Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. U.S. Presidents: Which of these 20th century American Presidents was not a winner of the Nobel Prize for Peace?

Answer: Franklin Roosevelt

Jimmy Carter became the third U.S. President to win the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2002 for his widespread work in the promotion of world peace, including peace missions to North Korea, Haiti and others. Franklin Roosevelt's presidency was more known for its war-making policies than its promotion of peace, the last 4 years having been involved with World War II. Theodore Roosevelt won a Peace Prize for his work in arbitrating the end of the Russo-Japanese war, while Woodrow Wilson won his prize for his work in helping to create the League of Nations and for his 14-Points.
2. Chemistry: Which of these compounds appears to be three benzene rings fused side to side to side?

Answer: Anthracene

Anthracene is an aromatic hydrocarbon which is obtained via the distillation of crude oil and is used in manufacturing dyes. Its chemical formula: C14H10.
3. Cell Biology: What is the junction called at which one nerve cell's axon and another nerve cell's dendrite meet?

Answer: Synapse

Neurotransmitters are transferred from one nerve cell to another via synaptic vesicles found in the synaptic knob at the end of an axon. Adrenaline is one example of a neurotransmitter and acetylcholine is another.
4. Geography: 'Adam's Bridge' is a chain of rocky shoals that crosses which world strait?

Answer: Palk Strait

The Palk Strait separates India from the island of Sri Lanka, with Adam's Bridge (also called Rama's Bridge) spanning the distance. In the ancient Indian epic called the Ramayana the monkey general Hanuman led his forces across these rocks in order to save Rama's wife Sita from the clutches of the evil King Ravanna. Did you get all of that?
5. Literature: In Dante's Purgatory, from his 'Divine Comedy', which type of sinners could be found within the Cornice called 'Superbia'?

Answer: The Proud

This makes sense when one considers that 'superbia' is the Latin word for pride! The Envious could be found in Invidia, the Wrathful in Ira and the Slothful in Acedia. Avaritia is the Cornice for the Covetous, while the Gluttonous reside in Gula and the Lustful lust away in Luxuria. I wonder, to which of these Cornices was Dante assigned?
6. Astronomy: The twelve 'Trojan Planets', a group of large asteroids, orbit the Sun within which planet's orbit?

Answer: Jupiter

Seven of these asteroids orbit ahead of Jupiter while the other 5 trail behind. These asteroids are named for the Greek and Trojan participants in the Trojan War, namely: Achilles, Hector, Nestor, Agamemnon, Odysseus, Ajax, Diomedes, Patroclus, Priamus, Aeneas, Anchises and Troilus. So far as we know, there is no Trojan horse orbiting the Sun...but maybe a wooden rabbit?
7. Odd philosophers: Which famous philosopher kept a very strange pet...a teapot?

Answer: Jeremy Bentham

The 'father of utilitarianism', Bentham was also known for is eccentricism, even insisting that his body be embalmed after his death so he could continue to attend meetings at University College in London. So far as I know, he was never able to play fetch with his teapot...
8. Libraries: Which University's library was founded by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, in the 15th Century?

Answer: Oxford

This library, now called the Bodleian Library after Thomas Bodley who restored and reopened the library in 1602, is certainly one of the greatest university libraries in the world.
9. Art: Which famous painting is lesser known by its original name 'The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq and Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch'?

Answer: The Nightwatch

Rembrandt's 'Nightwatch' (1642), which can be viewed at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, is considered one of the greatest paintings in history. Strangely, it was given the less cumbersome nickname 'The Nightwatch' by mistake. It seems that by the late 18th century the painting was so darkened by dirty varnish that it appeared to be a night scene, provoking the popular title. Thank goodness for that varnish, eh?
10. History: Clovis the Merovingian, who became King of the Franks in 481 AD, was baptized a Christian by St. Remigius in 496 AD in which French city?

Answer: Reims

The legend holds that a Holy Phial of oil was transported by a dove in order that the great King be baptized Christian, therefore securing the safety of the religion in the Germanic west. Thank you for participating...I hope you enjoyed!
