"Wishbone" Part 2 Trivia Quiz

They call this a kids show, but if you ask me, this show is for the whole family. In my opinion, there might not be a better show on TV, past or present.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was the bully on the show?

Answer: Damont

None of these people were pleasant people, but Damont was the worst. He always caused trouble. Some examples of things he did were stealing David's snow machine and using it to ruin both Wanda's garden and David's reputation, starting rumors about other people, and trying to sabotage Joe, Sam and David at a Halloween competition. The kids and the dog often enact revenge upon Damont. Some examples of this include Wishbone yanking Damont's pants down as Sam takes a picture of him, David re-designing his snow machine so it squirts red paint on Damont, and Wishbone locking Damont in a dark room during the Halloween contest.

At the end "Roamin' Nose," Damont reveals to Joe that the reason he had been bad is because his family expected him to be just like his brother, who was the captain of the championship-winning high school basketball team. The weight of these high expectations made Damont miserable, and he took his misery out on other people. Joe offers to spend the summer practicing basketball with Damont so that they'll be ready for high-school tryouts. This likely implies that Joe and Damont have buried the hatchet.

Damont's actor Joe Duffield also plays the role of the artful dodger in the "Oliver Twist" episode. Joe Duffield was a superb actor. The contemporary story in that episode had a one-time character named Zack who was an even worse bully than Damont.
2. In the episode "Rosie Oh! Rosie Oh!" where does Sam begin volunteering?

Answer: The pound

In this episode, Wishbone and Sam fall in love with a dog named Rosie at the pound. Wishbone purposefully uses his paws to get his collar off so he can get taken to the pound to meet Rosie. Sam learns that when dogs stay at the pound too long, the pound kills them. Sam doesn't want that, so she pleads with her father to let her adopt Rosie.

Her father shoots down the idea because no one would be able to take care of the dog while Sam was at her mother's house. However, her father does some good deeds for Sam and the dog. First, her father finds a family who can adopt the dog and convinces them to adopt Rosie.

Then, he convinces Sam to volunteer at the pound, which she does.
3. What subject was David bad at?

Answer: Poetry

Joe was bad at math, as I mentioned in the first quiz. In one episode, the kids' English teacher gave them a homework assignment to write a poem. David did not like the assignment, and told his friends and neighbors that he couldn't do it. To help him out, someone else writes a poem for him and leaves it on his front porch. David recites this poem to the class and tells the class that it's his poem. When the teacher loves the poem so much he offers to get it published, David feels guilty. David confesses to his friends and his teacher that he did not write the poem. He then writes his own poem, reads it for the class, and with the help of Joe and Wishbone, David and the teacher find out the real author of the poem. It turned out Wanda left that poem there on purpose to inspire him. When the teacher tells Wanda that he loves her poem, they start a romantic relationship.

If you answered "History," that's incorrect. When the kids try to decipher something that Wishbone found on Wanda's garden, David was the first to make the correct connection. He connected the object to the Civil War, and that led everybody to discover that it was a medal given to a soldier.

If you answered "Theater," that's incorrect too, because David directs a presentation of "The Tempest," and even though rehearsal was rocky, the final performance was good.

David is good at science too.
4. Who is David's badly behaved younger sister?

Answer: Emily

Emily is a badly-behaved 5-year-old kid. Some things she has done include stealing Wanda's purse, decorating the Talbots' house with toilet paper, and breaking a valuable vase. She's a naughty kid, but what's even worse in my opinion is she never gets punished for things she does. Usually she doesn't get blamed when she does something bad; Wishbone got blamed for Wanda's purse and the toilet paper and David got blamed for the vase.

This is absolutely infuriating: everybody should know that a dog can't decorate a house with toilet paper like that! And, regarding the vase, a good mother would know which of her kids are good and which ones are naughty. To make matters worse, even when Emily comes clean and admits that she did it, she doesn't get punished. That's why she's naughty and David's good, because David gets punished when he does bad stuff and Emily doesn't (their mother was going to punish David when she thought he broke the vase, but didn't punish Emily for it when she admitted that she did it).
5. In the "Joan of Arc" episode, Sam joins what kind of sports team?

Answer: Soccer

When Joe and David's soccer team loses a player right before the championship game, they convince the coach (David's father) to bring in Sam as a replacement. Sam scores the team's only goal, taking the game to a penalty shootout, and then Sam converts the game-winning penalty kick. However, they are later forced to forfeit the game because they give the league and the other team insufficient notice about the roster change, violating league rules. However, the people in charge of the league encouraged Sam to try out for the team next year, saying that things will probably go differently if they do.

Incidentally, Soccer was also the real name of the dog who played Wishbone.
6. The episode "The Canine Cure" was based on the book "The Imaginary Invalid" by Moliere. Who was the imaginary invalid in the "Wishbone" episode?

Answer: Nathaniel

Nathaniel is a boy who thinks he is weak, bad at sports, and allergic to everything. As the series progresses, Joe and Sam discover that Nathaniel isn't actually any of these things and they help Nathaniel discover that for himself. In one episode, Sam helps Nathaniel discover that he is actually a superb hockey goalie.

In another episode, Nathaniel stays at the Talbots' house for a few days. Nathaniel's mom give Joe's mom a list of things Nathaniel is allergic to, along with a list of medications he must take. These lists are INCREDIBLY long lists. Nathaniel says that his mother doesn't actually know if he is allergic to all of these things, she is just being too careful because it's better to be too careful than not careful enough with your kids. Joe's mom agrees with Nathaniel's mom. However, Nathaniel's mom comes over to the Talbots' house bringing even more medication. When Nathaniel's mom discovers that the Talbots have a dog, she says in a scared voice "Oh, you have a dog?" Joe's mom says, "Yes. Do you not like dogs?" Nathaniel's mom, trying to save herself from looking bad in front of Joe's mom, says "No, not at all. It's just that, ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm... Nathaniel is allergic to dogs." This catches Joe, Nathaniel, and Wishbone off-guard, as Nathaniel had been playing with Wishbone all day. However, as soon as he gets this new information, Nathaniel starts sneezing. So Joe's mom lock Wishbone away in a room where he can do no harm to Nathaniel. Joe and Wishbone get upset, because they know that Nathaniel's mom was lying but they can't convince Joe's mom or Nathaniel of that. At the end, Wishbone breaks out of his prison and sleeps with Nathaniel. When Nathaniel finds Wishbone in his bed and also finds that he is not sneezing, he learns that he is not allergic to dogs and he also learns not to trust his mother.

If you're like me, you saw all the episodes of Wishbone as a kid many times, and watching them as an adult brings back so many memories. Except, you didn't watch all the Wishbone episodes as a kid, because you never saw this one. This episode was banned and never actually aired on TV during the series' run. If you watch it on YouTube now, you're basically watching a brand new Wishbone episode to you. That's awesome! Why this episode was banned is unknown. One popular theory is that this episode encouraged kids to rebel against their parents. Another theory is that it encouraged real-life kids to not take medications that they actually needed. It's extremely important to take your medication.
7. What is the name of the school cafeteria worker who steals food from the school cafeteria to donate to a food bank?

Answer: Ellie

In an episode based on the story of Robin Hood, Joe meets a lunch lady named Ellie after school. Ellie tells Joe that she is stealing food from the cafeteria and donating it to the food bank. The cafeteria manager, Mr. Bison, has a rule that all uneaten food must be thrown in the garbage. Ellie does not like the idea of throwing away perfectly good food, so she breaks this rule for a good cause. Unfortunately, Mr. Bison catches Joe and Ellie discussing this. Ellie at first decides to do what Mr. Bison said, but Joe encourages her to do what she originally wanted. One difference is, normally Ellie donates anonymously. This time, Joe volunteered to attach his name to the donation, thinking he was protecting Ellie. Joe's well-meaning idea backfires because Mr. Bison had seen Joe with Ellie. Mr. Bison fires Ellie. Joe, feeling bad about what he had caused to happen, tells all of his schoolmates that Ellie was fired and successfully encourages the kids to boycott the food at the cafeteria until Ellie gets her job back. This makes Mr. Bison mad. However, at the end of the episode, the principal, who had been away the whole time, returns to the school. When the principal learns what has happened, she approves of what Ellie had been doing and re-hires her. The principal also encourages Ellen to be the school's first parent volunteer. Lastly, the principal fires Mr. Bison.

Ellen is Joe's mother, not the cafeteria worker.
8. What is Sam allergic to?

Answer: Coconut

In an episode based on "Ivanhoe", the kids' English teacher has a spelling bee. After the first day, only two players from each team remained standing. On one team, those two players were Sam and David. On the other team, one of the players was Amanda, a selfish girl determined to prove that she is better than Sam at everything. Sam, David and Joe decide to practice spelling at David's house.

When they get tired, they take a break and David offers protein bars as snacks to help them focus. Unfortunately, David doesn't read the list of ingredients until after Sam had already eaten part of it. One of the ingredients is coconut, which Sam is allergic to. Sam then has to stay home to recover from her illness, and loses her chance to put Amanda in her place. David doesn't like it either, because in addition to feeling bad about what he accidentally did to Sam, David is not thrilled about having to take on two people by himself in a spelling bee. David does not think he's nearly as good a speller as Sam is.

However, David does just fine. Not only does he win the spelling bee for his team, he and Joe tell Sam that they told Amanda that Sam taught David everything he knows about spelling. This helps speed up Sam's recovery, and she's fine in the next episode.
9. The final episode of season 1 introduces a dog named Penny. What do we learn about Penny at the end of the episode?

Answer: She can talk

The final episode of season 1 is a clip show. Wanda leaves a dog named Penny, who belonged to a friend from the Arbor Society. The humans leave the house for the day, and Wishbone spends the whole episode sharing some of his favorite stories with Penny.

After seeing a bunch of clips from old episodes, the humans return to pick up Penny. Just before she leaves, Penny thanks Wishbone for sharing all the stories. Wishbone is shocked because he thought he was the only talking dog in the world.
10. Who is Damont's cousin?

Answer: Jimmy

Jimmy is determined to do just about anything to impress the older kids, even if it might get him into trouble. Jimmy's friend, Marcus, also wants to go on adventure and impress the older kids, though he tries to talk Jimmy out of doing stuff that might get him in trouble.

In one episode, he and his friend Marcus go to a forest where there is a swimming hole, hoping to swim with the older kids. Wishbone goes with them, hoping for a chance to save their lives just like a dog that he had just seen on TV.

The older kids do not allow Jimmy and Marcus to swim with them. They try again at Pepper Pete's, where there is a banquet for the middle school basketball team. The owner and Sam's father, Walter Kepler, offers them a job (sort of. Walter doesn't pay the kids, it's just something the kids can do to help out at the banquet).

Their job is to tell any potential customer that the restaurant is closed for a private event. Jimmy, hoping to impress Mr. Kepler, decides to go into the restaurant and bake the pizzas. Marcus urges Jimmy not to do this, but Jimmy doesn't listen in the end just goes along with whatever Jimmy wants.

In the end, they ruin the banquet. Jimmy had to stand on the table to look into the oven. When he saw that the pizzas were burned, he ran off, and because he was standing on the table, he trampled the pizzas that weren't in the oven and damaged the setup even more. Jimmy and Marcus run back to the swimming hole. When Marcus's uncle finds them there, Jimmy runs off, but Marcus stays and listens to what his uncle has to say. Marcus's uncle tells Marcus that he must apologize to everyone and clean up Pepper Pete's.
