and Felicity and Geoffrey and Philippa were the younger pair.
6. Which daughter was named for her mother?

Answer: Felicity

Felicity Josephine was born while Jo and Jack were in Canada. She is the twin sister of Felix. They were often described as being 'flaxen fair'.
7. Who wrote a piece of music for Cecil when she was born?

Answer: Nina Rutherford

Nina Rutherford was a talented pianist who came to the Chalet School and who wrote a simple little composition for the birth of Cecil in 'The Chalet School Fete'.
8. Who is not one of the Richardson children to whom Jo and Jack became guardians when their father decided to go off on a voyage into space?

Answer: Rikki

The Maynards met the Richardson children when they were on holiday in Austria, during 'Joey and Co In Tyrol'. Their father allowed them to do their own thing, as he was a scientist and was always too busy to see to his children.
9. What is the name Robin Humphries takes when she becomes a nun?

Answer: Soeur Marie-Cecile

Robin first comes to the Chalet School aged six. She is adopted by Madge and Jem after her father dies in a climbing accident. She and Jo were particularly close, and although she doesn't appear very often in the stories once she has become a nun, she is often mentioned by Jo and her family.
10. Who was Lydia Maynard?

Answer: Jack's sister-in-law

Jack had an older brother, Robert Maynard, who was married to Lydia and who had a son called Rolf. They do not appear in the books, but do get mentioned from time to time.
11. Which of Jo and Jack's children has polio?

Answer: Philippa

Towards the end of the series Phil falls ill and becomes very clingy. She doesn't like to leave Jo for long. She is very delicate and her health causes much concern to those around her.
12. In 'Summer Term At The Chalet School' Jo is involved in a train crash with her newest ward. What is this girl's name?

Answer: Erica Standish

Erica Standish was the daughter of a very old friend of Jo's, called Dacia Parsons. They meet in Oxford Street in London, and Erica explains how she has been orphaned and is to be, hopefully, cared for by Jo and Jack.
13. A small child is orphaned in the train crash in 'Summer Term At The Chalet School' and eventually is adopted by Jack and Jo. What is her name?

Answer: Marie-Claire

Marie-Claire de Mabillon is orphaned in the train crash and Jo takes her back to Freudesheim with her. Although her relatives can be found, they do not want to acknowledge her as they disapproved of the marriage of her parents, so Jo and Jack get to adopt her. Erica Standish, who had developed a great affection for the child, was thrilled by this happy news.
14. Which of the triplets became the Games Prefect at the Chalet School?

Answer: Margot

Margot was thrilled to hear that she was to be the head of games at the school. Len became the Head Girl and Con, the quietest of the three, was pleased to be the editor of the Chalet School magazine.
15. With such a large family, Jo needed a lot of help around the house. Her children were always expected to help with the younger children and the chores, but what was the name of the Tyrolean lady who had helped Jo from the time of her marriage and without whom the Maynard's would be lost?

Answer: Anna

Anna was always around when Jo needed her. She did all the cooking and cleaning and Rosli was appointed to help with the children when there were too many for Jo and Anna to manage.
