Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Of the following, which one will generally not hurt and/or irritate a snail?

Answer: concrete

Copper creates an electric shock when a snail slithers over it, espresso is highly toxic, and bark is an irritant. The thick slime on the foot of the snail prevents it from being hurt easily.
2. If a snail crawled over the sharp end of a razor blade, would it cut them?

Answer: no

The slime of a snail may seem gross to you, but it is helpful to a snail. Using the slime, not only can they move, but it protects them from harmful and/or sharp objects.
3. Snails are gastropods. What does the word "gastropod" mean?

Answer: belly-footed

Some types of gastropods are slugs and snails. Snails are the most common of the gastropods.
4. Snails have many predators. Which of the following is not a major predator?

Answer: pig

Other predators include birds and humans. Although you can eat a snail raw, most people who eat snails prefer escargot. Escargot is a French dish; the main ingredient is, of course, snails!
5. Of the following, which is a tropical and sub-tropical freshwater snail?

Answer: apple snail

The apple snail can survive both droughts and large amounts of rainfall. Most apple snails lay their eggs above the waterline.
6. What, of the following, is the fastest type of snail?

Answer: speckled garden snail

The speckled garden snail moves up to 55 yards per hour. Any regular snail moves up to 23 yards per hour.
7. Which of the following does a snail NOT eat?

Answer: manure

Snails also eat leafy vegetation and some soils. They may also eat other snails depending on the type of snail.
8. Snails are nocturnal. This means snails are most active at what time?

Answer: at night

Many animals are nocturnal, including racoons, owls, bats. Being nocturnal means coming out at night and sleeping during the day.
9. What is the most deadly type of snail?

Answer: cone snail

This snail is deadly to humans, as it contains a neurotoxin. You can tell this species from others by looking at the shell. Cone snails' shells are long, pointy, and cone shaped.
10. From the day they hatch, baby snails eat the same foods as their parents.

Answer: true

Most snail eggs never hatch and some baby snails don't even make it through their first week. Though some food may be hard to get to, the little snails will eat anything their parents eat.
