Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Pompeii?

Answer: an Italian city

Pompeii was an Italian city. The Roman volcano god is Vulcan, and the Roman name Vulcano actually is derived from Vulcan's name. More about volcanoes in question two!
2. What destroyed Pompeii?

Answer: A volcanic eruption

Volcanoes are openings in the earth that magma, ash, and gases will come up through. Vesuvius (the volcano near Pompeii) mainly erupted ash.
3. What was the thing that destroyed Pompeii called?

Answer: Mt. Vesuvius

Mt. St Helens is an American volcano. Its eruption in 1980 was one of the largest ever recorded in North America!
Rangitoto is an island in New Zealand. It is in the Hauraki Gulf, and its last eruption was in about 1350 AD.
4. When was Pompeii destroyed?

Answer: 24th August - 79 AD

I originally made up all the wrong answers, but I have done some research on one, and this is what I found out:
In 1169 AD, the first Normans, invited by the King of Leinster - Dermot Mac Murchada - arrived in Southern Ireland. I saw a map on Wikipedia, showing what areas the Normans conquered, and apparently, they conquered the area that Pompeii was in way before the eruption, and possibly before Pompeii even existed!
I couldn't find anything very interesting for 1200 AD.
5. What was the name of another town that was destroyed the same time as Pompeii?

Answer: Herculaneum

Sacajawea was a famous Native American. She helped Lewis and Clark on their journey across the United States.
Halifax is a town in Great Britian. Rome is the capital of Italy.
6. What bay or river is Pompeii next to?

Answer: Bay of Naples

Hudson Bay is a large bay in Canada. The Waikato is a New Zealand river. The Mississippi is a river that runs through America.
7. Who was the only eyewitness of the eruption to write a firsthand account?

Answer: Pliny the Elder

Julius Caesar was a famous Roman Senator. He was born on the 13 July 100 BC, or 102 BC, and he died on the 15 of March in 44 BC. This means that he was around during the same time when Pompeii was thriving(750 BC-79 AD), but not when Vesuvius erupted.
Barney is a popular dinosaur on a children's programme, but does not really have anything to do with history at all.
8. When were Pompeii's ruins discovered?

Answer: 1750 AD

Like I did in question 4, I will choose the most interesting time period of the incorrect answers and write about it.
In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean and in doing so, he also discovered America. In his time America was known as the "New World".
9. How were people who died in Pompeii preserved?

Answer: Being buried in ash that hardened around them.

The ash hardened and the bodies rotted. Later when scientists were digging, they found the hollows and made casts. An interesting thing about Pompeii is that all the people died in different positions. Herculaneum is not as famous, because the ash stayed wet, and they rotted, but left no hollows. The ash did not harden, so all the scientists found were skeletons.
10. Pompeii is still being dug up today, so people cannot visit it.

Answer: False

Pompeii is a UNESCO world heritage site. About 7000 people visit it each day!
