Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Literature Who wrote "Epitres de l'Amant Vert" (the "Epistles of the Green Lover")?

Answer: Jean Lemaire de Belges

The "Epistles of the Green Lover", written in 1505, is a mock epistle allegedly written by the pet parrot of Margaret of Austria; the first epistle describes the parrot's torments after she abandoned him to go on a political mission. The parrot commits suicide by throwing himself into the jaws of a dog. In the second epistle, the parrot writes to Margaret telling her of the afterlife. Jean Lemaire was born in Wallonia, a french speaking southern region of Belgium, probably in a hamlet named "Belges".
2. Animals: Zoology Which of the following statements is the correct one about the legendary platypus?

Answer: The platypus was hunted for its fur until the turrn of the 20th Century

Yes, its fur was much sought after; but it is now a protected species. The platypus doesn't hate water, on the contrary it is an aquatic mammal. The male is larger than the female (not the other way round). It is native of Tasmania and all along the eastern coast (from the south eastern to the north eastern coast.
3. World: Military Matters Glock 17, Sig Sauer P226, Walther P99 and Beretta 92FS are all______.

Answer: 9mm Semi-automatic Pistols (Handguns)

9mm or 9x19 mm Parabellum cartridge is what goes into all of these four handguns.
The Glock 17 is Austrian made, the Sig Sauer P226 and the Walther P99 are developed in Germany. The Beretta 92FS is Italian and was adopted by the United States Armed Forces in 1985.
A shotgun is a rifle that fires pellets (or slugs) and is fun to use when shooting clay pigeons, but it is also used by soldiers, Special Ops and Law Enforcement; the Remington 870 is one example of a shotgun.
Many assault rifles, like the M-16, fire 5.56×45mm NATO cartridges.
A howitzer is a piece of artillery (a big cannon) which can be fixed, towed or self-propelled on a tracked vehicle.
4. Religion What was the name given by the Ancient Egyptians to the "fundamental order of the universe"?

Answer: Maat

Maat (or Ma'at) primarily refers to stability surrounded by chaos. Ma'at is also the goddess of truth and justice, she who sets the order of the universe. Duat is the realm of the god Osiris and the after-life. Maata (Näkyvissä Festival) is the biggest Christian music event that takes place in Turku, Finland. "Daata" is the title of a 1989 Indian movie.
5. General Knowledge What is a "Dutar"?

Answer: An Iranian long-necked two-stringed lute

Dutar (or dotar) in Persian; it is an instrument also found in other parts of Central Asia. The oven would typically be a tandoor.
6. Music Who sung "Con te partiro" in a memorable duet with Sarah Brightman?

Answer: Andrea Bocelli

Andrea is a famous Italian tenor, Sarah is an English soprano. "Time to Say Goodbye" (in Italian "Con te partiro") was an enormous world hit, particularly in Germany where the duet version remained top for 14 weeks.
7. Sci/Tech: Math In a right triangle, if I divide the length of the opposite side (a) to an angle A by the hypotenuse (h), what do I get?

Answer: Sine

For that angle A, the sine function (Sin A) is the ratio of the length of (a) to the length of (h). The cosine (Cos A) is the ratio of the adjacent side (b) to (h), that is b divided by h. The tangent (Tan A) is given by dividing (a) by (b) and the secant (Sec A) by dividing (h) by (b). Not easy to remember what goes where.
8. Hobbies: Food & Drink "Egri Bikavér" is a very nice red wine. Where is it produced?

Answer: Hungary

It comes from the Eger region in northern Hungary, hence its name. It is a blend of thirteen different grapes and Hungary's most famous wine. Greece produces the "Retsina". Slovak wines are known locally, but not internationally. In Romania you would find the "Fetească neagră".
9. World: Auto World Which car is made by Toyota?

Answer: Yaris

The Yaris first generation came out in 1999 and was marketed until 2005. It is a compact car which doesn't use much gas and comes in three variants: hatchback, coupe, and sedan. The second generation followed from 2005 until 2011. Several improvements were made, without altering the robustness of the earlier model. A friend of mine bought a Yaris in 2004; 10 years later it is fully reliable and drives like a charm.
The other three cars are Ford models.
10. Movies Based on Trevanian's best seller, the main protagonist of this movie is an assassin forced out of retirement to hunt a deadly double agent who murdered a close friend. What is the title of that movie?

Answer: The Eiger Sanction

Trevanian is the pen name of Rodney William Whitaker deceased in 2005. He wrote several books among which "The Eiger Sanction" in 1972 which was then made into a thriller movie starring Clint Eastwood (as the retired assassin named Hemlock). In order to find out who the culprit is, Clint has to scale the Eiger, the most treacherous peak in the Swiss Alps.

A classic which I highly recommend!
