A General Warm Up Trivia Quiz

This is my first attempt at compiling a quiz on this site (or anywhere on the net, for that matter). It's a tweaked version of a round from one that I did for a news trade charity function in London in November 2000.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of creature is a cachalot?

Answer: Sperm whale

2. What is the main ingredient particular to a dish when it is described as 'florentine'?

Answer: Spinach

3. Which sport was banned by an Act of the Scottish Parliament in 1457?

Answer: Golf

Some people might argue that it should never have been made legal.
4. What is the surname of the recording artist known as Prince?

Answer: Nelson

Rogers is his middle name, Ciccone is Madonna's surname, and Morrison was John Wayne's original surname. Prince is now known as Prince again after resolving his differences with his old record label. (I think - feel free to disagree.)
5. Which gladiator led a revolt of slaves near Naples in 73 BC?

Answer: Spartacus

Circus Douglas is a Latinised spelling of the guy who played the correct answer in the movie, and Maximus is the name of the character played by Russell Crowe in the movie 'Gladiator' (which is very good). Marcus is a fairly common Roman name that I bunged in to pad out the options.
6. Which metal is an alloy made from copper and zinc?

Answer: Brass

Bronze is copper and tin (either way it ain't zinc). Pewter is lead and tin, and steel is iron and carbon, with any number of other things to make it harder, more malleable, etc.
7. In 1992, who wrote the book 'Diana - Her True Story' about the late princess?

Answer: Andrew Morton

Andrew Motion is a poet, the current Poet Laureate - for US readers, this means he is the official poet to the Queen. Peter Mackay is a Scottish journalist and columnist, and Jenni Murray is the BBC's Court Correspondent.
8. Which fictional character famously drinks their vodka martinis 'shaken not stirred'?

Answer: James Bond

If you got this wrong, maybe you should get out more.
9. Which liqueur is named after the largest island in the Dutch Antilles?

Answer: Curacao

Curacao comes in different colours, mostly green or blue. Advocaat is an eggnog type thing from the Netherlands. Grand Marnier is an orange-flavour thing, and creme de cassis is made from black-currants. All of them are very sweet girly things only fit for cocktails and alcoholics.
10. Which fictional character had a horse called 'Toronado' (sometimes Tornado)?

Answer: Zorro

Not too hard, I trust. Thanks for visiting my quiz I hope you enjoyed it.
