Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the boy who aided Tintin in "The Blue Lotus" and whom Tintin later rescued from the Yeti in "Tintin in Tibet"?

Answer: Chang Chong Chen

Abdullah was of course the mischievous son of the Emir of Khemed (personally I'd have just left him with the Yeti though I'd have felt sorry for the poor snowbeast) and Quick and Flupke are other creations of the author. They were two brothers who don't get into mischief as much as Abdullah but nevertheless are entertaining.
2. What name is Georges Remi (Tintin's creator) better known as?

Answer: Herge

Rastapopulous and Allan were of course enemies of both Tintin and The Captain throughout the series. Mr. Cutts on the other hand was the Marlinspike butcher whom our heroes often telephoned by accident, or whom an anonymous grumpy lady would try ringing and often get Marlinspike Hall by mistake!
3. Who are the two pompous and idiotic nearly-identical characters who work for the police and befriended Tintin & Co a long time ago?

Answer: Thompson and Thomson

I didn't actually expect anyone to tick "Laurel and Hardy" but I'm sure you can see the similarities between the duos. Despite looking as if they could be identical twins, the two are not apparently related to each other.
4. Who was Tintin's friend/superior/acquaintance who ruled San Theodores on and off?

Answer: General Alcazar

Tapioca was in fact Alcazar's rival. It was touching to see them console each other in "Tintin and the Picaros" when Alcazar took over the government and said he'd given Tintin his word he wouldn't execute Tapioca. "We live in sad times" he said bitterly when Tapioca insisted on being shot.
5. Who was the absent-minded professor who invited himself along on Tintin and Captain Haddock's treasure hunt and who later became their closest friend?

Answer: Professor Cuthbert Calculus

Herge seems to have had a fascination with absent-minded professors. The three other choices all featured in his stories before he made Calculus a regular, probably because he knew he would eventually run out of new professors!
6. What was Tintin's friend the absent-minded professor's favourite device?

Answer: Pendulum

Calculus did in fact invent or build all those other things. Considering that poor Captain Haddock was caught in the clothes-brusher I think it's good he stuck to the pendulum!
7. Which of the following is NOT a fictional place in the world of Tintin?

Answer: Sahara

I must say Herge did such a good job of making up all these countries and their histories and cultures that I didn't even know they weren't real until I got older!
8. In "Flight 714" Captain Haddock anonymously slipped an old man five dollars (and tripped over a suitcase while day-dreaming about the man praising him). But who did this old man turn out be?

Answer: Lazlo Cariedas - a millionaire

Even though the Captain gave away money for nothing, he did get to ride in Cariedas' private jet. Although since it was hijacked by thugs working for Rastapopulous, perhaps they should have stayed on Flight 714! Mind you, aliens hypnotised them all and wiped their memories so at least they weren't traumatised for long.
9. What was Captain Archibald Haddock's favourite kind of alcohol?

Answer: Whisky

I said "was" because in the final story Professor Calculus secretly gave him a drug which renders all alcohol extremely disgusting. Until that time, he was extremely fond of his Loch Lomond whisky, and the odd tipple of rum. It's a shame there weren't more stories, I'd have liked to see how the Captain coped without drink from then on. Calculus should certainly count himself lucky if the Captain did not evict him from Marlinspike Hall or punch his lights out or both!
10. What was the name of the Italian opera star who often appeared in the stories, whether Tintin wanted her to or not?

Answer: Bianca Castafiore

I'm not sure why she was so celebrated; her singing seemed to upset so many people. Calculus liked her (in more than one way) but then again he is all but deaf.
