Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who starred on the TV show "Sanford and Son"?

Answer: Redd Foxx

His character, named Fred Sanford, owned a junkyard and ran it with his son's help. The show was actually an Americanized version of a British show called "Steptoe and Son".
2. What kind of investment represents debt in a company?

Answer: Bonds

When you buy stock, you acquire equity, or part ownership of the company, and an option gives you the right to buy or sell a security at a fixed price for a fixed period. If you own a bond, you possess a part of the company's debt, or essentially an IOU.
3. Which of the following people was on the last Apollo mission that went to the moon?

Answer: Harrison Schmitt

Harrison Hagan "Jack" Schmitt walked on the moon during the Apollo 17 mission with Eugene Cernan, and was the first and only scientist astronaut on a trip to the moon. He held a PHD in Geology.
4. According to legend, what salad was invented at the Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood?

Answer: Cobb Salad

The story behind the salad was that it was created in an attempt to use up some leftovers in the refrigerator by Bob Cobb, the owner of the Brown Derby, and went over so well that a customer came back the next night and asked for it again, and the rest is history.
5. A movie starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner as a couple going through an ugly divorce was called "The War of the _____"?

Answer: Roses

This very dark comedy was directed by Danny Devito, who also played a family friend and the movie's narrator. The trio's work in the more traditional comedies "Romancing the Stone" and "Jewel of the Nile" is better known, but I think you can make a valid case that they were better in "The War of the Roses".
6. What athlete won the Women's Heptathlon in both the 1988 and the 1992 Olympics?

Answer: Jackie Joyner-Kersee

Joyner-Kersee won a silver medal in the same event during the 1984 games, and has also won a gold medal and 2 silver medals in the Long Jump. The Heptathlon is a 7 event competition that has been the women's version of the Decathlon on the men's side since 1984. From 1964 to 1980, the women competed in a 5 event pentathlon.
7. Which composer wrote such works as "Appalachian Spring" and "Fanfare for the Common Man"?

Answer: Aaron Copland

Copland's most popular works incorporated American folk music into works that were otherwise clearly 20th century pieces.
8. What movie duo made a series of movies including "Buck Privates" and "Hold that Ghost" during the 40's?

Answer: Abbott and Costello

Bud Abbott and Lou Costello made a whole series of movies, all featuring Bud as the straight man and Lou as the comic foil. Several of their movies also included the Andrews Sisters as a musical act.
9. Which of the following is the name of a book from the Bible?

Answer: Ruth

The book of Ruth tells the story of the grandmother of David, as in David and Goliath.
10. You've answered the questions, so what's the common bond?

Answer: Baseball

The ties are (1) Jimmie Foxx, a power hitter for the A's and Red Sox in the 30's and 40's, (2) depending on your preference, Bobby Bonds or his son Barry, as Bobby was a star primarily in the 70's, and his son a star of the 90's and 00's, (3) Philadelphia 3rd baseman Mike Schmidt, who was a quality player both as a hitter and a fielder, (4) Ty Cobb, considered the best player in the American League in the 1st two decades of the 20th century, (5) Pete Rose, the all time leader in career base hits, (6) Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier while playing 2nd base for Brooklyn, (7) Hank Aaron, the all time home run leader, (8) Abbott and Costello created the most famous baseball comedy routine "Who's on First", and (9) Babe Ruth, who was such a good hitter that he was turned into a full time player even though he won 94 games as a pitcher early in his career in the Major Leagues.
