Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang "Rocky Mountain High"?

Answer: John Denver

In 1973, John Denver's "Rocky Mountain High" peaked at Number One on the Billboard Top pop 40 chart. Denver was flying high piloting a plane when he lost his life in a crash in 1997.
2. "The Highwayman" was written by which poet?

Answer: Alfred Noyes

"The Highwayman" was first published in "Blackwood's Magazine" in August, 1906. In it the highwayman (who is never named) and Bess, daughter of an innkeeper, are deeply in love. Out of jealousy, Tim, the stableman at the inn, tells the authorities where to ambush the highwayman. But the highwayman escapes capture because he was warned by Bess, who is herself killed. Attempting to avenge her death, the highway man is shot down on the road. The poem ends with the two lovers united again as ghosts.
3. In which art form did Rosella Hightower excel?

Answer: Ballet

Rosella Hightower (1920-2008) was an American ballerina whose initial break came when she was accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1937 where she was guided by Leonide Massine, choreographer and dancer. As World War II began, she and her troupe went to the United states, and she became an international sensation until she retired as a dancer in 1962.

She later directed several prestigious ballet companies, including Marseilles Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, and La Scala Ballet, from which she retired in 1986.
4. Which song by The Highwaymen was a Number One hit on the Billboard Top Pop 40 in 1961?

Answer: Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)

The Highwaymen (Dave Fisher, Bob Burnett, Chan Daniels, Steve Trott, and Steve Butts) were a folk group whose popularity peaked in 1961 with "Michael." That same year, "Cotton Fields" charted at Number 13 on Billboard's Top Pop 40. "Michael" was, surprisingly, the B side of "Santiano."
5. Which artist sang the theme song in the 1952 film "High Noon"?

Answer: Tex Ritter

Tex Ritter's version was a very big country hit. Frankie Laine's rendition reached Number Five on Billboard's Top Hits for 1952. Neither of the other singers recorded the song, as far as I've been able to find. If you have never seen the movie "High Noon," you should!
6. Which of the following is an international organization for individuals of exceptionally high intelligence?

Answer: Mensa

Mensa was founded at Lincoln College, England, in 1946. The only qualification to become a member is to demonstrate on an approved intelligence test that you have a high IQ, usually scoring in the 98th percentile. For most IQ tests, the mean score is 100 with a deviation of 15. On such exams, a 98th percentile score is 130. (On the Stanford-Binet test, a score of 132 or above is accepted).
7. Which "high" term is usually associated with sports?

Answer: High five

A "high five" is a congratulatory move where two players slap hands together over their heads. A "highbrow" is a snob. "High as a kite" means inebriated. "Hightail it" means to scram as fast as possible.
8. The song "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" is from which motion picture?

Answer: Lili

"Lili," the story of a naive girl's relationship with a puppeteer, starred Leslie Caron and Mel Ferrer. The 1953 music score, composed by Bronislaw Kaper, received the Academy Award for Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture. "Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo" has been recorded by Caron and Ferrer, Dinah Shore, Perry Como, The Everly Brothers, The Four Seasons, Nat "King" Cole, and Johnny Mathis, among many others.
9. In 1937's "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," the dwarfs sing "Heigh-Ho" as they go off to the mine. Which longtime Disney lyricist and screen writer collaborated with Frank Churchill to write the song?

Answer: Larry Morey

Larry Morey and Frank Churchill wrote eight of the songs in "Snow White," including "Some Day My Prince Will Come," "Whistle While You Work," and "I'm Wishing." Morey and Perce Pearce wrote the screenplay for "Bambi," and Morley and Churchill collaborated on the score.
10. In which of the following expressions is the term "high" not appropriate: "_____ dudgeon," "_____jinks," "_____down," "_____roller"?

Answer: down

"High dudgeon" means "irate." "High jinks" refers to pranks. A "high roller" is a gambler. The "lowdown" refers to information ("Give me the lowdown.")
