Answer: Dick and Dot

Dick and Dorothea ("Dot") Callum are invited to stay with their friends, the Blacketts, while the Blackett parents are away. However, when The Great Aunt arrives unexpectedly, they must hide out in the woods like the Picts, an ancient group of people who lived secretly when other tribes arrived in their homeland.

Answer: Nancy and Peggy

When The Great Aunt arrives unexpectedly to look after them while their parents are away, Nancy and Peggy Blackett (whose "real" names are Ruth and Margaret) decide to suffer for a good cause, like the martyrs they've read about in history books. Therefore they behave like good little girls during her visit instead of the fearsome pirates they would like to be.

Dot is happy when Peggy surprises them with the new flag. She had been thinking about sewing one while she was at school, but, she says, "I wasn't sure how it ought to be made." The scarab beetle is an ancient Egyptian symbol, which Dick and Dot chose partly because their father is an archaeologist.

The box is a packing crate that was once turned into a hutch to keep an armadillo, due to a mistaken belief that a human visitor named Timothy was actually an exotic pet. When the mistake was discovered, the box (still labelled "Timothy") was used for boots and shoes.

Answer: A knife

Jacky has left certain things, like an axe and some cooking equipment, in the hut on purpose. However, he thought he had lost his "huge pocket knife" in the wood. It comes in handy later for cleaning trout that he teaches them to catch with their hands.

Answer: The sail

The first few times they try to lower the sail, it comes down on top of them, and the sail gets wet in the water. This makes Dick in particular quite embarrassed. Later, he raises the sail in a rain shower, and gets soaked because he didn't know it would be full of water, which pours all over him.

Answer: Eels

Jacky suggests that if they will meet him at the nearby bridge, he will show them how to put out a "nightline" to catch eels. However, they are unable to accept his offer since they're busy with other plans ... and perhaps Dick and Dot were relieved not to have to clean eels, because they had a hard time with the rabbit!

Answer: Mary Swainson

Mary Swainson is a young farm woman who is well known to the Blacketts and the Callums. She drops The Great Aunt off at the houseboat on her way to catch a bus to leave on her vacation. This causes great confusion, because she is the only person who knows where the "GA" is.

When the whole neighbourhood begins to search for the GA, Mary is out of town and cannot solve the mystery for them.

Answer: Fox Moth caterpillar

Dick wants one for his own collection, and he has also promised a boy at school to trade one for a Poplar Hawk caterpillar. Dick describes the Fox Moth caterpillar as looking like "brown and black velvet", and he explains to the others that touching the hairs on its back can make your skin itch. The Fox Moth caterpillar eats heather.

Answer: A set of scales

After Dick took away the scientific supplies in the middle of the night, The Great Aunt noticed that a box was missing. It was easy to identify because it had the owner's name on it. She found it at the houseboat and carried it back to Beckfoot when the Callums brought her home in their sailboat.

However, she ended up giving it back to Timothy, since she knew he was a friend of her nephew who owned the houseboat.
