Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What drink do the Thompsons buy for Tintin?

Answer: A beer

This came to 45 pence.
2. What nationality is the man who tries to deliver a letter to Tintin, but is kidnapped?

Answer: Japanese

His name was Bunji Kuraki.
3. Which character, previously seen in 'Cigars of the Pharaoh', do we meet again on board the Karaboudjan?

Answer: Allan

Allan is often connected to Rastapopoulos is some way or another, as he was in 'Cigars of the Pharaoh' and later 'The Red Sea Sharks' and 'Flight 714'.
4. What is Tintin offered to eat and drink whilst tied up in the hold of the Karaboudjan?

Answer: Bread and water

This helps Tintin to escape as his hands are freed to allow him to eat.
5. What does Tintin find in the tins of crab?

Answer: Opium

There are crates full of both cans of opium and champagne in a room on board the Karaboudjan which Tintin takes refuge in.
6. What does Captain Haddock do to try and keep Tintin warm whilst on the boat?

Answer: Set the boat alight

Well, it's the thought that counts. This, well, backfires, as one might imagine. When Tintin tries to use a bucket of sea-water to put the fire out the Captain doesn't like this and tries to stop him, culminating in the boat tipping over. This does succeed in sobering the Captain up though.
7. Who or what does Captain Haddock mistake Tintin for whilst under the influence of the desert heat?

Answer: A bottle of Champagne

Desperate for a drink, he attempts to 'uncork' Tintin. Snowy heroically puts a stop to this by whacking the Captain over the head with a dinosaur bone. (Unfortunately, though, he misses at first and hits Tintin).
8. What is the name of the Port where Tintin and Captain Haddock go to try and track down the Karaboudjan?

Answer: Bagghar

This was in Morocco. Kefheir was mentioned earlier in the story, while both Wedesdah and Khemed are visited by Tintin and the Captain in 'The Red Sea Sharks'.
9. Having had too much to drink, Captain Haddock makes something of a scene twice in the space of minutes. Why does he do so the first time?

Answer: He lost his wallet

He did recognise the Karaboudjan just minutes after protesting about the loss of his wallet. He was arrested this second time for making trouble persistently.
10. Why does the car Tintin uses to try and follow the Captain's kidnappers not work?

Answer: It is being towed by a breakdown truck

Therefore, it is moving backwards! Upon discovering this, Tintin hops into a taxi.
11. What does the shopkeeper call Tintin and the Thompsons?

Answer: Sidi

The poor bloke seems rather flustered when Tintin and the two detectives come in, demanding he open the tin and then interrogate him on details about this crab he receives. Very fishy indeed.
12. What building do the Thompsons quite literally get kicked out of?

Answer: A mosque

This is for failing to observe the sign outside asking them to remove their shoes.
13. Details of which Greek philosopher help Tintin work out where Allan has disappeared?

Answer: Diogenes

Diogenes lived in a barrel and the man entered a barrel to meet with Allan and his associates.
14. What exclamation does Omar Ben Salaad, the ringleader of the drug-runners, use when the Thompsons ask him if he is doing so?

Answer: By the beard of the Prophet

He was none too pleased at this near accusation. Funny considering he was actually involved in the drug-running?
15. Why is Captain Haddock taken ill at the end of the story?

Answer: He drinks a glass of water

The poor fellow isn't used to drinking the pure stuff!
