Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Plum
Answer: Wednesday
"On Wednesday he ate through three plums, but he was still hungry."
The plums are large and purpley-blue coloured with brown stalks sticking out of the top. The two outer plums have green leaves attached to their stalks. As we turn over the page we can see the caterpillar crawling out of the last plum to look for some more food.
The caterpillar is small and green, with yellowish stripes; he has a red head and six dark brown feet - four just behind his head and the other two at the end of his body; he also has two small bluey-green antennae sticking up out of the top of his head and two little black eyes and a black mouth.
2. Apple
Answer: Monday
"On Monday he ate through one apple, but he was still hungry."
The apple is mostly coloured red and orange, but there is a small greener patch on the right side; it has a brown stalk attached. As we turn the narrow page we find the caterpillar crawling out of the back of the apple to look for something else to eat.
3. Swiss cheese
Answer: Saturday
On Saturday he ate a lot of food including one slice of Swiss cheese, which is yellow with a darker yellow rind on the left side. He also ate one slice of salami; the salami has a shiny reddish brown casing and a paler brown inside flecked with black, white and dark pink bits. Then he ate a lollipop, on a brown stick, which was coloured with blue and yellow spirals.
4. Strawberry
Answer: Thursday
"On Thursday he ate through four strawberries, but he was still hungry."
All four strawberries are coloured a delicious red, with small black flecks for the seeds on the outside, and bright green stalks at the top. The first and last strawberries are the right way up, the third strawberry is upside down, and the second is leaning to the right. As we turn the nearly full sized page we find the caterpillar crawling out of the fourth strawberry to look for some more food.
5. Chocolate cake
Answer: Saturday
The chocolate cake has been cut into a square, so we can see all the layers; it has a very dark brown base, then a pale brown layer followed by a rich chocolate brown layer, which is covered by a creamy coloured layer and topped with what looks like dark chocolate; the finishing touch is a red cherry on the top.
The caterpillar also ate his way through an ice cream cone, probably strawberry flavoured judging by the pinky-orange coloured ice cream on top of the pale brown cone marked with darker brown lines criss-crossing it.
After that he nibbled his way through one bright green knobbly pickle.
6. Pear
Answer: Tuesday
"On Tuesday he ate through two pears, but he was still hungry."
The pears are mainly green with a few yellow parts and some reddish brown patches; they both have brown stalks poking out of their tops. As we turn the page, which is twice as wide as the page for Monday, we find the caterpillar crawling out of the second pear, eager to find something else to satisfy his hunger.
7. Sausage
Answer: Saturday
The sausage is slightly curved with a shiny dark red skin tied at each end with brown string. The caterpillar also ate a slice of cherry pie, which has golden brown pastry stuffed full of cherries coloured pink, orange, red and purple. Not content with those, the caterpillar went on to nibble through a golden brown cupcake in a pale blue paper case.
8. Orange
Answer: Friday
"On Friday he ate through five oranges, but he was still hungry."
The oranges are, not very surprisingly, coloured orange, with small dark brown spots on their skins; the second orange has a brown stalk in the top, and the fourth orange has a paler brown stalk with a bright green leaf attached.
9. Watermelon
Answer: Saturday
The slice of watermelon is coloured bright red with black seeds and a bright green skin.
"On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon.
"That night he had stomachache!"
The little caterpillar's red face is looking rather pale, his bluey-green antennae are drooping to one side, and he looks very unhappy.
10. A green leaf
Answer: Sunday
"The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after that he felt much better."
He has nibbled several holes in a large lopsided heart-shaped leaf on a green stalk attached to the trunk of a tree; the lower part of the leaf is bright green with a few yellow patches, the upper part is a darker shade of green.
"Now he wasn't hungry any more - and he wasn't a little caterpillar any more. He was a big, fat caterpillar."
Presumably because he he wouldn't fit on the page otherwise, the fat caterpillar has only eight segments behind his red head; they are coloured in various shades of green with a bit of yellow in places. He still has the six feet, now a paler brown and boot-shaped; the front four are attached to the first three segments behind his head, and the back two are on the third to last segment. He is clearly a furry caterpillar since he has little yellow hairs sticking up at the top of his body. He is facing to right and looks as though he is wondering what will happen next.
"He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in his cocoon, pushed his way out and ..."
The cocoon is shaped rather like a long thin egg, with ten segments coloured in various shades from a pale golden brown through reddish brown to a very dark brown; each segment is different from its neighbours.
"he was a beautiful butterfly!"
The butterfly still has a red head with bluey-green antennae attached. His body is dark yellow, and he has long thin black legs. But the symmetrical wings are what make him beautiful. They have four segments each side; a purple one with a yellow oval containing a red circle with a green centre at the end; a green one with yellow, blue and purple parts and a series of three yellow and red semi-circles at the end; one with red-spotted yellowy-green parts leading to a dark blue tip decorated with yellow circles with red centres; and a bright blue segment with a big circle at the tip coloured pink, red and orange.
