Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Professor Horace Slughorn was the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher in which book?

Answer: None of these

In 'The Half-Blood Prince', Harry thought that Dumbledore was trying to persuade Slughorn to take on the Defense against the Dark Arts job. However, it turned out that Dumbledore wanted Slughorn for Potions while Snape took Defense Against the Dark Arts.
2. Which Defense against the Dark Arts teachers had, for lack of better words, a personal internal problem? (think 'the voice within' and 'Whomping Willow')

Answer: Lupin and Quirrell

Quirrell was possessed by Voldemort which eventually caused his death in 'The Sorcerer's Stone'. Lupin got bitten by a werewolf when he was a child hence he permanently became one himself. His close friends, James and Sirius (in their younger days) liked to refer to it as his 'furry little problem'.

The Whomping Willow was planted hence to keep Remus from escaping to attack anyone while in wolf form. It also served to keep others out during that period.
3. Who taught Defense against the Dark Arts in Harry's second year at Hogwarts?

Answer: Gilderoy Lockhart

Lockhart was the vain, blond haired, flashing smile wizard who was chosen for Defense against the Dark Arts in 'The Chamber of Secrets'. As if mirrors weren't enough, he had pictures and posters of himself hung all over the walls of the Defense against the Dark Arts room. To top it off, he set his students an essay on himself which only Hermione (who had a small crush on him at the time) managed to do well on.
4. Where can 'grindylows' be found?

Answer: In aqua habitats

Grindylows are nasty little water-dwelling creatures that ensnare and drag under all who stray within their reach.
5. What was 'Mad-Eye' Moody's real name?

Answer: Alastor

Moody's proper name was Alastor Moody. He was nick - named 'Mad-Eye' because he had a magical eye that could see everything at any angle at all times. Even Harry's invisibility cloak couldn't hide him from Moody's glance!
6. When practicing Occlumency, it's always a good idea to:

Answer: Do all of these

After his encounter with Voldemort in 'The Goblet of Fire', Harry found that he was able to involuntarily explore his enemy's mind at certain times. Fearing this ability would reverse in Voldemort's favour, Dumbledore appointed Snape to teach Harry Occlumency in Book 5, which is the the defense strategy against Legilimency which itself is more or less mind-reading.
7. Dolores Umbridge, the too-evil-to-be-true Defense against the Dark Arts teacher in 'The Order of the Phoenix', was described as having a similar appearance to what?

Answer: A toad

Umbridge (judging by the flattering picture of her in my edition of the book) really had a toad-like face and the tiny black bow perched upon her fluffy curls resembled a fly already doomed. 'Bulgy-eyed insect' was Trelawney's description.
8. What was Snape's reason for not returning to Defense against the Dark Arts after his turn?

Answer: He murdered someone

Seeing that Malfoy could not kill Dumbledore, Snape did the job himself and murdered the beloved Hogwarts Headmaster. After murdering Dumbledore, Snape went on to be Headmaster of Hogwarts the following year, thus leaving the DADA position open.
9. Is there any effective learnt defense against the 'Avada Kedavra' Curse?

Answer: No

Unfortunately, once that rush of bright green light comes at you, you're as good as dead, unless of course you're an excellent dodger.
10. Ah, finally, it is time for the grand question (not so grand for those of you who have read 'The Half-Blood Prince')... Who is believed to have jinxed the Defense Against the Dark Arts position so that every one of its teachers never returned to it after they had served a year?

Answer: Voldemort

Yes! It seems like it was He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named himself that jinxed the job. Why, one might ask? Because years before Voldemort became an evil Dark Lord, he had asked Dumbledore to become the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher - a request which was refused. Dumbledore rightly sensed that it was not wise for the then Tom Riddle to be allowed teach that particular subject and he stuck by this feeling. Obviously angered, Voldemort most likely placed a jinx upon the job so that each of its teachers would last no longer than a year.

This way, Dumbledore would always be in need of a Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at the end of every school year. How's that for revenge?
