Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In HTML coding, the six values for colour can range from 0 (zero) to F (15). The mix of all colours at their fullest, FFFFFF, is how you get white. What, therefore, would be the value for black?

Answer: 000000

In HTML, colours can be defined with a hexadecimal system that blends the three primary additive colours, red, green, and blue. Using a six-value system, all colours of a 24-bit colouring system can be achieved. That's 16,777,216 different colours with just six characters!

The first two values are the red values, the next two are for green, and the final two are for blue. The mixture of all three colours at their fullest will give you white, therefore FFFFFF is that value. The absence of all colours will, then, give you black, and that value is 000000.
2. The first nuclear weapons testing by the United States was conducted in New Mexico. When World War II ended, some of the testing moved to the South Pacific. However, in the 1950s, testing moved back to the mainland. In which US state did the United States gamble their nuclear weapons in the 1950s, on the live fire range of Nellis Air Force Base?

Answer: Nevada

Nellis Air Force Base is located in southern Nevada, and their live fire range extends into neighbouring Utah and New Mexico as well. However, when the United States wanted to move their nuclear testing from the South Pacific back to the mainland United States, President Harry Truman allocated the southern tip of Nevada as the area where the nuclear bombs could be detonated safely. With not much human habitats in the area, it seemed like a logical choice.

Around 3,500 square kilometers (1360 square miles) of desert and mountainous regions were allocated for this project. The explosions could be seen from Las Vegas, and the earthquakes they caused could be felt as well. The fallout was later discovered to have increased instances of thyroid cancer, as the primary study showed, as well as other forms of cancer in subsequent studies. Many tests were carried out at atmosphere, and many more were conducted underground.
3. If mellifluous means 'sweet and melodic sounding', interfluous means 'merging together smoothly, and circumfluous means 'surrounded by or as if by water', what does the ending '-fluous' mean?

Answer: to flow

The ending '-fluous' comes from the Latin word 'fluere' which means 'to flow'. Many words in the English language borrow parts (or all of them) from Latin, one of the main languages as the English language was forming up and shaping itself. Several words end with '-fluous', like mellifluous, interfluous, circumfluous, effluous, lactifluous, and more.

It also appears in the middle and beginning of words like fluctuate, influence, and fluent.
4. In the world of quantum mechanics, Erwin Schrödinger's name invariably comes up. The Schrödinger equation talks about every single particle being also... what?

Answer: A wave

Erwin Schrödinger was an Austrian physicist who took Louis de Broglie's doctoral thesis paper and came to the conclusion that every particle can also be described as a quantum-mechanical wave. When de Broglie first postulated that the electron also behaves as a wave in quantum mechanics, Schrödinger studied that paper while on vacation and came back with the realization that every particle is also a standing wave function, essentially.

His equation, which was published in 1926, is a series of linear PDEs (partial differential equations) that can predict what behaviour a system will take over time, accounting for uncertainties that occur at the quantum level.

This paper got Schrödinger the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1933.
5. Clefairy, a Pokémon, uses an attack called 'metronome' which 'tweaks its brain into using attacks it doesn't know'. What is a metronome in real life?

Answer: A music timer

Using the basic concept of a pendulum, the metronome is (or at least, was originally) a mechanical device which produces clicks at regular intervals. This is used by musicians to keep to a certain tempo since the metronome time can be adjusted. It consists of a long stick upon which there is an adjustable mass. The location of the mass on the stick will change the interval at which the metronome clicks. Once the mass has been set and locked, the user will push the stick and it will oscillate back and forth producing a click at set intervals.

Clefairy is a Fairy-type Pokémon (previously a normal-type) who can use the metronome attack. It will copy another Pokémon's move and use it against them, since Clefairy is normally pretty cowardly.
6. In Shakespeare's "As You Like It", Touchstone the jester offers commentary on the other characters so that the audience has insight into them. In whose court, reminiscent of a great King of Prussia, is Touchstone?

Answer: Duke Frederick

"As You Like It" is a Shakespearean play written, most likely, in 1599. A comedy whose first stage date is disputed, it has often been very polarizing in how people perceive its quality. Nevertheless, "As You Like It" is performed nowadays, and movie, musical, and radio adaptations have all been published and performed.

The play takes place in the Forest of Arden where the heroine, Rosalind, is fleeing her wicked uncle who has just usurped her father from the duchy. She has fled with the uncle's daughter, Celia, who also happens to be Rosalind's best friend, and the jester, Touchstone. Different love pairings are revealed as the two ladies meet the exiled Duke's men in the forest, and it ends well. The play is also famous for several speeches, including "All the world's a stage" (spoken by Jaques).
7. While the first blood bank in the United States was opened in Chicago in 1937, five years prior to that Sergei Yudin opened a storage facility for blood at the Nikolay Sklifosovsky Institute. It was then expanded to a hospital, where transfusions would be made. Where is it accepted that the world's first blood bank was opened?

Answer: Leningrad, USSR

Blood transfusions had been attempted for years with varying degrees of success. Only when the ABO system of blood types was discovered was it safer to transfuse blood. Finally, when an anti-clotting agent was found that could work with blood and was not toxic to the body, then blood could be stored for later use.

In 1930, blood pioneer Sergei Yudin opened a facility to store blood at the Nikolay Sklifosovsky Institute of Moscow, and in 1932, the Leningrad Hospital opened what is now accepted as the first active blood bank in the world.
8. Aeschylus, the ancient Greek playwright, wrote such plays as "Seven Against Thebes", the "Oresteia" trilogy, and "Prometheus Bound" (probably). Because of these, and more, he is known as 'the father of ______'.

Answer: Tragedy

Aeschylus was an ancient Greek playwright who lived in the 6th and 5th century BCE. He probably wrote around 70 to 90 plays, but only seven survived to the modern day while the authorship of one of them is disputed. His "Orestia" is the first example of a play to be presented as a trilogy (that has survived).

He is often called the 'father of tragedy' because of the themes that he portrays in his work. "The Persians" for example, is a play that Aeschylus wrote from his life experiences as a soldier fighting against the forces of Persia. In it, he describes the sin of pride, or hubris, that leads to the downfall of the Persian army. The "Orestia" trilogy tells of the violent fates of Agamemnon and his family. All told, Aeschylus was a skilled storyteller and a master of the Greek tragedy.
9. 'Tribbles' are a fictional creature that featured on a television series that included Klingons, the USS Enterprise, and a guy called Spock. What television show tackled the problem of exponential growth when they took on the tribbles?

Answer: Star Trek

On the television show "Star Trek" (the original series) the crew of the starship USS Enterprise take on a tribble, a furry life form that is pleasant when around humans. However, unbeknownst to the crew, these tribbles multiply exponentially; in fact, each tribble can produce ten offspring every twelve hours. This means that after three days, there are more than 1.7 million tribbles on board the ship. All of these tribbles have to eat something, and they're eating a grain shipment that the Enterprise was supposed to be guarding. However, most of the tribbles are dead or dying because the grain was poisoned by a Klingon spy, a hostile alien species. The captain of the ship, James Kirk, finds a solution in the end.

"Star Trek" was not a huge hit when it was originally aired, but it gained a huge cult following. Subsequent spin-offs, movies, and other media made the franchise even more popular. Exponentially so?
10. The industrial metal group Rammstein released albums like "Herzeleid", "Reise, Reise", "Mutter", and "Sehnsucht". Where were they from?

Answer: Germany

Rammstein are an industrial metal group that was formed in 1994 in Berlin, Germany. The lineup of the band has remained unchanged in the first 20 years of their existence. They won a competition and were able to sign with a record label, Motor Music, early in their career.

They released their first album, "Herzeleid", in 1995 and it slowly became popular. Their second album, "Sehnsucht", had the international hit "Du Hast" on it.
