Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the hero of this book?

Answer: Martin

Martin is quite a hardy warrior who has relied on himself to survive. He is usually a solitary mouse, but always a champion of good. He finds two lifelong companions in Gonff and Dinny, and never gives up, even when faced by Tsarmina. He forms a lifelong friendship with the ruler of the woodlands, Bella of Brockhall, the badger.
2. Who is the arch-villain of the book?

Answer: Tsarmina

Tsarmina calls upon the vixen Fortunata to poison Verdauga, her father. She then throws her brother Gingivere into the dungeons. When Martin is brought to be judged by Verdauga, Tsarmina wants the mouse dead. She is overruled and, in temper, breaks Martin's sword, for which he threatens to kill her.

She scoffs at that. She is a vicious and powerful general, but has one terror. She cannot stand water, and during her fight with Martin, he drives her backwards into the lake, where she drowns.
3. Gonff often introduces himself to new friends as the "Prince of Mousethieves". However, he always imitates the speech of which woodland friends?

Answer: The otters

Gonff's favourite weapon is the sling, which is also favoured by the otter crew. His parents were killed by the vermin under Verdauga, and he was brought up by the Stickle hedgehogs. He can imitate the speech of any creature and he lives up to his title, often stealing food from Kotir for the woodlanders in hiding.
4. Verdauga's (and later Tsarmina's) castle is called Kotir.

Answer: True

When the castle is drowned in the lake, it is buried by the dirt from the foundations of Redwall. It is rediscovered much later by the good folk of Redwall.
5. What kind of creature is Mask?

Answer: Otter

Mask is Skipper's brother. He lost his tail in a fight a long time ago and since then has learned to disguise himself so well that he can pass as almost any creature. He disguises himself as a fox in order to kill Fortunata and rescue Ferdy, Coggs and Gingivere from Kotir. He pulls the escape off, but is killed when he takes an arrow that Tsarmina meant for Gingivere.
6. Loamhedge is the original home of Abbess Germaine and her followers.

Answer: True

Abbess Germaine's young charge is Columbine, who is extremely sensible for her age. The pretty mousemaid falls in love with Gonff, who returns the feeling. He marries her just after the fall of Kotir. The Abbess herself plays a crucial part in the designing of Redwall Abbey.
7. Who is the Badger Lord Martin and his friends set out to find?

Answer: Boar the Fighter

Boar is Bella's father. When she was old enough to look after the woodlands herself, Boar left to go looking for Salamandastron, the badger mountain. He rules there with his small bunch of hares until Martin comes. With a piece of sky-steel, the badger forges a new sword for the heroic young mouse. Two nights later, Boar falls in battle with Ripfang.
8. Who is the enemy of the Badger Lord and Salamandastron?

Answer: Ripfang

Ripfang also faced Lord Brocktree, when he was much younger, under Ungatt Trunn. The rat now wants Salamandastron for himself and is willing to do anything to get it-especially now that there are only ten hares with Boar to defend the mountain. However, Boar forces the issue by coming out to battle Ripfang.

They die together, Boar crushing the rat to death while buying time for Martin and his friends to escape.
9. Log-a-Log is a shrew whom Martin, Dinny and Gonff find on their quest. He joins them and offers to use his boat to get past the mountains. What is the boat's name?

Answer: Waterwing

The boat capsizes in a cave under the mountains. Log-a-Log, Martin and Dinny are rescued by the bats of Bat Mountpit. Gonff is swept on and found a few days later. Dinny earns the lifelong gratitude of the bats when he collapses an owl's nest and drives it away.
10. Does Martin survive his battle with Tsarmina?

Answer: Yes

The brave mouse fights Tsarmina to the death. She drowns in the lake, but the wounds she inflicts on Martin nearly kill him. Bella makes the greatest run she has ever made, to Gingivere's new home and back, to bring Abbess Germaine to save him. He recovers and wakes up to the news that Gonff and Columbine are married.
