Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many new girls are there in the form this term?

Answer: 3

The three new girls are Libby Francis, Fern (Libby's cousin) and Rachel Denman. Libby and Fern will be attending St. Clare's on reduced fees as day girls. This is a first for the St. Clare's series - it isn't mentioned anywhere else.
2. What is the name of the stables that 'the day girls' bought?

Answer: The Oaks

The stables are called "The Oaks." Libby's parents, Mr and Mrs (Polly) Francis renovated the place, with the intent of turning it into a riding school. In return for Miss Theobald letting Libby and Fern go to the school as day girls, the riding facilities were open to any St. Clare's girl. Carlotta was very pleased at this, and became a regular visitor.
3. Who becomes the head of the form?

Answer: Carlotta

Carlotta is very surprised to be made head of the form, but Mrs. O'Sullivan had suggested that she would become the head because 'the responsibility would do her good.' Carlotta takes it all in her stride, and begins the task of leading the form. Except for a few minor set-backs caused by Fern, her time is quite successful.

At first, Janet is very jealous of Carlotta becoming head of the form, and becomes very moody and sulky towards Carlotta. However, Mam'zelle 'lets the cat out of the bag' in saying that Janet will be the head girl next term, much to her delight.
4. The third play a trick on Miss Adams.

Answer: False

In fact, the trick was played on Mam'zelle, during a French class in which a ghost story was being read. At certain points through the play, 'the noise box' - a small device that fits in your pocket, and when turned upside down, releases a ghostly wail, was used. Also, the girls had some invisible string tied to different objects around the room, so the blinds would come crashing down, apparently all on their own, or the cupboard door bursting open.

After a while, Mam'zelle fled to Miss Theobald in terror, and upon returning with the head, found out all about the trick. But, just like the good old Mam'zelle, she saw the funny side, and only punished the girls lightly.
5. Who is the third form mistress?

Answer: Miss Adams

Miss Adams is a short, dark young woman, who is rather plain and grim, but when she smiles, her whole face lights up. She is very stern, full of sarcasm, and has no time for the silly airs and graces of Fern. However, she is very much liked by the form.
6. Who is the teacher that springs the form's Midnight Feast?

Answer: Mam'zelle

Fern is very jealous of Carlotta and her popularity. So to spite her, she made an anonymous call to the school (to Mam'zelle), and told her that the third form was having a midnight feast. Immediately, Mam'zelle set off to stop the feast.

However, Will had heard Fern make the call, and quickly rode to St. Clare's to get Libby, who would be in a great deal of trouble if she was found there. Just before Mam'zelle walked into the room, Libby was saved by Will.

The form was punished by not being allowed to leave the school for the next two weeks. When the girls found out that it was Fern who had dobbed them in, they were very angry, and sent her to Coventry for the rest of the term.

Worst off all, her plan backfired - Carlotta wasn't even at the feast; she was sick in the hospital wing.
7. The play the form produce is called "Lady Dorinda's Diamonds".

Answer: True

The play was written by Rachel. Everyone was surprised that she wrote it - they thought it was Hilary. The main reason for the shock was that everyone believed that Rachel thought she "was a cut above the third form". When the play was performed, it was a stunning success.
8. Fern plays many tricks on Carlotta. Which of the following is NOT done by Fern?

Answer: Damaging her school books.

Fern has a great spite against Carlotta. To make her late to the auditions of the play, she winds the clock at the stable back an hour. So when Carlotta turns up to the play, she is an hour late, which makes the form very angry.

Later in the book, Fern grabs Carlotta's special scissors, and destroys the costumes for the play, then leaves the scissors lying around so it looks like Carlotta did it. However, her plan doesn't work, and Carlotta is immediately believed when she says she didn't do it. All of the tricks Fern played on Carlotta are found out, and she gets her great comeuppance in the end.
9. What is the name of the horse that only Carlotta and Will can ride?

Answer: Rocky

When Carlotta first goes to the Oaks to ride, she is insulted by Will because he prepared an old mare for her. When he turned his back, Carlotta raced over to Rocky, who had been branded as a very dangerous horse which only Will could ride, and jumped on his back. Carlotta began to ride Rocky easily, but Will was quite beside himself with worry. Then, when Libby explained that Carlotta used to ride horses in the circus, Will felt very ashamed of himself. From that moment on, Will and Carlotta have been firm friends.

Later in the story, Fern, in an attempt to gain attention, rode Rocky around the paddock. When Carlotta rescued Fern, she was accidentally knocked out by Rocky striking out because of the commotion surrounding Fern. Carlotta was taken to hospital, but soon was back to her normal self.
10. Lastly, Enid Blyton never wrote this book! It was written by Pamela Cox. In what year was it written?

Answer: 2000

This book was published in 2000 because many people had complained about there being a mystery as to what happened during the third form. Pamela Cox was asked to finish the series off, based on original ideas and concepts of Enid.
