Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beginning with SLOW, change one letter to make a word that describes what falls from the sky in the winter, is very cold, and is fun to play in.

Answer: Snow

SNOW is basically flakes of ice crystals that form in the clouds. Lots and lots of flakes of SNOW means opportunities for sledding, SNOWball fights and building SNOWmen and SNOW forts. I love SNOW!
2. Now change a letter to make a word that describes the stuff that runs from your nose when you have a cold.

Answer: Snot

SNOT is 'nasal mucus', which is a fancy way of saying that it is the gummy, gooey stuff that forms in your nose. Its job is to keep bits of dirt and dust from going up your nose and into your lungs.
3. Another letter change gives a word for something that is small, roundish, and different than what is around it.

Answer: Spot

Apart from the given description, a SPOT can also be a place of importance, or a destination (like 'X marks the SPOT'). It also makes a pretty good name for a pet.
4. Switch a letter to come up with a word that describes the dirty blackness left from the smoke of a fire.

Answer: Soot

SOOT is kind of like ash. Ash is what is left behind after things burn all the way, while SOOT is the stuff that doesn't quite burn all the way, and goes up into the air around and above a fire. All the blackening around a fireplace comes from SOOT.
5. Change one letter to make a word that could describe all the gold and treasure that bad guys steal from other people.

Answer: Loot

LOOT is the stuff you get from LOOTing, or plundering or pillaging or sacking. What was once the spoils of war now usually just refers to the stuff people steal in street riots.
6. Change another letter to get a word describing something that you can't find, or what you are when you don't know where you are.

Answer: Lost

It can be very scary to be LOST. Or to lose something you love (like a pet). Talk to your parents about what you should do if you ever do get LOST.
7. With another letter change, you can make a word that describes a tall pole that is used to make fences and gates.

Answer: Post

A POST doesn't have to be made of wood alone. POSTs can be metal or stone as well. Basically, it is used to provide support for the wires or bars of fences, or the gates at the ends of fences.
8. Change another letter to make a word for everything that happened before the present.

Answer: Past

The PAST, the present and the future are all parts of measuring the passage of time. The present moves with us and is always now. The PAST is already back when you started reading this sentence, and goes all the way back as far as you can imagine.
9. Change one letter to come up with a word that describes what you wear to let a broken arm heal.

Answer: Cast

A CAST is usually made of plaster and is molded to keep an arm (or other part of the body where a bone needs to mend) in its proper position. It keeps the limb safe from further damage until the bones can properly heal.
10. One last little letter change will finally bring you up to speed. What is the opposite of slow?

Answer: Fast

How FAST you can go really depends. FAST for a snail is definitely slower than your slow, and if you use a vehicle, you can go even FASTer.
