Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I like to _____ essays with my _____ hand.

Answer: write, right

The words 'write' and 'right' are homophones because they sound the same but have different meanings and spellings. Another homophone is 'rite', which means a religious ceremony, and 'wright' which means a maker or builder. The four different spellings are a good example of why spellings are so tricky in English.
2. The wind _____ the _____ kite high in the sky.

Answer: blew, blue

In this sentence, the word 'high' is another homophone, as it can also be spelled 'hi' as in the greeting.
Incidentally, the word 'wind' is an example of a homograph; homographs are words that have the same spelling but are pronounced differently according to the context of the sentence (the noun 'wind' which is a gust of air and the verb 'wind' which means to follow a path which is not straight).
3. She wants to _____ a bumble_____.

Answer: be, bee

The word 'homophone' is made up of two parts originating from the Greek language; 'homo' = same (as in the word 'homogeneous') and 'phone' = sound (as in the word 'telephone'). Other common parts of words with a Greek origin include 'anti' (against), 'tele' (far off) and 'chrono' (time).
4. I want to know _____ _____ has the best broomstick.

Answer: which, witch

Here's some little jokes for you...
Why do witches wear their names on their shirts?
So you can tell which witch is which!
What is a witch's favorite subject at school?
Spelling!
How do you make a witch itch?
Take away the 'w'!
5. He _____ all _____ sausages because he was greedy.

Answer: ate, eight

Three other numbers also have a homophone: one/won, two/to/too and four/for/fore. 'None' and nun' could almost be included as well!
A number joke for you: Why was six afraid of seven? Because 7 8 9 (7 ate 9)! There are plenty of jokes like these which are a play on words.
6. The _____ lion had a golden _____.

Answer: main, mane

Can you think of another homophone of 'main' and 'mane'? Hint: think of a New England state in the US.
Maine is the state in the northeast corner of the US and it has the city of Augusta as its capital.
7. The sailor _____ his boat while the cyclist _____ his bike.

Answer: rowed, rode

As well as rowed/rode/road, there is another homophone. Hint: think of a New England state in the US.
Rhode Island is the state which is the smallest in area out of the 50 US states and it has Providence as its capital city.
8. The _____ car fell into the sink _____.

Answer: whole, hole

One letter makes all the difference! In this case, the 'w' in the word 'whole' is silent.
Examples of homophones starting with 'w' and 'wh' (where both make the 'w' sound') include wail/whale, wear/where, wax/whacks, watt/what, way/whey, weather/whether, wet/whet and word/whirred.
9. Come over _____ if you want to _____ more clearly.

Answer: here, hear

The accepted alternative spelling of the |ee| sound when teaching phonics to young children is 'ee' and 'ea', which is fine but some words can be spelled with either of these and still be real words (albeit with different meanings), e.g. meat/meet, been/bean, deer/dear, heel/heal and peel/peal.
10. The rock _____ was _____ for making too much noise.

Answer: band, banned

One of the words with the most homophones that I've found is 'air'.
air = breathable gas
heir = a person who inherits
Aire = a river in Yorkshire
are = a unit of area equal to 100 square meters (it's what a hectare is 100 of)
