Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Compound word. For this school-related question you need to work out the two words required, then add them together and select your answer. 1. The place where you live with your parents or carers. 2. Something that requires effort.

Answer: Homework

Did you get that? Your home is a place where you spend most of your non-school hours, living with your parents or carers, and your brothers and sisters if you have any. Anything that requires a bit of effort to accomplish is work. Together this is homework, school work that you are given to do by your teachers away from school. It's great fun. You can do it at your own pace and learn new things along the way.

Did you know that for many years in the United States, both teachers and parents frowned upon homework? That was because many children had family or farm chores to do around the home after school instead. In 1901, in one state there, they even passed a law banning homework altogether for primary school children! Now, now, no cheering. It was re-introduced during the 1950s because the authorities were worried that American children were falling behind Russian children in school achievement.
2. Another compound word. For this school related question you need to work out the two words required, then add them together and select your answer. 1. A very dark colour. 2. A long thin piece of wood.

Answer: Blackboard

Were you tricked? I bet you weren't. Black is a very dark colour - and a long thin piece of wood is known as a board.

A blackboard is that large piece of slate stuck up on the wall at the front of your classroom. Your teacher usually writes various notes upon this when teaching you anything. I don't know why they're called blackboards though, because, if you look at them closely, many of them are a dark green in colour as well. Don't you just hate it if your teacher's fingernails accidentally scratch the board and make that horrible sound?

Here's a piece of history for you. Blackboards have been used in teaching since the 16th century, but only at that stage to write music notes upon. Over time they began to be used more and more for other teaching subjects as well.
3. Hidden word question. Study the sentence below and see if you can find the hidden five-letter word in it. Teachers use this object a lot. I'll give you a clue. It begins with C - but it's not class. The teacher said to the class, "You will now get some work each. Al Kelly, please sit down and behave yourself so you can write with this."

Answer: Chalk

Here is the word in case you missed it: "Mrs Brown said to her class, "You will now get some work eaCH. AL Kelly, please sit down and behave yourself."

Chalk is used to write upon the blackboard from time to time during lessons. It is easy to wipe off at any time so that new words or sums can be put on the board as the lesson goes along. Chalk is composed of a product known as calcium carbonate, which is a type of limestone. Once, it was even used to make very old houses, a few of which are still standing today in England. Fancy living in a chalk house. It would probably be a bit dusty. Chalk is normally white, but a Scotsman called James Pillans (1778-1864) invented coloured chalk in 1814. He did this by combining ground up white chalk, dye and porridge!
4. Can you work out this analogy question? Here is an example: Cat is to mouse, as dog is to *what*. The answer is bone. Now your turn. Mathematics are to sums as history is to *what"?

Answer: Dates

History is not just all about memorising dates though, is it? That would be very dull and would mean nothing really except that you know a lot of dates. History is about what actually happened at any period, how it happened, when it happened, where it happened, the reasons why it happened, and what was the result afterwards. I remember this by saying "how, when, where, why, what-what".

History is very important for students AND adults to learn. It teaches us interesting events from our past, and, more importantly, it also teaches us the things we can learn from it, so as, perhaps, not to make the same mistakes again OR to guide our future choices. The older you become, the more history will interest you. It's my favourite subject. How, when, where, why, what-what!
5. Here is another analogy for you to work out. Music is to songs, as English is to *what*?

Answer: Poems

Both songs and poems have a certain rhythm and beat to them if you listen carefully, but they're produced by different methods of sound. Singing has very definite rules to follow if you wish to become a very fine singer of classical music and not just screech into a microphone as some singers do.

It's all about stance, muscle control, projection, placement of vowels and so on. Poetry, which is one of the topics you learn in English, is a little like a song that is being spoken instead of sung. It tells as much a story as does a song, and needs to be delivered in a clear and articulate voice, with emotion, and by emphasising different words or phrases. Both art forms allow you to express your creative and emotional side and to entertain your listeners.
6. An anagram for you to work out. Rearrange the letters in the capitalised word in the following sentence, so that the sentence makes sense, and then put in the correct one-word answer below. The boy liked playing soccer with his best FINDER.

Answer: Friend

Friends are very important for you to have. These can either be quite a few or just several close ones, whichever suits you best. Friends you make at school give you support, company, laugh at your jokes, go through classes and sports with you, and sometimes, if you're lucky, will even by there at your wedding when you're an adult. Next to your parents and siblings, friends are the best thing you can have as you grow up.

However, if you enjoy just being by yourself at times, that's OK too.
7. Another anagram for you to work out. Rearrange the letters in the capitalised word in the following sentence, so that the sentence makes sense, and then put in the correct one-word answer below. Children, and some adults too, go to school every day to RENAL something new.

Answer: Learn

Learning is what takes place when we are told something new. This is then explained to us thoroughly by a good teacher. We are then usually given a chance to practise that new skill or word, or memorise a certain fact, until we can remember it comfortably and with ease. Remember, if you're ever unsure of something your teacher is showing you, be sure to put up your hand and ask.
8. Can you work out this little puzzle by solving these three clues? Then put all three solutions together to make one word, and select the correct answer below. 1. A three letter hot drink that many mums have in a cup or mug. 2. The third letter of the alphabet. 3. A third person female pronoun.

Answer: Teacher

Your teacher is the person who shows you new skills and accomplishments at school, and help your practice them until you are comfortable enough to perform them on your own, or even just to remember them easily. These skills can be new subjects at school or at sport and play. Sometimes you will have the one teacher for an entire year, or, at other schools, you could have different teachers for different subjects. Remember, your parents are also teachers too.

They show you different life skills at home and are just as important at instructing as are your school teachers.

The difference is that your parents probably do it with a great big hug.
9. This is an after and before question. Here is an example: What is a word that goes after COLD and before LIGHT. The answer would be DAY, as in cold day and daylight. Now your turn. Select the word that goes sensibly after COLOURED and before SHARPENER.

Answer: Pencil

Coloured pencil and pencil sharpener. Pencils come in all different colours. The ones that you will use most at school in the early days are lead pencils. Filled with black lead, this is very clear to see when written on the white pages of your books. Lead is also easy to erase should you make a mistake and have to correct it. Remember, there's nothing wrong in making a mistake while you're learning any new skill. That's what learning is all about.
10. Finally, another after and before question for you. What is a word that goes sensibly after BASE and before GAMES?

Answer: Ball

Baseball and ball games. Learning and playing sports, whether it be with a nice big bouncy ball or not, is another part of learning new skills as you grow older. It helps you develop and strengthen various muscles in your body. It also gives you a sense of accomplishment, and helps you form friendships with other members of your various teams. Finally, it's just plain fun. And perhaps that's the most important thing of all about sport. Certainly it's nice to win, but try to remember that the most important thing of all is having fun as well.
