Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hedwig
Answer: Snowy Owl
Harry Potter's pet owl, Hedwig, first appeared in "Philosopher's Stone". Harry was given Hedwig by Hagrid (try saying that quickly) for his 11th birthday, and his feathery friend was by Harry's side through several more books in the Harry Potter series. Hedwig never bonded with the Dursleys, who objected to her screeching - although Hedwig only screeched because they never let her out.
2. Crookshanks
Answer: Cat
We first meet Crookshanks, Hermione Granger's pet cat, in "Prisoner of Azkaban". He is a very large ginger cat with an appearance similar to a Persian, and is in fact half kneazle (a catlike creature with large ears, found only in the wizarding world). Crookshanks is a very intelligent cat, and has a special gift that makes him hyper aware of any dishonesty taking place around him, which comes in very handy at times. Crookshanks would often chase Ron's unfortunate pet rat Scabbers.
3. Trevor
Answer: Toad
Neville Longbottom is the owner of Trevor the toad, but not a particularly successful one. He keeps losing sight of Trevor because the toad is forever trying to escape. Trevor was a gift to Neville from his great-uncle on the occasion of Neville first displaying his ability to perform magic.
4. Pigwidgeon
Answer: Scops Owl
Pigwidgeon, another owl in the Harry Potter series, belongs to Ron Weasley. He calls her "Pig" for short. She was given to Ron by Sirius Black after Ron lost his pet brown rat, Scabbers at the end of "Prisoner of Azkaban".
5. Fang
Answer: Dog
Fang was one of the many pets owned by the gentle giant Hagrid, most of which were rather terrifying. These included a giant spider, a dragon, and a three-headed dog, among others. Then there was Fang, a large and alarming boarhound who was actually rather friendly and affectionate. Fang wasn't the most heroic of animals though - in fact, Hagrid called him a coward.
6. Buckbeak
Answer: Hippogriff
Buckbeak was another pet owned by Hagrid. He was a large creature that was half eagle and half horse. Calm and serene for the most part, Buckbeak was at his best when he was treated with respect. He was included in many adventures with Harry and his friends and was still with the group right to the very end of the series, where he was seen fighting desperately on their behalf during the Battle of Hogwarts in "The Deathly Hallows".
7. Errol
Answer: Great Grey Owl
Errol was a very elderly great grey owl who had been in the service of the Weasley family for many years as their personal courier. This poor old fellow was so old, though, that he was usually completely exhausted by his trips, had bother balancing any parcels, and sometimes even passed out from exhaustion. He also had a tendency to fly into windows.
8. Fawkes
Answer: Phoenix
Fawkes, the mythological phoenix, was a pet belonging to the headmaster of Hogwarts, Professor Albus Dumbledore. As with all birds of this nature, Fawkes periodically burst into flames, but then was born once again out of his own ashes. In fact this happened in "Chamber of Secrets", the first time Harry encountered Fawkes, not knowing he was a phoenix. Both Harry and Voldemort possess a very rare feather from Fawkes in their wands.
9. Scabbers
Answer: Rat
Scabbers was an elderly brown rat who Ron Weasley inherited from his elder brother Percy. Ron thought Scabbers was a bit useless, as he was old and slept all the time, though he did once defend Ron by biting Gregory Goyle on the Hogwarts Express in "Philosopher's Stone".
As the series goes on, we find out that there's more to Scabbers than meets the eye, but to say any more would be a spoiler!
10. Nagini
Answer: Snake
We first meet Voldemort's massive snake, Nagini, in "Goblet of Fire". Nagini was around twelve feet long and helped her master with his evil schemes. Voldemort could communicate with her because he was a parseltongue (someone who speaks the language of snakes). Voldemort used Nagini's venom to sustain his failing strength. As with Scabbers, there is more to Nagini than meets the eye.
