"The Highwayman" was first published in "Blackwood's Magazine" in August, 1906. In it the highwayman (who is never named) and Bess, daughter of an innkeeper, are deeply in love. Out of jealousy, Tim, the stableman at the inn, tells the authorities where to ambush the highwayman. But the highwayman escapes capture because he was warned by Bess, who is herself killed. Attempting to avenge her death, the highway man is shot down on the road. The poem ends with the two lovers united again as ghosts.

Rosella Hightower (1920-2008) was an American ballerina whose initial break came when she was accepted into the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1937 where she was guided by Leonide Massine, choreographer and dancer. As World War II began, she and her troupe went to the United states, and she became an international sensation until she retired as a dancer in 1962.

She later directed several prestigious ballet companies, including Marseilles Ballet, Paris Opera Ballet, and La Scala Ballet, from which she retired in 1986.

The Highwaymen (Dave Fisher, Bob Burnett, Chan Daniels, Steve Trott, and Steve Butts) were a folk group whose popularity peaked in 1961 with "Michael." That same year, "Cotton Fields" charted at Number 13 on Billboard's Top Pop 40. "Michael" was, surprisingly, the B side of "Santiano."

Tex Ritter's version was a very big country hit. Frankie Laine's rendition reached Number Five on Billboard's Top Hits for 1952. Neither of the other singers recorded the song, as far as I've been able to find. If you have never seen the movie "High Noon," you should!

Mensa was founded at Lincoln College, England, in 1946. The only qualification to become a member is to demonstrate on an approved intelligence test that you have a high IQ, usually scoring in the 98th percentile. For most IQ tests, the mean score is 100 with a deviation of 15. On such exams, a 98th percentile score is 130. (On the Stanford-Binet test, a score of 132 or above is accepted).
