Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. As a child, I began learning history not from school books, but rather through storytelling about people, times and wars of the past. Which of the wars mentioned below did NOT feature the United States as a combatant?

Answer: Napoleonic Wars

The Napoleonic Wars were fought in Europe, in the first two decades of the 19th century. Napoleon, a French general and statesman, after becoming Emperor of the French, attempted to conquer the rest of Europe, but found opposition from most other European nations.

Despite that, he almost succeeded, but made the mistake of invading Russia when winter was coming. He was finally defeated at Waterloo, in 1815 and was exiled to St. Helena.
2. Often I would look at a globe and try to remember names of countries, mountains and rivers. Of the rivers mentioned below, which is the largest in terms of water volume?

Answer: Amazon River

The Amazon River is located in South America. The river discharges about 209,000 cubic meters of water every second.
The Nile River is longer than the Amazon, but discharges much less water. It is located in Africa.
The Danube River is located in Europe and passes through several European capitals, such as Vienna (capital of Austria) and Budapest (capital of Hungary).
The Mekong River is located in Southeast Asia.
3. When I was young, I would always fond of staying up late and I often praised loudly the person who was credited with inventing the electric light bulb. What is his name?

Answer: Thomas Edison

Thomas Edison was born in 1847. He began his career as a telegraph operator, but ended up as one of the most productive inventors of all time, holding more than one thousand US patents in his name.
Benjamin Franklin was a US Founding Father and an inventor, as well.
Leonardo da Vinci was an inventor, a painter, a sculptor and much more.
Jonas Salk was a doctor and medical researcher, who developed a vaccine against poliomyelitis.
4. As many young children have done, I had, at some point, begun collecting coins and banknotes from many countries of the world, including the US. And I soon noted that a certain individual, while NOT a US President, appeared in many denominations of American dollars. What is his name?

Answer: Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton was born in 1755 or 1757. He is counted among the US Founding Fathers, yet his views in politics differed from other important figures of the era, such as Thomas Jefferson. While they advocated a decentralized Federal government with the individual states having significant rights, Hamilton believed in a strong government.
Throughout the years, he has been depicted in $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $1000 notes, not to mention the countless postage stamps that feature his likeness.
5. A memory I keep with an extreme fondness is when one of my teachers in school asked me to name four books of the New Testament and, after I answered, he gave me a treat. Can you tell me which of the Bible books mentioned below IS in the New Testament?

Answer: The Gospel of John

The Gospel of John is the fourth and last of the Gospels, being placed after the ones of Matthew, Mark and Luke. John- one of Jesus Christ's twelve disciples- wrote it on the island of Patmos, where he was exiled by the Romans.
Some other books of the New Testament include the Book of Revelation and three Epistles.
6. Due to my nationality, I developed an interest in Greek myths from a very young age. And my favorite mythical hero was the one who completed twelve very hard Labors. Who was he?

Answer: Heracles

The reason Heracles had to complete those Labors was the fact that, driven temporarily insane by the goddess Hera (who resented Heracles because he was her husband Zeus' son with the mortal Alcmene), he slew his wife and children. The twelve Labors were: slaying the Nemean Lion, slaying the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra, capturing the Golden Hind of Artemis, capturing the Erymanthian Boar, cleaning the Augean stables in one day, slaying the Stymphalian Birds, capturing the Cretan Bull, stealing the Mares of Diomedes, acquiring the girdle of Hippolyta, Queen of the Amazons, obtaining the cattle of Geryon, seizing the apples of the Hesperides and capturing the three-headed dog Cerberus.
7. As a child, I used to enjoy sports, both as an amateur player and as a spectator. While some sports are played by teams, others require only two players. Which is an example of the latter?

Answer: Tennis

Tennis requires only two players (but can have as many as four players if a doubles match is being played). The venue where it is played is called court. The sport has a long history, beginning possibly in 12th century France, but the modern version of tennis was invented in 19th century Great Britain.
8. Another beloved pastime of mine was board games. I was very fond of the one that looks like a naval battle, where ships are placed in a grid and your opponent has to guess where they are. What is this game called?

Answer: Battleship

In the standard version of the game, each player has five carriers, four battleships, three cruisers, three submarines and two destroyer boats. Each player positions them horizontally or vertically within a 10x10 grid.
Subsequently, each player tries to guess where the opponent has placed their ships. When they are successful, the opponent says "hit!" and when they are not, the opponent says "miss!". When all the squares occupied by a ship have been hit, the ship is pronounced "sunk". The one who first sinks the opponent's ships wins.
9. Although I enjoyed painting during my childhood, I initially had some trouble distinguishing the primary from the secondary colors. So, which of the paint colors below is a primary one?

Answer: Red

For artists, the three primary colors are red, blue and yellow. When they are mixed, they make the secondary colors, green, orange and purple. To be more specific, red and blue make purple, red and yellow make orange, blue and yellow make green.
10. We all had our favorite TV shows when we were kids. In my later childhood, I acquired a fondness for "SpongeBob SquarePants". What is the name of SpongeBob's best friend, who lives under a rock?

Answer: Patrick Star

Patrick Star has been SpongeBob's buddy since the first episode of the series, "Help Wanted". While no-one can doubt their friendship, Patrick's apparent lack of common sense often leads the duo to trouble.
Squidward Tentacles is SpongeBob's nieghbor and co-worker in the Krusty Krab. While SpongeBob considers him a friend, Squidward harbors a disdain for his neighbor and has a very big ego.
Eugene Krabs is SpongeBob's employer and loves his money very much.
Sheldon Plankton is Mr. Krabs' rival who always attempts to steal the secret Krabby Patty formula, only to be thwarted until the next episode.
