Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what U.S. state is Old Faithful located?

Answer: Wyoming

Old Faithful is a geyser that is located in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Named because of the predictable timing of its eruptions, Old Faithful generally erupts every 35-120 minutes, shooting hot, boiling water 44 feet (average) high for anywhere from  1 1/2 to 5 minutes. Did you know that in the late 1800s, army men who were stationed nearby used Old Faithful as a laundry? It didn't work with woolen clothing, but cotton and linen clothes could be placed inside the crater while at rest, and then would be cleaned and ejected during the eruption.
2. In which U.S. state is the Grand Canyon located?

Answer: Arizona

Carved out of the rock by the Colorado River over millions of years, the Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide, and is over a mile (6,093 feet or 1,857 meters) deep. Today it is part of Grand Canyon National Park, as well as other agencies, in Arizona. Scientists have not agreed on an exact age of the canyon; some sources say that its development began 70 million years ago, while others believe the age is closer to 5-6 million years ago. Did you know that Native Americans believe the site is sacred? Some groups of Ancestral Puebloans lived in the area, while peoples from other tribes made holy pilgrimages to the area. Today there are six major Grand Canyon tribes who hold the area sacred.
3. In which U.S. state is Mammoth Cave located?

Answer: Kentucky

Mammoth Cave National Park is located in Kentucky. Since 1972 it has been merged with another system, and is known as the Mammoth-Flint Ridge Cave System. Covered with sandstone (Big Clifty Sandstone) that has kept the cave stable for centuries, the cave system itself has been carved out of limestone.

It is the longest cave system in the world, and currently has over 390 miles of passages; however, new discoveries are made all the time. Did you know that in the early 1900s, the cave system was the cause of the "Kentucky Cave Wars"? The competition between local peoples for the tourist trade was fierce! And no, there are no mammoths in the caves!
4. Monument Valley is located on the border of Arizona and which other U.S. state?

Answer: Utah

Monument Valley, on the border of Arizona and Utah, is part of a geographic region known as the Colorado Plateau. It is believed that the area, now considered a plain, was once covered in sandstone layers. The beautiful rock formations, mostly made of sandstone, were shaped by erosion caused by wind and water, leaving only the remaining mesas and buttes that can be seen. Did you know that Monument Valley was used by early filmmakers, such as John Ford, for the filming of his westerns? Today the area is officially called Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, and is administered by the Navajo Nation.
5. In which U.S. state is the volcano Mauna Loa located?

Answer: Hawaii

Located on the island of Hawaii, many scientists believe that Mauna Loa is the largest subaerial (located on or near the surface of the Earth) volcano in the world! Some think that the volcano has been erupting for 700,000 years! The magma that comes from the volcano is what made the Hawaiian island chain millions of years ago.

It covers an land area of 2,035 square miles (5,271 km2) and has a maximum width of 75 (120 km) miles. Consisting mostly of solid rock, the volcano makes up more than half the surface area of the island of Hawaii! Did you know that ancient native Hawaiians believed that Pele, the goddess of fire, lightning, violence, and volcanoes, lived at the summit of the volcano? From there she commanded the activities of all the volcanoes in the Hawaiian islands.
6. In which U.S. state is Crater Lake located?

Answer: Oregon

Crater Lake, part of Crater Lake National Park, is a caldera lake, which means that it was formed after an eruption of magma from a volcano. Created approximately 7700 years ago, the caldera that filled with water is about 2,148 feet (655 meters) deep. Without a river that flows into or out of it, Crater Lake depends on snowfall and rainfall to replace water as it evaporates.

The deepest lake in the United States, Crater Lake measures 5 x 6 miles across. Did you know that Crater Lake didn't hold any fish until it was stocked from 1888-1941? Fishing (Rainbow Trout and Kokanee Salmon) is allowed on the lake, with no catching limit or requirement of a license; however, only artificial bait can be used.
7. In which U.S. state is an area called the Badlands located?

Answer: South Dakota

Visitors to Badlands National Park have many opportunities to view beautiful rock formations and a wide variety of wildlife that covers approximately 244,000 acres. If a member of your party likes fossils, there is much to see, as it is considered to be one of the world's richest fossil beds.

Many countries have areas known as "Badlands", where the rock and soil has been severely eroded, and there are more similar areas to be seen in the United States in places like Montana and Nebraska. There is a wide variety of formations, such as canyons, buttes, mesas, and more to be seen! Did you know that one of the last Ghost Dances occurred in the Badlands at Stronghold Table in 1890? Native Americans believed the dance would keep them safe from bullets and help push white men out of their territory.
8. Niagara Falls is located on the border of Canada and a U.S. state. The first word of the state is New. What is the second?

Answer: York

There is a series of three waterfalls that form the system called Niagara Falls. while Horseshoe Falls is on the border between the U.S. and Canada, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls are entirely located in the U.S. The falls were created by the Wisconsin Glaciation about 12,000 years ago at the same time the Great Lakes and Niagara River formed.

In fact, the water that creates the falls comes from the Great Lakes. It has been estimated that originally 5.5 billions gallons of water per hour fell over the falls; today the amount is controlled by the U.S. and Canada in order to slow erosion and also create hydroelectric power. Did you know there are people who actually go over the falls in a barrel? The first attempt was made in 1901 by Annie Edson Taylor, who was sixty-three at the time.

The feat took about 20 minutes to complete - and she survived!
9. In which U.S. state is the Everglades located?

Answer: Florida

The Everglades National Park is an area of wetlands that covers 4,000 square miles (10,000 sq km). It is believed that the Everglades were formed approximately 21,000 years ago, when ice levels retreated and water levels rose. In reality, the Everglades is a slow, constantly-moving river that is 60 miles wide and 100 miles long! Believe it or not, that area has become much smaller due to construction and other projects.

Not only does the Everglades provide water for millions of people, it also is the home of a wide variety of plants and animals. Did you know that the Everglades is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles live together? While crocs mostly live in coastal areas, alligators prefer to stay inland.
10. In which U.S. state is Death Valley located?

Answer: California

Death Valley National Park, covering about 3.4 million acres, is one of the hottest places in the world during the height of summer. Temperatures there have been recorded over 110 °F (43 °C); in fact, in 1917 there were 52 days where the temperature was recorded as reaching 120 °F (49 °C)! Although some scientists disagree on the accuracy of the claim, the hottest temperature on earth that was ever recorded, 134 °F (56.7 °C), happened there in 1913. Now that is hot! Did you know that Death Valley is the site of the lowest point in the United States? It is called Badwater Basin, and is located 282 miles below sea level.
