Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Many magical creatures and beasts are introduced to Harry Potter and his friends in their Defense Against the Dark Arts or Care of Magical Creatures classes. A lot of different creatures live in the Forbidden Forest.

Most of the mythical creatures in the books have been popular in myths, folklore, and fantasy settings for centuries. Some are exclusive to the "Harry Potter" world, including nifflers and bowtruckles.

A phoenix is a legendary bird that upon death bursts into flames and is then reborn from the ashes. They have healing tears and the ability to carry heavy loads. Albus Dumbledore has a pet phoenix named Fawkes whom Harry meets in "The Chamber of Secrets".

Dragons make many notable appearances in the books, including Norbert (the Norwegian Ridgeback in "The Sorcerer's Stone"), the four dragons in the Triwizard Tournament in "The Goblet of Fire", and the blind dragon in Gringotts from "The Deathly Hallows".

Unicorns are magical creatures that look like a horse with a horn. Harry finds a dead one in the Forbidden Forest in "The Sorcerer's Stone". In "The Goblet of Fire", students learn about unicorns in Care of Magical Creatures. They are gold as foals but turn silver then white as adults.

Fairies are mentioned first in "The Prisoner of Azkaban". They are tiny beings with insect-like wings and are often used as decorations like on Christmas trees.

A basilisk is a giant, venomous serpent hatched from a chicken egg beneath a toad. Meeting its gaze means death. In "The Chamber of Secrets", Slytherin's monster in the chamber was a basilisk.

Centaurs have the body of a horse topped with the torso, arms, and head of a human. These beasts have human intelligence and use Divination to read the stars. There is a herd of centaurs living in the Forbidden Forest, first seen in "The Sorcerer's Stone".

Bowtruckles look similar to walking stick insects and live in trees with wand-quality wood. They are taught in Care of Magical Creatures in "The Order of the Phoenix".

Nifflers are introduced in "The Goblet of Fire" during a Care of Magical Creatures class. These fluffy, long-snouted beasts are attracted to shiny things and can be used to search for treasure.

Hippogriffs, first seen in "Prisoner of Azkaban", are part horse and part eagle. They can be dangerous unless they are treated with respect. In a Care of Magical Creatures class, students learn to bow and receive a bow back before approaching them. They can also be flown on.

Grindylows are shown to students in a Defense Against the Dark Arts class in "Prisoner of Azkaban". These water demons have pale green skin and horns. Some of the fierce creatures live in the Black Lake around Hogwarts.

The Jabberwock and Bandersnatch are creatures that Lewis Carroll created. Both were first mentioned in the poem "Jabberwocky" featured in his 1871 book "Through the Looking-Glass".

A pegasus is a winged horse from Greek mythology. The minotaur is also Greek with the body of a man and the head and tail of a bull. From Norse legends, a kraken is a sea monster that looks like a gigantic squid or octopus.
