Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our first shade of a green is the name of a beautiful gemstone used in both art and everyday objects in prehistoric and historic China, where it was more precious than either gold or silver. What 'imperial gem' is also a popular given name for girls in most English-speaking countries?

Answer: jade

Though we associate the gemstone jade with the color green, it can actually be found in many colors, including blue, pink, and creamy white. Perhaps one of the most well-known uses of jade in China's history is the jade burial suits. These suits were sometimes sewn together with silk or wired together with gold or silver and took years to complete.

Therefore, usually only the wealthiest aristocrats were buried in them.
2. More commonly known as spring green, this color name has been made more popular by Crayola. What shade of green, halfway between cyan and green on the color wheel, should make you think of the birth of the Greek goddess Aphrodite?

Answer: seafoam green

Although some myths indicate two parents and a normal birth for the goddess Aphrodite, the most common story of her creation involves her rising up from the seafoam as a fully-formed adult, floating on a scallop shell. This is depicted in Sandro Botticelli's famous painting "The Birth of Venus".
3. This shade suggests one of the oldest methods of survival and recreation in the world. What color should Elmer Fudd, Van Helsing, and Dean Winchester all bring to mind?

Answer: hunter green

No matter whether the prey is Bugs Bunny, Dracula, or the Yellow-Eyed Demon, all three of these characters are hunters. This color was popularly worn while hunting for sport in the 19th century, though multi-colored camouflage and the precautionary 'hunter's orange' are more in use in modern times.
4. Though you'd have to travel there on a brick road of another color, which city should be your destination if you find yourself stranded in the Land of Oz?

Answer: Emerald City

The Emerald City is, of course, the capital of the strange Land of Oz in L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz". You'll have to find your way there by the yellow brick road just like Dorothy, Toto, and their companions. Emerald is the green-colored variety of the mineral beryl and is the birthstone for the month of May.
5. This color green is one of the most famous symbols of Ireland. Too bad if you're looking for luck; this clover is one leaf short! What shade will you get if you put together a hoax and a genre of music?

Answer: shamrock

Along with beer, potatoes, and leprechauns, shamrocks are popularly associated with Ireland and, particularly, with St. Patrick. On his feast day, you may see plenty of them (or just their color) in Ireland as well as all over the world. Children may relate shamrocks to the 'magically delicious' clovers in their Lucky Charms cereal.
6. Despite being a mix of blue and green, most people think of this color as green. What shade of green is named for the duck who sports the color around his eyes?

Answer: teal

The male Eurasian (or Common) Teal has a beautiful patch of green around his eyes that stands out against the chestnut color of the rest of his head. It does not stand out quite so stunningly during times of non-breeding. Teal has been used as the ribbon color for ovarian cancer awareness as well as sexual violence awareness.
7. Though it might remind you more of a paperback romance novel, this shade of green is both a color and a type of pattern for clothes, usually in the shape of diamonds. Don't let a similarly named DC Comics character fool you with her red and black costume! What amusing shade of green is this?

Answer: harlequin green

Harley Quinn appears in many comics, cartoons, and films as a sidekick to the Joker, wearing a harlequin jester's costume. Harlequin Enterprises is a publishing company famous for its romance novels, and 'harlequin romance' has become a general term for any paperback romance.
8. This tasty color green is something you might slice and put on your salad or perhaps drop into your martini. Add to it a word that means bleak or dreary and you have a color that will perhaps remind you of the military, though the solid-color fighting uniforms have fallen out of favor since the Vietnam War. Can you guess the color?

Answer: olive green

Olive is the name for both a type of tree, native to the Mediterranean region, and its fruit. Olives are usually used in salads or as garnishes after being pickled and sometimes stuffed. Olive drab was the official combat fatigues color for the U.S. Army until multi-colored camouflage uniforms began to be used.

It is still often used for accents and accessories and other countries still employ the color by itself for their uniforms.
9. You might want this kind of green in your tea, with your lamb, or after a dinner rich with garlic and onions. It could also come in handy when you need to manufacture some new metal currency. What color green is the state a coin collector would hope his coins are in?

Answer: mint

Mint green is another variation on spring green that seems to be very popular with young girls as well as around Easter. The herb mint can help with stomach troubles when used in your tea and is used in a jelly often served with lamb chops. Peppermints can freshen your breath after a meal full of not-so-delicate scents.

A mint is a facility where currency is made and is therefore the condition a coin is considered to be in when it hasn't been circulated to the public.
10. And, finally, our last shade of green. Avid "Harry Potter" readers might recognize it as the color of robe Harry wore to the Yule Ball, while vexillologists (flag enthusiasts) might relate it to the background color of Bangladesh's flag. What is this dark green color that is often used for street signs in the US?

Answer: bottle green

Bottle Green also seems to be a popular name for beverage companies, such as soft drink makers and wine traders. Sounds like a good choice to me, since the color is named after the green glass bottles used for wine, beer, soda, and other drinks.
