Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hobbies (Food & Drink): In 2005, which New York restaurant celebrated its golden anniversary with the Golden Opulence Sundae, a $1000 ice cream sundae topped with edible gold leaf?

Answer: Serendipity 3

The Golden Opulence Sundae got into the Guinness Book of Records in 2007 as the World's Most Expensive Dessert. The ice cream used in the sundae was vanilla made with Tahitian vanilla beans, and drizzled over it was chocolate sauce made from Amadei Porcelana, a type of dark chocolate from Italy.

As well as the gold leaf, the sundae was also topped off with truffles, candied fruits from Paris, marzipan cherries, almond dragées, and chunks of Venezuelan Chuao chocolate. The sundae itself was served in a gem-encrusted goblet, to be eaten with a gold spoon, and came with a tiny dish of sweetened American Golden caviar. Any customer who fancied one would have to order it in advance, however, as it took two days to prepare, due to having to fly the ingredients in.
2. Movies: Which actor, also known for his role in 'The Matrix', provided the voice of the Silver Surfer in 'The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer'?

Answer: Laurence Fishburne

'The Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer' was released in 2007 and is the sequel to 'The Fantastic Four'. The Fantastic Four are Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd), The Thing (Michael Chiklis), Invisible Woman (Jessica Alba) and the Human Torch (Chris Evans).

Although the Silver Surfer is antagonistic towards them at first, attacking the Human Torch and causing chaos around the world, he later teams up with them to save the planet from Galactus, an evil cosmic entity. Doug Jones physically played the Silver Surfer, while Lawrence Fishburne did the voice work. Fantastic Four creator Stan Lee has a cameo as himself.
3. History (African History): In what year did the Gold Coast gain independence from the United Kingdom?

Answer: 1957

The Gold Coast was a historic region in western Africa, so called because of its natural resources. It was first colonised by the Portuguese in the 15th century; in the 16th century, the Netherlands also established colonies there, and by the 19th century, gold traders from Britain, Sweden, Denmark and Prussia had also established colonies in the region.

After the Second World War, the United Gold Coast Convention party was founded by JP Danquah, and called for independence from the British. In 1957, the Gold Coast region became the Republic of Ghana, and was the first African nation to become independent. Dr Kwame Nkrumah was the nascent state's first prime minister.
4. For Children (Books for Kids): Which children's book by Ian Serraillier, also known as 'Escape from Warsaw', tells the story of three Polish children searching for their parents?

Answer: The Silver Sword

'The Silver Sword' is set in Poland during World War II and tells the story of the Balicki family. Joseph Balicki is a teacher who is arrested by the Gestapo. When the Gestapo come for his wife, his three children, Ruth, Edek and Bronia, are forced to flee their home and go into hiding.

They travel across Europe in the hope of finding their parents, with the help of Jan, a teenage pickpocket who helped Joseph get to Germany. The family are eventually reunited in Switzerland. The 'silver sword', incidentally, is a knife that used to belong to Mrs. Balicki, which Jan steals from the ruins of the Balicki family home.
5. Music: Which Britpop band, whose singles also included 'Chasing Rainbows' and 'Disco Down', sang 'Going for Gold'?

Answer: Shed Seven

Shed Seven were from York and consisted of singer Rick Witter, guitarist Paul Banks, bassist Tom Gladwin, and drummer Alan Leach. They took their name from a shed at York railway station. 'Going for Gold' reached Number 8 in the British charts in 1996, and was the band's highest charting single; a compilation album of the same name was released in 1999.

The band split in 2003, but reunited in 2007.
6. Science (Chemistry): The element of silver has an atomic number of 47. In which group of the periodic table would you find it?

Answer: Transition metals

The transition metals also include gold, mercury, titanium, copper and iron. They have high melting points (with the exception of mercury), are less reactive to air and water than alkali metals such as potassium or rubidium, and are hard and dense, though they can be hammered into shape. Silver is an excellent electrical conductor, and as well as in jewellery and coins, it has also been used in x-rays, disinfectants and photographic film.
7. Video Games: In which Japanese video game by 07th Expansion would you find Beatrice the Golden Witch, golden butterflies, and a troubled family fighting over a large amount of gold?

Answer: Umineko: When They Cry

'Umineko: When They Cry' tells the story of the Ushiromiya family, and a mysterious massacre that took place on the fictional island of Rokkenjima in November of 1986, which only two members of the family survived. At the beginning of the game, Kinzo, the head of the family, has died and left ten tons of gold, in which all four of his children have an interest, as they all desperately need the money. They receive letters purporting to be from the witch Beatrice, claiming that if they do not solve a cryptic epitaph Kinzo left for them, she will collect the gold with their lives as interest - and one by one, the family members and servants are killed in various gruesome ways.

Battler Ushiromiya is the son of Kinzo's third child, Rudolf, and most of 'Umineko' is from his point of view. Playing against Beatrice, Battler must try and solve the mysteries behind the murders, and prove that they were carried out by human means and not by magic. Some sections of the story take place in 1998 and feature Ange Ushiromiya, Battler's younger sister, who was not present on the island when the massacre happened and also wants to uncover the truth, with the aid of the evil witch Bernkastel. 'Umineko' has eight chapters in total, each in turn revealing more about the dynamics between the Ushiromiya children and grandchildren, and the family servants, and the story behind Beatrice's origins.
8. Sport (Olympic Games): At the 2012 Summer Olympics, Great Britain won 17 silver medals. Which of these British athletes was NOT awarded a silver medal?

Answer: Rebecca Adlington (swimming)

Rebecca Adlington was awarded a bronze medal. The Great Britain team won 65 medals in total: 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze. Among the British gold medal winners were Nicola Adams, who became the first female Olympic boxing gold medallist after women's boxing was introduced in 2012, Mo Farah (athletics), Jessica Ennis (heptathlon), and Bradley Wiggins (cycling).
9. People (Quotes): "I stuffed their mouths with gold" is a quote from which Welsh Labour politician, considered to be the father of the National Health Service?

Answer: Aneurin Bevan

Aneurin Bevan, who was Minister for Health in Clement Attlee's Labour government was referring to senior health consultants from the British Medical Association, whose backing he managed to get by promising them bonuses and allowing them to carry on doing private work.

The National Health Service was officially launched on 5th July 1948. However, Bevan resigned from his post as Minister of Labour in protest three years later, when the Chancellor of the Exchequer suggested a prescription charge of one shilling be introduced, as a means of covering costs incurred by the Korean War. Labour lost the election that year, with Winston Churchill replacing Attlee as Prime Minister.
10. Animals (Wild Mammals): Silver foxes are an entirely different species from red foxes, with a Latin name of 'vulpes argentus'.

Answer: False

It might seem like silver foxes are a different species, but they're not! They're actually red foxes whose silver fur is a mutation. Some silver foxes have very dark, almost black fur, while others are grey or silvery-white ('platinum'). Silver foxes can be found all over the northern hemisphere, and in some countries such as Russia, are bred in captivity for their pelts.
