Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. SPORTS: What Hall of Fame Giant baseball player smashed a line drive which Bobby Richardson caught for the final out of the 1962 World Series?

Answer: Willie McCovey

The situation: game seven, two out, bottom of the ninth inning, Alou on third base, and Mays on second having just doubled. With the Giants' Candlestick Park home crowd roaring, McCovey, the big power hitting first baseman/outfielder, ripped a line drive toward second base that surely would have scored two and won the Giants the series.

Instead, Richardson moved a step left, speared it at his shoe tops and the New York Yankees won their twentieth World Series title. The Giants would have to wait 48 more years until finally winning their first title in San Francisco in 2010. Ott died in 1958 and Mathewson died in 1925. Both were Hall of Fame players for the New York Giants. If you guessed Mays, "the say hey kid", you've got the wrong nickname.
2. TELEVISION: What actor had a three episode role on "All in the Family", a thirteen episode role as Bill Lewis in "Hot l Baltimore", and a thirteen episode role as Glen on "The Nancy Walker Show"?

Answer: James Cromwell

James Cromwell guested as Archie Bunker's friend and co-worker on several "All in the Family" episodes. Archie thought he was the funniest man ever, and dubbed him "the Bob Hope of the loading dock". In one of the later 1975 episodes, he died (unseen) and Archie was called on to deliver a eulogy.
3. RELIGION: In some cultures, what body part is most commonly pierced and deliberately elongated for religious reasons?

Answer: earlobes

Many body parts are pierced in many different cultures, but the earlobes are the area most often changed or adorned by piercings, as the skin is easily perforated and has few nerve endings. Religiously speaking, for example, many Hindu boys and girls undergo the rite of Karnavedha at three to five years old.

This ear piercing ceremony is intended to literally and figuratively open the child's inner ears to receiving sacred sounds. This and other vedic rites are known as Samskaras. Also, statues of the historical Buddha show a seated figure with long earlobes.

This may have been to show he heard everything or else was reminding himself of the heavy jewelry he used to wear before renouncing material things.
4. ENTERTAINMENT: This comic book superhero, published first by Quality Comics and then taken over by DC Comics, can change his shape to any form. Who is it?

Answer: Plastic Man

All the incorrect answers are green, but Plastic Man holds the true blue clue! Writer and artist Jack Cole created Plastic Man, who made his first appearance in "Police Comics #1" (August 1941). Although Plastic Man never achieved the iconic status of Batman or Superman, many other artists were intrigued by his different character and slapstick humor and incorporated him into some of their features.

These artists include Art Spiegelman, Grant Morrison, Alex Ross and Kyle Baker.
5. TELEVISION: Which show opened each episode with doctors and medics transporting injured people away from a helicopter?

Answer: M*A*S*H

As the iconic "M*A*S*H" theme music plays, Alan Alda, as surgeon Hawkeye Pierce, bends toward the incoming helicopter which contains more wounded troops from the front. Not having even had the chance to change into scrubs, he's wearing his Hawaiian shirt and the tell-tale look or concern, knowing he's in for many hours of stitching together torn and devastated young soldiers.
6. CELEBRITIES: When the stars arrive on Oscar night, they mostly arrive by what means and step out onto what?

Answer: limousine/ red carpet

Easy question if you know Hollywood and the "red carpet" treatment afforded the A-list celebrities. Celebrities are known to step out of long limousines before being photographed on the red carpet.
7. HISTORY: What is the name of the medieval torture device which actually increased the size of its victims?

Answer: the rack

The rack was an unsubtle device used to extract information by exerting continuous and increasing pressure on the limbs of the victim by literally pulling him or her apart. I find the whole idea revolting, so research it yourself if you want more info, but for the purpose of this quiz, note what's happening to the victim.
8. ENTERTAINMENT (Wrestling): Camel Clutch, Chinlock, Clawhold and Crossface are examples of what?

Answer: submission holds

These are examples of submission holds, holds used by professional wrestlers to subdue an opponent to the point of surrender, thereby ending the match. Although pro wrestling is called entertainment for a reason, and is scripted by the organizing bodies, submission holds are real and can be dangerous.

They are designed to approach dire consequences such as choking or critical stress to limbs, forcing the victim to "tap out" and have the referee end the match.
9. SPORTS: In Major League Baseball, what event happens immediately after the visiting team is retired in the seventh inning?

Answer: Home team fans stand up, reach skyward, and start moving around.

The mid-seventh inning break is another of those time honored baseball traditions observed by and familiar to most fans but having murky or disputed origins. One possible originator is Harry Wright, founder and manager of the Cincinnati Red Stockings, the first full-time professional baseball team started in 1869.

He observed fans of his team partaking in this ritual rest after sitting on hard wooden benches for most of the game, and commented on it in a letter to a colleague. Wright was born in Sheffield, England and was the son of a professional cricket player.
10. Synonyms for the common bond: prolong, lengthen, draw out, overextend, exaggerate. An alternate definition is a period of time spent in prison. What is the word, unspoken but present, in the first nine answers?

Answer: stretch

"Stretch"is the word. Correct answers relate to "stretch" .

1) Willie McCovey's nickname is "Stretch"; 2) Archie Bunker's friend is "Stretch" Cunningham; 3) Earlobe elongation is stretching; 4) Plastic Man- stretches to change form; 5) "M*A*S*H" wounded are put on a stretcher; 6) Oscar celebrities arrive by stretch limo; 7) The rack stretches the victim; 8) Submission holds in pro wrestling are also known as "stretches"; and 9) the seventh inning stretch is baseball tradition.
