Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When people go trout or blue-gill fishing, what is the name for the small objects used to lure fish?

Answer: Flies

Beetles are also used to lure bass and flies are used in blue-gill and trout fishing. Flies act as lure to encourage the fish to bite the hook at the end of the line. They are often brightly coloured and are supposed to fool the fish into thinking they are edible river insects.

There are hundreds of different kinds of fishing flies adapted for certain types of weather and the different seasons of the year.
2. In TV's 'The Muppets', Kermit the Frog was always trying to get away from a suitor named Miss___.

Answer: Piggy

English-born Frank Oz was born in Herefordshire in 1944, and provides the voice for Miss Piggy. He emigrated to the US at a very early age and has become well-known as a talented puppeteer. He also provides the voices for other 'Muppet Show' stars Animal, Fozzie and Sam the Eagle.
3. In 'The Simpsons', what is the name of police chief Wiggum's son?

Answer: Ralph

Ralph Wiggum distinguished himself in 'The Simpsons' by having a love affair with Lisa, and eating some worms and paste along the way. Milhous, Martin and Nelson are names of some of the other children at Springfield Elementary.
4. In Stephen King's horror stories, a certain fictional Maine town crops up a great deal. Can you remember what it is called?

Answer: Castle Rock

Amityville was the site of the 'Amityville Horror', a supposed poltergeist haunting. Castle Rock features in 'Cujo', 'The Dark Half', 'It', 'Needful Things' and many other Stephen King books and short stories. Interestingly, LoveRCrowe pointed out to me that the Steven King film 'Stand By Me' is set in a fictional Castle Rock in Oregon, so it's not just in Maine.

There's also a real one in Washington state. Thanks for that info!
5. In 1858, Scottish author R. M. Ballantyne wrote a book named 'The Coral __'.

Answer: Island

R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) wrote 'The Coral Island' as an idyllic children's adventure. It tells the story of Ralph, Jack and Peterkin, three English boys shipwrecked on a South Seas island. They build an ideal life for themselves and have adventures involving pirates and island natives, eventually returning to civilisation as wiser, 'better' people for their experiences.
6. This is a literary term. When an author writes about one thing, but it can be read as symbolically telling us about something else, what is the correct word?

Answer: Allegory

Probably the most famous literary allegory in the English language is George Orwell's 'Animal Farm', which makes a critique of communism by telling the tale of a farm where the animals overthrow the farmer (or 'ruling class'). Some animals - the pigs - become corrupt and more evil than what came before, demonstrating the worst excesses of brutal communist regimes in countries like Russia.
7. Known as the 'birthplace of the Tudor dynasty', what is the full name of this town in Leicestershire, England? Stoke ___?

Answer: Golding

Stoke Golding lies around 15 miles from Leicester itself, and is not far from the border with Warwickshire. In 1485, Henry VII was crowned king of England in the village, this rural coronation being most unusual for a monarch. He was the country's first Tudor king, having just defeated Plantagenet Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field in the Wars of the Roses.
8. In connection with Howard Blake's 'The Snowman' on British television, Aled Jones became very famous in the 1980s. What was his role?

Answer: Choirboy

At the age of nine, Aled Jones became a member of Bangor Cathedral Choir in Wales. He shot to fame as the singer of 'Walking in the Air' (the theme tune to 'The Snowman'), and has since trained at the Royal Academy of Music. Aled now has his own chat show on BBC radio in Wales!
9. This actor starred in 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest'. His surname is Nicholson; what is his first name?

Answer: Jack

Jack Nicholson has starred in dozens of top-grossing films, including 'Chinatown', 'The Shining', 'Batman', 'As Good As It Gets' and 'About Schmidt'. He won a Best Actor Oscar for 'One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest' in 1975, a tale about inmates in a lunatic asylum.
10. So, putting all of these things together, what is the common bond? Think literature...

Answer: The lord of the flies

'Lord of the Flies' is a famous book written in 1954, telling the story of a group of boys who have landed on an island after their plane crashed. 1) The dead boar's head in the novel is called the Lord of the FLIES after the flies which are attracted to it; this gives the book its name. 2) PIGGY is the name of one of the main characters, whose spectacles are used to make fire. 3) RALPH is the name of the responsible boy who tries to keep order on the island. 4) CASTLE ROCK is a geographical feature on the island where Jack builds his camp. 5) The boys are on an ISLAND, and Ballantyne's 'The Coral Island' was in Golding's mind when he wrote his altogether more pessimistic book. 6) The book is an ALLEGORY for the wartime descent into savagery of the whole of human kind. 7) The author's name is William GOLDING. 8) The boys are actually all CHOIRBOYS. 9) JACK Merridew is the name of Ralph's nemesis, who has become a bloodthirsty monster by the end of the book. I hope you got the common bond, as this really is a great novel!
