Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Flour, eggs, milk, sugar, baking powder and oil/butter... What breakfast favourite is created when these two pictures are combined?

Answer: Pancake

The picture on the left = pan
The picture on the right = cake

Together they make 'pancake'!

And that's essentially what it is... batter that is fried in a pan to make a flat kind of cake. Pancakes are often eaten along with butter and maple syrup on top, although many other toppings work.
2. Careful, they're pokey! What tropical fruit can you make by putting these two pictures together?

Answer: Pineapple

The picture on the left = pine
The picture on the right = apple

Together they make 'pineapple'!

Pineapples are from South America, originally, but after Europeans came to the New World, this yummy fruit got to go traveling. Now, many tropical countries grow pineapples for the rest of the world to enjoy!
3. They're best in the summer. Put these two photographs together to come up with what kind of creamy treat?

Answer: Milkshake

The picture on the left = milk
The picture on the right = shake

Together they make 'milkshake'!

Milkshakes are made from blended milk and ice cream, along with whatever flavour you want to have! Often, a generous topping of whipped cream completes the treat! My favourite is strawberry-banana!
4. Do you like purple? Also called an aubergine, what do you get when you combine these two pictures?

Answer: Eggplant

The picture on the left = egg
The picture on the right = plant

Together they make 'eggplant'!

The most common type of eggplant is a nice, dark purple in colour. But the name 'eggplant' was given to a variety that are smaller (about the size of goose eggs) and white/yellow in colour. It just made sense.
5. I like them Kentucky fried! What meaty delicacy do you get when these two pictures are put together?

Answer: Drumstick

The picture on the left = drum
The picture on the right = stick

Together they make 'drumstick'!

Chicken and turkey legs (and the legs of most other birds that people eat) are called drumsticks because... you guessed it... they look like the sticks people use to hit drums with.
6. Is it cloudy out? These two photographs combine to make what spaghetti topper?

Answer: Meatball

The picture on the left = meat
The picture on the right = ball

Together they make 'meatball'!

Meatballs are made from ground (minced) meat (commonly beef), typically with egg and some breadcrumbs and onion to hold its shape. I love spaghetti and meatballs! Did you get the reference to that funny animated movie, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" in the question?
7. A Wimbledon favourite! What sweet fruit can you make with these two pictures together?

Answer: Strawberries

The picture on the left = straw
The picture on the right = berries

Together they make 'strawberries'!

Strawberries are bright red, juicy and sweet, as you probably already know. They make a popular jam and are a favourite flavour for milkshakes. And strawberries and cream is the traditional treat of the Wimbledon tennis championships (in London, England).
8. "Not my gumdrop buttons, please!" When you put these two pictures together, what spiced holiday treat do you get?

Answer: Gingerbread

The picture on the left = ginger
The picture on the right = bread

Together they make 'gingerbread'!

Gingerbread can be eaten all year 'round, but gingerbread treats in all forms really start showing up around Christmas time! My favourite gingerbread treats are gingersnaps (gingerbread cookies), especially when they are fresh out of the oven and are still soft and warm.
9. Does this taste funny to you? What dairy-based drink can you make by combining these two photos?

Answer: Buttermilk

The picture on the left = butter
The picture on the right = milk

Together they make 'buttermilk'!

They used to make buttermilk from the liquid left over after churning butter out of cream. Nowadays, though, buttermilk is cultured (made directly as buttermilk, rather than as a byproduct).
10. What's your favourite flavour? What sugary treat do you get when you put these photographs together?

Answer: Jellybeans

The picture on the left = jelly
The picture on the right = beans

Together they make 'jellybeans'!

Jellybeans (also often written as non-compound words 'jelly beans')are not shaped like the string beans in the picture, but rather like kidney beans. They come in as many different flavours as you can think of. My favourite flavours are buttered popcorn and A&W cream soda.
