Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What sport has been played since 1541 at Falkland Palace in Scotland, United Kingdom?

Answer: Tennis

The court at Falkland Palace Royal Tennis Club has been claimed to be the oldest real tennis court still in use today. It differs slightly from the 'lawn tennis' variety because it has walls enclosing the court. It is also the oldest real tennis court without a roof. The court itself was built for James V, King of Scotland, and took around two-and-a-half years to build.
2. From what did Oedipus get his name?

Answer: his swollen feet

3. In Britain when legally is time immemorial?

Answer: before the reign of Richard I

4. Who wrote 'In Patagonia'?

Answer: Bruce Chatwin

Bruce Chatwin's book is considered one of the great travel books. He died in 1989. Bill Bryson is famous for his whimsical travel writings. Eric Newby has been in the field for many years perhaps his most famous work is 'A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush'. Tom Cole wrote of experiences as in New Guinea and could be considered one of the original crocodile hunters.
5. What ship did Blackbeard command?

Answer: Queen Anne's Revenge

6. What is sake (saki) made from?

Answer: rice

Sake is a traditional Japanese alcoholic beverage which in my humble opinion tastes horrible. If you can't mix it with cola, I don't want it.
7. Varanasi is a holy city for which religion?

Answer: Hinduism

Varanasi is also known as Benares, and is a holy city for Buddhists as well.
8. Which of these is a bungle in the movie 'Last of the Mohicans'?

Answer: a bus can be seen in the background

In one scene our heroes are seen riding through the countryside. However, they may have been better adviced to use the buses in the background and avoid any unnecessary ambushes.
9. Who did Fidel Castro's revolution topple as leader of Cuba?

Answer: Batista

Allende was the elected president of Chile before being given the chop in a right wing coup. Guevara was of course Castro's right hand man, later to be hunted down in the Bolivian forest. Pais was a fellow revolutionary.
10. What New Zealand horse became a legend in Australia and was killed in California?

Answer: Phar Lap

Phar Lap's legend has reached almost mythical proportions in Australia where it is believed that the horse was poisoned in the states after winning its only race there. Perhaps it was too good!
