Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Both King Henry VIII and Al Capone suffered from which devastating disease?

Answer: General paresis

General paresis, also known as general paralysis, is the final stage of syphilis. An infection of the brain or spinal column, it results in dementia, progressive muscular weakness, and paralysis. None of the other ailments use the term "General".
2. When he was President of General Motors, Charles E. Wilson said, "What's good for General Motors is good for the country".

Answer: False

President Eisenhower nominated Wilson to be Secretary of Defense. In the closed Senate Hearings in January 1953, Wilson was asked if, given his investments in General Motors, he could make a decision as Secretary that would hurt GM. The often cited quote, published as a result of a statement by a Senator to a reporter, was not accurate.

His actual statement was: "I cannot conceive of one, because for years I thought what was good for our country was good for General Motors and vice versa. The difference did not exist".
3. The largest single stem tree in the US is named after General Ulysses S. Grant.

Answer: False

The General Grant Tree in Kings Canyon National Park, often referred to as "the nation's Christmas tree", is the second largest single stem tree. The largest is The General Sherman in Sequoia National Park.
4. Which film that had a great cast, including Danny Kaye, Walter Slezak, Barbara Bates, Elsa Lanchester, Gene Lockhart, and Alan Hale, was based on a play by a Russian author?

Answer: The Inspector General

This 1949 movie, a triumph for the talented Danny Kaye, was loosely based on the drama "The Inspector General" (1836/revised 1852) by Nikolai Gogol. The film was directed by Henry Koster. If you have never seen it, you should. "The General" is a 1998 film.

In the USA, the Inspector General of the Army is "the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of the Army across the spectrum of operations" (Department of the Army Inspector General website). General Quarters is the US Navy order when a ship is faced with combat or danger.
5. "General Hospital", one of the longest-running soap operas on American television, celebrated its 50th Anniversary in which season? (Headlines for those years included "Obama Reelected" and "Nelson Mandela dies at 95".)

Answer: 2012/13

"General Hospital" celebrated its 50th anniversary on April 1, 2013. Obama was reelected in 2012 and Mandela died in 2013.
6. When a USA naval warship is faced with combat or imminent danger, what ship-wide order is given? (Flip a coin and you have a fifty-fifty chance.)

Answer: General Quarters

General Quarters (or Battle Stations) requires all personnel (on duty or off, awake or asleep) to go to their assigned positions to defend or attack as the case may be.
7. Which of these Generals conquered the most lands and people, and never lost a battle?

Answer: Alexander the Great

Although all of the others were excellent generals and subjugated many areas and peoples, none compare with Alexander the Great. He took the throne of Macedonia in 356 BCE; he died in 323 BCE at the age of 32. Had he lived, he might well have brought into his kingdom all of North Africa and Europe.
8. Which Gilbert and Sullivan operetta includes the song "I Am The Very Model Of The Modern Major-General"? (Think "Jolly Roger".)

Answer: The Pirates of Penzance

This piece is sung by Major-General Stanley. It is a delightful parody of what an educated British army office was supposed to be near the end of the 19th century. It is generally considered the most famous of Gilbert and Sullivan songs. "The Pirates of Penzance" dates from 1879. "The Jolly Roger", or "Skull and Cross Bones", was the legendary flag flown from pirate ships.
9. The corporation that became General Electric was initially founded by which person? (You need a bright idea.)

Answer: Thomas Edison

The Edison General Electric Company, which included several other Edison companies, was incorporated in 1889. In 1892, it merged with Thompson-Electric Company and became General Electric. In 1896, it was one of the original twelve companies listed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and the only one to remain there into the twenty-first century.
10. Which American General was known as "Old Blood and Guts"? (George C. Scott may know.)

Answer: George S. Patton

Pershing was "Black Jack". Scott was "Old Fuss and Feathers". And Donovan, a Medal of Honor winner, was "Wild Bill". (George C. Scott played Patton in the film "Patton" and won a Best Actor Oscar, which he turned down.)
