Herge Trivia Questions

1. How do they call 'Tintin' in the Netherlands?

From Quiz
'Tintin' Knowledge

Answer: Kuifje

Tintin and Snowy are known as Kuifje en Bobbie in the Netherlands. Captain Haddock is known as Kapitein Haddock.

2. How many Tintin books cover the search for Red Rackham's treasure?

From Quiz Red Rackham's Treasure

Answer: Two

This two-parter begins with "The Secret of the Unicorn" followed by "Red Rackham's Treasure". In the latter we read of the actual underwater search for the treasure, while the first book covers Tintin's search for centuries-old clues to the location of the large hoard of diamonds.

3. What breed of dog is Tintin's faithful companion Snowy?

From Quiz The Adventures of Tintin

Answer: Wire Fox Terrier

Snowy is Tintin's most frequent companion and has appeared in all of the original 'Adventures of Tintin' comics. Snowy was originally named 'Milou' by Herge and is referred to as a male throughout the series.

4. In "Tintin in Tibet", Tintin exclaims "Crumbs!" when he discovers that Snowy has found the Yeti's footprints. What does "Crumbs" mean?

From Quiz "Tintin": Exclamations and Often Used Phrases

Answer: Crumbs is a term of surprise

Crumbs is a euphemism for "Christ" that is used to express surprise and anxiety. It originated in the United Kingdom, and is commonly regarded as a British slang term. Crumbs is also the plural for a crumb, a small bit of a baked good that falls off. Tintin uses this phrase whenever there is trouble brewing, and it is interchangeable with his other favorite phrase, "Great Snakes!"

5. The story opens with the detectives Thomson and Thompson filling their car with half a gallon of petrol. Nothing unusual in that but what happens next?

From Quiz Tintin in "Land of Black Gold"

Answer: The car engine explodes shortly after they drive off.

One of the detectives had his cigarette lighter filled with a few drops of petrol as well. After the car engine explodes and they are waiting for the breakdown truck, the lighter explodes as he is lighting a cigarette.

6. In which book does Tintin first meet Captain Haddock?

From Quiz Friends of Tintin and the Book They Appeared In

Answer: The Crab With The Golden Claws

Tintin meets Captain Haddock while he is escaping. And of course, Captain Haddock was drunk.

7. On the cover of which book is Tintin in imminent danger of being executed?

From Quiz Tintin Cover Art Part One

Answer: Tintin in America

Executed by tomahawk, no less! Yes, among the many people who try to do away with our hero during his time in the US are a tribe of Blackfoot Native Americans. The scene in which they tie him to a stake and prepare to chastise him is reproduced on the cover.

8. In which book does Tintin first meet Captain Haddock?

From Quiz Tintin and Friends (and Foes)

Answer: The Crab With the Golden Claws

'The Crab With the Golden Claws' is the Tintin adventure in which he first meets Captain Haddock, who is the captain of the liner Karaboudjan.

9. "Cough, cough. Right, listen here. I'm an American. A very rich American, to be precise, who's known as 'The Millionaire Who Never Laughs'. And I have a private jet on which Tintin and his friends have flown."

From Quiz "Tintin" Interviews

Answer: Laszlo Cariedes

Cariedes actually surprised everyone (including himself) by laughing several times before the flight (at Professor Calculus, not WITH him). What is even more surprising is his game of battleships with Captain Haddock. Cariedes wins every round, as if he could see his opponent's paper. Surely a coincidence there's a secret TV camera above the captain's table...?

10. In "Tintin In The Picaros" who said: "A revolution without bloodshed?! Without reprisals?! It's unthinkable!"?

From Quiz Tintin Dialogue: Who Said What?

Answer: General Alcazar

Tintin promised to stop General Alcazar's men from drinking, if the General promised no bloodshed during his coup. That was very noble of Tintin, considering the current government had conspired to kill him and his friends.

11. What is Captain Haddock's favourite expression?

From Quiz Tintin - Part 2

Answer: "Blistering Barnacles!"

Tintin's favorite expression was "Great Snakes." The millionaire in "Flight 714" said "Stocks and Shares". And "Diavolo" was often said by the gangster, drug-smuggler, gun-runner, slave-trader, kidnapper and all-round cad Rastapopulous (I can't use stronger language than "cad" on a family quiz site).

12. What was the name of the boy who aided Tintin in "The Blue Lotus" and whom Tintin later rescued from the Yeti in "Tintin in Tibet"?

From Quiz Tintin - Part 1

Answer: Chang Chong Chen

Abdullah was of course the mischievous son of the Emir of Khemed (personally I'd have just left him with the Yeti though I'd have felt sorry for the poor snowbeast) and Quick and Flupke are other creations of the author. They were two brothers who don't get into mischief as much as Abdullah but nevertheless are entertaining.

13. The adventure starts off with a plane crash landing into a meadow (a theme that keeps on recurring throughout the book). How do the pilots respond to Tintin's offer of assistance?

From Quiz Tintin and the Black Island

Answer: They shoot him

The pilots shoot him because they had their 'orders'. Thankfully the bullet just grazes Tintin's ribs and he is up and running in a day.

14. When the climate becomes inexplicably hot, Tintin decides to go to the Observatory to check things out. What was the director doing when Tintin meets him?

From Quiz The Shooting Star

Answer: Watching his colleague do complex calculations

The director and his assistant were trying to calculate the time when the meteorite will collide with the earth. Disturbed by the interruption, the director asks Tintin to go and look at the telescope. And yes, the predictions made by the assistant don't come true.

15. Which character is named after "an important food fish of the cod family?"

From Quiz Tintin Characters Defined

Answer: Captain Haddock

It is interesting Tintin's friend, a sailor, is named after a fish. Captain Haddock debuted in "The Crab with the Golden Claws."

16. What drink do the Thompsons buy for Tintin?

From Quiz The Crab With the Golden Claws

Answer: A beer

This came to 45 pence.

17. Which county in England is Eastdown in?

From Quiz The Black Island

Answer: Sussex

Eastdown is, of course, a fictional place. Seemed nice enough though.

18. Which song does the cleaner at the museum whistle?

From Quiz The Broken Ear

Answer: March of the Toreadors

The lyrics 'Toreador on guard...' seem rather inappropriate given that he fails to guard the idol which is stolen.

19. What happens to the messenger sent to meet Tintin?

From Quiz The Blue Lotus

Answer: He is poisoned

He is poisoned by Rajaijah on the tip of a dart.

20. What is the name of the eccentric doctor who Tintin meets on board ship?

From Quiz Cigars of the Pharaoh

Answer: Doctor Sarcophagus

His first name was Sophocles.

21. What is the name of the professor to whom Tintin returns the briefcase?

From Quiz King Ottokar's Sceptre

Answer: Alembick

He lives at 24 Flyaway Road

22. Which city do Tintin and Snowy arrive in at the start of the story?

From Quiz Tintin In America

Answer: Chicago

Chicago is known as 'the windy city'.

23. The setting for this adventure is a US city. Crime rates are very high and Mob bosses are ruling the city. Which city is the focal point of 'Tintin in America'?

From Quiz Tintin in America

Answer: Chicago

The year was 1931; Herge even introduces a real life character Al Capone in this book (something he didn't do in later books). Tintin comes to the city to help the cops clean up the city.

24. At the start of the adventure, Tintin is actually a guest at a particular place. In which country was that place located?

From Quiz Tintin and "The Blue Lotus"

Answer: India

Tintin and Snowy were guests of the Maharaja of Gaipajama; having busted a racket of opium dealers, Tintin thought he was going to get a well deserved rest. There were a lot of questions left unanswered.

25. The adventure starts when Tintin and Captain Haddock go to see a movie. Whom do they meet on the way back?

From Quiz Tintin and "The Red Sea Sharks"

Answer: General Alcazar

General Alcazar was the general of San Theodoros till he was ousted in a coup by General Tapioca. While they were returning back from the movie, "The Outlaw", Tintin remarks that the lead actor looks like General Alcazar, whom they bump into at the next corner.

26. What is the name of the last completed Tintin story by Herge?

From Quiz Tintin

Answer: Tintin and the Picaros

Tintin teams up with his old friend General Alcazar in his campaign against opposing General, Tapioca.

27. What is the French name of 'Marlinspike Hall'?

From Quiz 'Tintin' Knowledge

Answer: Moulinsart

'Moulinsart' is the French name of 'Marlinspike Hall'. 'Moulinsart' is also the name of the company that makes 'Tintin' memorabilia. Their headman is Nick Rodwell.

28. Professor Calculus turns up at Tintin's door shortly after the detectives Thomson and Thompson. What does he offer the treasure hunters?

From Quiz Tintin in "Red Rackham's Treasure"

Answer: A submarine

Calculus' visit is due to his concern that Tintin will be vulnerable to shark attacks when diving to find the ship wreck. He offers his one-man submarine as a solution. Unfortunately it breaks in two when Calculus gets into it.

29. In "The Secret Of The Unicorn", what does Tintin purchase, which prompts the search for treasure?

From Quiz Red Rackham's Treasure

Answer: A model ship for Captain Haddock

The Thompsons are patrolling the Old Street Market, trying to catch some notorious pick-pockets (unaware both their wallets have already been lifted!) when they bump into Tintin. Soon after, Tintin spots a model ship he decides to buy for his new friend Captain Haddock. He is surprised when two other men suddenly appear, desperately wanting the ship too. Trying to be polite, Tintin explains it's a for a friend and he's not selling. It turns out later the two men do not know each other, and in fact become rivals (e.g. one chloroforms the other and steals one of his model ships!). But The Captain is astonished when he sees the ship; it turns out his ancestor used to be captain of the real Unicorn!
