Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of animals are turtles?

Answer: Reptiles

The only reptiles with shells as part of their skeletons are tortoises, turtles, and terrapins. Tortoises usually live on land, while turtles live in the sea, and terrapins live in fresh water.
2. Turtles are ectothermic. What does this mean?

Answer: they are cold-blooded

A turtle's body temperature changes with its environment. "Ecto" comes from the Greek word "outside" and "thermic" comes from the word meaning "warm".
3. Do turtles take care of their babies?

Answer: No

After the baby turtles hatch, they are completely on their own. Many do not survive. There are no known turtle species where the mother takes care of their young.
4. A turtle's shell is divided into two parts. What is the upper shell called?

Answer: Carapace

All turtles have some type of shell which cannot be removed. Turtles that live in water have a soft shell and turtles that live on land have a hard shell. Most, but not all, turtles can pull their head and legs inside of their shell to protect themselves from enemies and bad weather.
5. What is the lower part of the turtle's shell is called?

Answer: Plastron

Turtles have an internal skeleton like other reptiles, but they also have the added protection of their shell. The shell helps to protect their inner organs.
6. Which of these does NOT describe a turtle?

Answer: Mammal

About 300 species of turtles are alive today. Some are highly endangered. Sea turtles of all species are endangered. They used to be hunted for their meat, fat and shells. Coastal people used to gather the turtle eggs to eat.
7. Do turtles have teeth?

Answer: No

Turtles do not have teeth. Instead, they have ridges on their upper and lower jaws to cut and chew their food.
8. Do turtles have tongues?

Answer: Yes

Turtles use their tongues to swallow food. They cannot stick out their tongues to catch food like most other reptiles.
9. Where do turtles lay their eggs?

Answer: All turtles lay their eggs on land.

The mother digs a hole and then lays her eggs and covers them up. They are left to incubate for about 7 to 10 weeks. After they hatch, they dig their way out of the ground and head for water. Most are eaten by predators on the way to the water.
10. In which of these environments might you find turtles and/or tortoises?

Answer: All of these

Turtles can live almost anywhere. However, they cannot survive in Antarctica. It is too cold for them to live there.
